Golden State Warriors Bio

The Golden State Warriors are in the midst of their best season ever. Golden State posted a franchise best 67-15 record this season, which earned them the number one overall seed in the Western Conference and the best record in the entire league. Led by the number one rated defense and the best shooting back-court in the NBA, the Warriors won the loaded Western Conference by an incredible 11 games. The Warriors play in the Oracle Arena, which is located in downtown Oakland, California. The Oracle Arena has contributed to the Warriors success greatly as it employs some of the best fans the NBA has to offer. This season the Warriors dominated at home, posting a league best 39-2 record. The “splash brothers” Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson earned their nickname by being arguably the best shooting duo the NBA has ever seen. Curry, who is also the leading candidate for the most valuable player award this year, shot over 44% from beyond the arc this season, while Thompson shot just a shade under at 43.9%. Hence the name “Splash Brothers”. Curry and Thompson were first and second in three pointers made this year and Curry broke the record for most three pointers made in a single season. A record that he had already previously set. He is truly in a league of his own when it comes to shooting. Curry’s supreme shooting mixed with his elite ball handling and distributing skills, makes him one of the best players in the league despite his small stature. He averaged just under 24 points per game this year, to go along with nearly 8 assists and a career high 2 steals per game. Those averages and the Warriors historically good season are likely to earn Curry his first ever MVP trophy.

The Warriors franchise actually originated in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania back in 1946. They won their first championship before the NBA was actually known as the NBA. The Philadelphia Warriors won the first championship in the league known as the Basketball Association of America. The Warriors won a second championship while located in Philadelphia in 1955. Four years later they drafted one of the first major stars in the NBA, known as Wilt Chamberlain. Chamberlain was one of the first players standing over 7 feet tall in the NBA. Playing against players much smaller than him, Wilt began putting up numbers that you would never see in the game today. If you open up the record books you will see the name Wilt Chamberlain many times. He still holds the record for most points in a game ever with 100 points. That, along with many other of his records will probably never be broken. Along with scoring 100 points in a single game, Wilt is the only player ever to, average more than 40 or 50 points per game during a season, or average over 30 points and 20 rebounds per game during a season, numbers that he actually averaged over the course of his entire career. He was by far the most dominant player of his era, and arguably the most dominant player ever.

In 1962 the Philadelphia Warriors relocated all the way to California, and became the San Francisco Warriors. The end of the Wilt Chamberlain era came in 1964, when the Warriors traded him for multiple players and monetary compensation. Making matters worse, the Warriors lost to Chamberlain and his new team in the NBA finals just two years later. Rick Barry, who the Warriors drafted in 1965 was the star player that led them to the finals that season, but just a few years later Barry quit on the Warriors over frustrations over his salary. After that, the Warriors were back to square one, left without a star player or a competitive team. It was 1971 when the San Francisco Warriors changed their name to the name they claim today. The Golden State Warriors era started in the early 1970’s and it was not long before they claimed the franchises third championship. Rick Barry who rejoined the Warriors team, led them to the championship and was named the finals MVP in the 1974-1975 season. After that third and so far last championship, the Warriors struggled through poor seasons for a while.

Although the Warriors have not won a championship since that 1974 season, they have had some very good teams in between that team and the 2015 team. One of the other most notable Warrior team’s was the team in the early 1990s that featured the three-guard trio of Chris Mullin, Mitch Richmond, and Tim Hardaway. That trio led one of the highest scoring teams in the NBA. They were an exciting team to watch but ultimately that style of play did not lead to much success. That trio was only together for two years and they were only successful in one playoff series. The 2006-2007 Warriors team went on to make their own piece of history. Prior to the 2006 season, the Warriors had not made the playoffs in 12 long years, which was the longest such streak in the NBA. This Golden State team was very fun to watch with their up and down style of play. They had some talent but early on it looked as if they were going to miss the playoffs once again. The team rallied together and finished the season strong. They earned the 8th seed in the western conference and broke their streak of seasons without a playoff appearance, but they had more on their mind. In the first round they were matched up with Dirk Nowitzki and the one seeded Dallas Mavericks. Point-guard Baron Davis had a terrific series and led the Warriors to a game one victory right off the bat. After losing game two, the Warriors went home and shocked the world winning games 3 and 4 in the Oracle Arena behind a crazy crowd. The environment was like none other. The Warriors went on to defeat the Mavericks in 6 games, making them the first 8 seed ever to defeat a number overall 1 seed in a 7 game series. They lost in the second round, but that is a piece of history that no one will ever forget.
