FutureNayvadius DeMun Wilburn, known professionally as Future, is a hip hop recording artist from Atlanta, Georgia. After handing out a huge number of mixtapes between 2010 and 2011, Future was signed to Epic Records and A1 Recordings, which later supported him in developing his own label, Freebandz. Since signing Future has released three albums and has gained fame as one of hip hop’s best.
Future received his nickname when he began performing with The Dungeon Family, a group he became involved with through his cousin, Rico Wade, who was a record producer. Rico recognized his cousin’s talents and encouraged him to sharpen his writing skills to become a rapper. Before being signed, Future released two demos and collaborated with Gucci Mane on his Free Bricks album.
In September 2011, just days after signing with Epic Records, Future released his mixtape, Streetz Calling to great reviews by Pitchfork and XXL Magazine, describing his sound as a micro-genre of rap. Future released one additional mixtape before his debut album, Pluto, which was released in 2012. The album was a hit and a collaboration with T.I. gave Future his first single to enter the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The album also featured collaborations with Snoop Dogg and R. Kelly among others.
The album was re-released later that year and in January of 2013, Future released a compilation mixtape F.B.G.: The Movie which featured artists from his recently signed Freebandz label. In April of 2014, after facing some delays, Future’s second album was released, featuring collaborations with Kanye West, Rihanna, Ciara, Drake, Diplo, and others. He also joined Drake on his “Would You Like a Tour?” tour.
In 2015, Future released a collaborative mixtape with Drake titled What a Time to Be Alive. The album debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200, Billboard R&B Charts, and Billboard Hot Rap Songs, marking the first time a rapper was able to score two number one albums in a year since Jay Z had done it in 2004.
Earlier this year, Future released his mixtape Purple Reign and just three weeks later premiered his fourth studio album, EVOL. This album helped Future become the fastest artist to chart three number-one albums on the Billboard 200 since 2010. Future has been noted for his unique use of Auto-Tune, demonstrating the artistic side the tool can have. He always puts on a good show, engaging fans with his unique sound. Here at Rukkus, we’re excited to see what the future holds for Future!
