Indianapolis Colts Bio

In 2012 the Indianapolis Colts drafted the future of their franchise with the first overall pick. They selected Andrew Luck out of Stanford University and instantly saw a dramatic increase in victories. The year prior to 2012 the Colts went just 2 and 14 and in Luck’s rookie year they won 11 games and made a playoff appearance. It was a great start to a new era, but Luck has big shoes to fill. Peyton Manning had been the Indianapolis quarterback from 1998 and up until the 2011 season when he had to sit out due to a neck injury. Manning was aging and with a tricky injury in the neck area, the Colts decided to cut bait. But before getting injured, Manning built quite the legacy in a Colts uniform. Like Luck, Peyton Manning was the number one overall pick in the 1998 draft. Unlike Luck, Manning and the Colts did not experience success right off the bat. In his rookie season Peyton struggled mightily, throwing 28 interceptions and leading the Colts to only three wins. In 1999 the Colts drafted a running back to play next to Peyton and that was all he seemed to need. Edgerrin James became Peyton’s tailback and the Colts quickly turned things around, flipping the 3-13 season to a 13-3 season and a division title. They lost in the divisional round, but that year was just the beginning of their success. In 2002 the Colts made a head coaching change, getting rid of Jim Mora for Tony Dungy. They made the playoffs the next three years and had a 12-4 record in two of those seasons. In 2003 they finally made it to the AFC championship game, but they fell short, losing to the great Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. They lost to New England the following season in the playoffs, and it was not until the 2005 season when Peyton finally defeated Brady’s Patriots, this time in the regular season. That 2005 victory over New England was part of a 13-0 start to the regular season. The Colts would finish that season 14-2, but once again could not cash in during the postseason. For Indianapolis the fifth time was the charm. The 2006 season marked their fifth straight playoff appearance. They won their first two playoff games which set up another showdown with New England, but this time it was the Colts who would advance to the super bowl. Peyton and Indianapolis overcame a 21-3 deficit and showed great resolve in their 38-34 victory. They could have easily folded with that kind of deficit against a team that had owned them in the past. Next they would face the Chicago Bears and they won 29-17, earning Peyton’s first and only super bowl. Peyton Manning now plays for the Denver Broncos and despite all the years reaching the postseason, he still only has that one ring. Some people look at that with disappointment, but as a member of the Colts, he led them to the most regular season wins and the highest winning percentage over that span. He is one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever live and many people call him the greatest regular season quarterback ever. That is up for debate but his place in Colts history is not.

Other than that super bowl victory, the Colts franchise only had one other one back in 1970. Although, they did have three other NFL championships, which is what the super bowl used to be called prior to the AFL-NFL merger in 1970. The Colts franchise took home NFL championships in 1958, 1959, and 1968, marking a total of 5 championships in their history. Those first NFL championships came during the Johnny Unitas era. The Unitas era came back when the Colts were known as the Baltimore Colts. The Colts were actually founded in the city of Baltimore back in 1953. It was not until after the 1983 season when they relocated to Indianapolis. In Baltimore, the team was suffering after Johnny Unitas retired. They were lacking success as a team which in turn caused their fanfare to suffer. That is essentially the reason they relocated, hoping to excite fans in a different city. Another part of the reason they moved was because they were under new ownership. Carroll Rosenbloom who was the previous owner of the Baltimore Colts, actually exchanged his franchise for another one. Rosenbloom traded his NFL franchise to owner Robert Irsay to gain the rights of the Los Angeles Rams. Irsay was the Indianapolis owner until 1997 when his unfortunate death occurred. Unitas was the quarterback from 1956 until 1972, so he led them to all three of those NFL championships. He ended up being inducted into the hall of fame and was one of the first great quarterbacks in the NFL. With Andrew Luck in the fold, they have a good chance to make it back to the promised-land. Just three years into his career, Luck has already made three playoff appearances and in 2014 he took the Colts all the way to the AFC championship. During that season he broke Manning’s regular season record for passing yards. The 2015 draft will be big for the Colts future success. They need to land a running back to supplement Luck on the offensive end. They also could use plenty of help on the defensive end, which is where their biggest flaw lies. Many times the Colts offense has to make-up for defensive breakdown. They win a lot of games simply by outscoring their opponent. For instance, in the 2013 first round match-up with the Kansas City Chiefs, Luck and the Colts offense had to put up 45 points to edge out the 45-44 victory. They outscored the Chiefs 31-13 in the second half, marking one of the biggest playoffs comebacks ever. The Colts have a history of great quarterbacks and Luck appears to be the next one in line. If they continue to build the team around him, the 4th super bowl and 6th championship may be on the horizon.
