The Florida Panthers

The Florida Panthers compete in the Atlantic Division of the National Hockey League’s Eastern Conference and are one of 2 NHL teams (along with the Tampa Bay Lightning) in the state of Florida. The club is owned by Sunrise Sports and Entertainment and based in the Miami metropolitan area, playing their home games at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, FL.

Expansion Team

The Panthers were one of two expansion franchises awarded in December 1992 along with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks. An expansion draft was held to allocate players for the two new clubs as they prepared to begin play for the 1993-94 NHL season. The Panthers had the rights to the first pick and selected the backbone for the early days of the franchise, G John Vanbiesbrouk from the Vancouver Canucks. Other notable players acquired through the draft included RW Tom Fitgerald, LW Stu Grimson, RW Scott Mellanby and C Brian Skrudland. The club was also awarded the number five pick in the 1993 NHL entry draft and put it to good use, selecting C Rob Neidermayer.

Florida Panthers Notable Seasons and Players

Similar to many expansion teams, the Panthers experienced some growing pains for their first two seasons. They quickly turned things around and enjoyed a magical run to the Stanley Cup Finals in the 1995-96 NHL season. The ‘95-96 club remains as the best season in club history to date, here is a breakdown of that magical season and the other three playoff appearances in franchise history:

1995-96. The Panthers would claw their way to a record of 41-31-10 and qualify for the postseason in only their third season. Mellanby and Neidermayer anchored the offense and contributed 32 and 26 regular season goals respectively. D Ed Jovanovski provided an intimidating blue line presence while Vanbiesbrouk was stellar in the net, closing the regular season with a 2.68 GAA. They finished third in their division and entered the playoffs as the number four seed. They dispatched of the Boston Bruins in five games in the opening round before moving on to face the heavily favored Philadelphia Flyers in round two. The Panthers would pull off a shocking upset and eliminate the Flyers in six games. The magic continued in the Eastern Conference finals as they upset the number two seed Pittsburgh Penguins in seven games to reach the finals. The cluck finally struck midnight in the Stanley Cup Finals as the Panthers were swept by the Colorado Avalanche.

1996-97. The Panthers enjoyed another solid season in ’96-97, finishing with a record 35-28-19, again good for third in their division and a number four seed in the playoffs. Mellanby was again a main scoring threat and potted 27 goals during the regular season. He was joined up front by RW Ray Sheppard, who would lead the team in regular season goals with 29. Vanbiesbrouk had yet another amazing season between the pipes, closing out the year with a 2.29 GAA. They would go on to face the number five seed New York Rangers, an absolutely loaded squad that featured Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Mike Richter, Adam Graves and Brian Leetch. The Panthers would secure victory in game one but that would be their only victory of the series as the Rangers won four straight to close out the series.

1999-00. The 1999-00 club would put together a solid 43-27-6 record en route to a second place finish in their division and another playoff appearance. RW Pavel Bure had an electrifying season, scoring 58 goals and assisting on 36 more. Bure was joined on the attack by LW Ray Whitney and RW Mark Parrish, who were good for another 29 and 26 goals respectively. Franchise stalwarts Neidermeyer and Mellanby continued their strong play while Mike Vernon and Trevor Kidd shared goaltending duties. The Panthers would meet the New Jersey Devils in round one, falling in a four game sweep to the eventual Stanley Cup champions.

2011-12. The Panthers and their faithful came alive for the 2011-12 NHL season and returned to the playoffs after a long absence. A record of 38-26-18 was good for first place in the Southeast Division – the club’s first Division title – and a number three seed in the playoffs. New stars Tomas Fleischmann, Kris Versteeg, Stephen Weiss and Brian Campbell combined for a balanced attack while Jose Theodore was solid in goal, posting a 2.46 GAA. They would again face the Devils in the opening round, this time stretching it a full seven games before bowing out.

Florida Panthers Present Day

The 2014-15 Florida Panthers posted a record of 38-29-15, good for 91 points but leaving them on the outside of the playoffs in the competitive Eastern Conference. The club is an interesting mix of young up-and-comers and seasoned veterans and appears to be on the right track for a return to the postseason. The club has drafted well over the past few seasons and the picks are finally starting to bear fruit. 2011 third overall pick LW Jonathan Huberdeau tallied 54 points in the regular season while 2010 nineteenth overall selection C Nick Bjugstad contributed another 43 points. The club is set in goal for years to come as they re-acquired Robert Luongo in 2014 (Luongo played for the Panthers from 2000-06) from the Vancouver Canucks. Luongo posted a stellar 2.35 GAA last year on his way to 28 wins.

Things are looking up for the Panthers going forward and the BB&T Center is coming back to life, the faithful are returning to watch their youngsters grow and gel together. A return to the playoffs could be around the corner if they continue their solid development and the club is able to secure another gem at this years’ draft. Luongo should continue his top-level play between the pipes and the club has shown a knack for signing the right veterans in free agency, making the 2015-16 season a source of hope and optimism for the Panthers and their fans.
