Ed Sheeran Details

Ed Sheeran Bio

Ed Sheeran is only in his early 20s, but he’s already one of the world’s most popular singer-songwriters and performers. The English singer-songwriter has captured the hearts of fans all around the world with his thoughtful, personal songs and unforgettable melodies. Sheeran’s rise to stardom has been well deserved, but it wasn’t always so easy for him. Despite his early success, Sheeran spent plenty of years putting in the hard work that it takes to reach the top.

Ed Sheeran was born in Hebden Bridge, a small town in England, and grew up primarily in Framlingham, a town on the east coast of England. He found his love of music early thanks to his parents, who played music for him whenever the family traveled around – which was frequently, as his parents ran an art consultancy business that took them all over London, a long drive from Framlingham. The albums his parents played included records from singer-songwriters that Sheeran would later count among his influences. Sheeran developed an appreciation for musicians like Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, and Eric Clapton.

Sheeran loved the music that his parents played for him, but he wasn’t content to just listen to it. He wanted to make music himself, and it didn’t take him long to realize that he had a talent for it. Ed Sheeran started performing at an extremely young age. At four, he was already singing with his church choir. He started playing guitar young, too, and began writing songs when he was still a high school student. He took advantage of Access to Music, a UK music education program, and was accepted at the National Youth Theatre in London as a teen.

Sheeran made his first recordings as a teenager, too. He recorded an EP called The Orange Room in 2005, when he was still in high school. He played shows around the UK and met fellow singers. Music was Sheeran’s whole life.

Sheeran’s passion for music didn’t leave him much time for anything else, and he soon lost interest in education. He dropped out of school when he was 16 years old in order to focus entirely on making music. The year after that, Sheeran moved to London, where he hoped to get noticed in the thriving music scene. Sheeran was performing and recording at this time, and he released two more EPs, You Need Me (2009) and Loose Change (2010). Early on, though, fans that wanted to see Sheeran play couldn’t buy Ed Sheeran tickets – they had to buy tickets for other acts, for whom Sheeran would open. Sheeran toured under the rapper Example in 2010 and played other smaller gigs, but he soon decided that he needed to leave England to make it big.

Sheeran got on a plane to Los Angeles with no real plan for how he was going to get noticed. When he got there, he just played as much as he could, showing up for open mic nights and trying to get other small gigs. As luck would have it, one of the audience members at one of these open mic nights was Hollywood star Jamie Foxx. Foxx was so blown away by Sheeran’s talent that he offered Sheeran the use of his home recording studio and even a bed in his mansion.

Sheeran’s fan base was growing, boosted by high-profile fans like Foxx. Sheeran further increased his following by posting his work on YouTube, and he self-released even more EPs in the next couple of years: Ed Sheeran: Live at the Bedford (2010), Songs I Wrote With Amy (2010), and No. 5 Collaborations Project (2011).

It was the last of these EPs, which featured collaborations with other musicians, that helped Sheeran finally break out. Sheeran hit number 2 on the iTunes chart despite not having any help from a major label. Record companies noticed his success and soon came calling. In 2011, Sheeran signed with Asylum Records.

Sheeran had finally hit the big-time, but he needed a great record to ensure that his time with a major label wasn’t short-lived. Sheeran released his song “The A Team” as his major-label debut, and met with commercial success at last. Sheeran’s first full album, + (pronounced “plus”) came out later in 2011, and it was well received by fans and critics alike. It debuted at number one on the UK charts and performed well elsewhere in the English-speaking world – including the United States, where Sheeran had been a little slower to make a splash.

Sheeran’s career was helped along by the emergence of another British sensation: One Direction, who used a song Sheeran co-wrote on their own 2011 debut album. Pop star Taylor Swift reached out next, and Sheeran collaborated with her on a track to her album Red.

Sheeran’s first year or two in the spotlight included gigs opening for acts like Snow Patrol in the US, but it wasn’t until 2012 that he headlined his own tour. For the first time, fans in the States got their chance to buy Ed Sheeran tickets. They packed smaller venues throughout the country.

Sheeran was still building his fame, but his celebrity fans kept helping him along. Elton John secured him a performance slot at the Grammys by agreeing to play with him (the events organizers had refused to give Sheeran a slot as a solo act). Taylor Swift took him along as an opening act on her The Red Tour, giving him the chance to play larger venues than he ever had before. Sheeran got a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist in 2014, and by the end of the year, he was as famous in the United States and Canada as he was in Europe and Australia. His 2014 single “Sing” was his first number one hit in the United States.

In 2014, Ed Sheeran dropped his second album, x (pronounced “multiply”). The record was a commercial smash, debuting at number one on the UK charts (just as + had) and the US charts (a first for Sheeran). Sheeran followed up the release with a world tour, giving fans as far away as Japan the chance to buy Ed Sheeran tickets. His audience had finally caught up with his vision: the boy for whom music was the whole world now had a whole world of fans.
