FLORIDA STATE SEMINOLES FOOTBALL OVERVIEW

The Florida State Seminoles are one of the top college football programs in the NCAA that play in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). Led by head coach Jimbo Fisher, the Florida State Seminoles are usually in the conversation for being one of the top teams in the nation. The rich history and tradition as well as the great players and coaches of Florida State make the program one of the best and most attractive teams in all of college football.

The football program at Florida State got its start in 1947 when there were a strong number of applicants to the University after the war was over. The football program became a big deal. The program struggled early and saw four different coaches: Ed Williamson, Don Veller, Tom Nugent, and Perry Moss. Veller and Nugent were fairly successful but both left the university. In 1960, Florida State hired Bill Peterson who would help the program propel itself into the national spotlight. Peterson would coach until 1970 and had a 62-42 record that included a 9-1 season in 1964 capped off with a win in the Gator Bowl before Peterson left the university. After Peterson, Florida State would have two different head coaches from 1971-1975, Larry Jones and Darrell Murda, who both would have losing seasons. The next hire for Florida State would be the best coaching move the university has ever made.

In 1976, Florida State hired legendary head coach Bobby Bowden. Coach Bowden help revolutionize and reinvent the Florida State program and is considered one of the greatest football coaches in the history of college football. Bobby Bowden coached from 1976-2009. Coach Bowden who came from coaching at West Virginia would really start to dominate the college football world in the late 1980’s. From 1987-2000, Bowden and the Seminoles had 14 consecutives years with 10 or more wins and a top 4 finish each year. This run by Bowden and Florida State helped propel Bowden into the conversation for being one of the greatest coaches ever. In his career, Bowden went 304-97 with 2 National Championships (1993 and 1999), 12 ACC Championships, and 21 bowl game wins. Bobby Bowden was elected into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2006. After Bowden retired in 2009, questions swirled around who the next Florida State head coach would be. Current head coach Jimbo Fisher would be hired in 2010 and would be the 9th coach in Florida State’s history. Currently, Fisher has a 68-14 record which includes one National Championship (2013), 3 ACC Championships, and 4 bowl game wins. Fisher looks to continue onto the success he was handed down from Bowden and is growing the Florida State program into one of the most elite in all of college football.

Florida State has featured its fair share of dynamic and elite college football players in the past leading up to today. Florida State has had 3 Heisman Trophy winners: Charlie Ward (1993), Chris Weinke (2000), and Jameis Winston (2013). Two of the Heisman winners were under head coach Bobby Bowden. Other great players to play in a Seminoles uniform are: Deion Sanders, Fred Biletnikoff, Derrick Brooks, Graham Gano, Antonio Cromartie, Walter Jones, Anquan Boldin, Warrick Dunn, and more. Florida State is a popular destination for some of the game’s best players.

Florida State is looking to return to championship for in the 2016 season. In 2015, the Seminoles were 10-3 but were left out of the conversation for the College Football playoffs which they made in 2014. Head coach Jimbo Fisher has the team heading in the right direction and Florida State definitely has the talent to make another run at the National Championship in 2016.
