DUKE BLUE DEVILS BASKETBALL OVERVIEW

The 2015-2016 was one of the rare years for Duke where they struggled at different times in the season and had an overall record of 25-11. This was surprising because Duke was coming off winning the National Championship the year before. Led by legendary head coach Mike Krzyzewski, Duke is usually in prime position to go deep into tournament play, but this Duke team only made it to the Sweet Sixteen. With a good amount of the team returning, Duke looks to be use their experience to their advantage and go far into the National Tournament and compete for another National Championship.

Duke is one of the most historic college basketball programs there is. There’s not denying that with looking at the statistics they put up and the number of tournament appearances, final four appearances, and National Championship victories that Duke has racked up over time. Duke Basketball first was established at the university in 1906. And continued to evolve over time into a powerhouse program. One of Duke’s early coaches was Eddie Cameron who really helped propel the Duke program into national prominence. Cameron began coaching the in 1928 and coached the basketball team until 1942 when he began to coach the university’s football team. Cameron had an overall record of 226-99 while coaching the Duke Blue Devils basketball team and also led them to 3 conference championships in 1938, 1941, and 1942. The arena would be named after him, Cameron Indoor Stadium. Duke continued to improve over time after Cameron and made its first Final Four appearance in 1963. The success would go as far as the Final Four and an appearance in the National Championship as Duke couldn’t find the solution to winning it all. All that would eventually change with the best hiring move Duke has ever made when they hired current head coach Mike Krzyzewski.

Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski “Coach K” was hired to be the basketball coach in 1980 after he had previously coached at Army. Krzyzewski had his up and down years in the beginning of his coaching career with Duke but it all came together in 1985 when Duke developed into a powerhouse team. Krzyzewski revolutionized the program and transformed it to a winning machine and has been one of the most successful basketball coaches ever. Duke won its first National Championship under Krzyzewski in the 1990-1991 season. The success hasn’t stopped there as the dominance has continued to this day. Krzyzewski currently has the most tournament wins out of any coach in college basketball history, an overall record of 970-262 with Duke, 5 National Championship wins (1991, 1992, 2001, 2010, and 2015), 13 ACC Championships, 3 time Naismith College Coach of the Year Awards, 5 time ACC Coach of the Year Awards, and 12 Final Four appearances. Krzyzewski has also been the head coach of the USA Olympic Basketball Team since 2006 and has won two gold medals with them in 2008 and 2012. Krzyzewski could go down as the greatest college basketball coach ever and whenever he’s calling the shots, Duke always has a chance to go far into the National Tournament.

With Duke being one of the most historic basketball programs ever, it has seen its fair share of talented players that have gone on to be great in the NBA and are considered some of the best to ever play college basketball. Duke has had 9 National Player of the Year Award winners which were: Dick Groat, Art Heyman, Johnny Dawkins, Danny Ferry, Christian Laettner, Elton Brand, Shane Battier, Jason Williams, and JJ Redick. Other great basketball players that have come through the Duke Program include: Grant Hill, Carlos Boozer, Luol Deng, Kyle Singler, Bobby Hurley, Kyrie Irving, Jahlil Okafor, Jabari Parker, Jay Bilas, Brian Davis, Seth Curry, numerous others. Duke will continue to attract the best young basketball players in the nation because of the rich winning history the program has and because of its legendary head coach.

Duke continues to be one of the top schools for recruiting when it comes to attracting the best high school prospects. This means that Duke will remain an elite program because of its prestigious and successful past. 2015 seemed to be a down year for the Blue Devils, but you can bet that they’ll be back to winning ways in no time. Coach K will continue to lead his teams to winning seasons and most likely more National Championships that will continue to preserve the greatness that the Duke program has already accomplished.
