Justin Timberlake

Justin Timberlake has stolen the hearts of millions since his introduction to the world on Star Search and The All-New Mickey Mouse Club as a child, and later as a lead vocalist in everyone’s favorite boy band, NSYNC. After going solo, Timberlake continued to impress, becoming a respected pop and R&B singer songwriter. Justin Timberlake has accomplished so much at such a young age, and we expect great things in the future as well.

Drawing inspiration from Janet Jackson’s energy and passion for music, Justin Timberlake’s first performance was on Star Search when he was only 11 years old. Being from Memphis, he performed country music. During his time on The Mickey Mouse Club he met Britney Spears (his future girlfriend), Christina Aguilera, and JC Chasez among others. In 1995 Chasez and Timberlake left the show and formed NSYNC, making their first appearances in Europe. After the release of their self-titled album NSYNC became a household name, selling 11 million copies. Their second album, No Strings Attached sold 2.4 million copies and produced hit single “It’s Gonna Be Me”. To the dismay of many NSYNC-obsessed girls, the group broke up in 2002, but not before performing at the Academy Awards, the Olympics, and the Super Bowl in addition to becoming the third-best selling boy band in history.

The demise of NSYNC is accredited to the decline in popularity of boy bands and Timberlake’s rise to stardom after he appeared in Disney’s Model Behavior. Justin focused on his solo career, performing at the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards where he debuted his single “Like I Love You” which peaked at No. 11 on the Billboard hot 100 and No. 2 on UK charts. His debut solo album, Justified debuted No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and sold over seven million copies worldwide. Following this, Timberlake embarked on the Justified/Stripped Tour, headlining with Christina Aguilera.

During the halftime show of Super Bowl XXXVIII in 2004, Timberlake performed with his inspiration, Janet Jackson. As the song drew to a close, Timberlake ripped away a part of Jackson’s clothing attempting to reveal a red lace bra as part of the show but a “wardrobe malfunction” exposed her breast on live television. Due to this, the phrase “wardrobe malfunction” has become mainstream in describing that and similar incidents. Leading up to the Grammy Awards later that year, Justin was forced to apologize during his acceptance speeches after receiving Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. Timberlake was also nominated for Album of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration.

After the incident, Timberlake focused on his acting career. He appeared in a number of movies from 2004 through 2007 and collaborated with a few artists in between. While recording with Snoop Dogg, Justin discovered a throat condition that required surgery. He was advised not to sing or speak loudly and during his recovery he started his own record company, JayTee Records.

JT showed that he was back and better than ever with the release of his second album, FutureSex/LoveSounds which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 charts and becoming the biggest album for pre-orders on iTunes. This album produced one of Timberlake’s most successful singles, “SexyBack”. Later that year, Timberlake appeared on Saturday Night Live as both the musical guest and host. During the show, him and Andy Samberg performed an R&B song for the skit “Dick in a Box”. The song became an immediate hit, it was one of the most viewed YouTube videos of the time, earned an Emmy Award, and Rolling Stone listed it at No. 3 on their “50 Greatest ‘Saturday Night Live’ Sketches of All Time”.

Following the FutureSex/LoveShow tour, Timberlake and Madonna’s song, “4 Minutes” was released in 2008 and topped charts in over 21 countries. During this time, six of his singles went top 10 and he was awarded two Grammy Awards for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance and Best Dance Recording. He also collaborated with a number of artists including, Lil Wayne, Ciara, T.I., and 50 cent among others.

Beginning in 2010 Timberlake began to increase his acting work appearing in The Social Network and starred alongside Cameron Diaz and Mila Kunis in Bad Teacher and Friends with Benefits respectively. His biggest role was as the protagonist of In Time. During this time he also appeared on SNL and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

In 2013 Timberlake announced his return to the music industry and the release of The 20/20 Experience with his single “Suit & Tie”, a collaboration with Jay Z. After four years of not performing in concert, Timberlake performed during the “DirecTV Super Saturday Night”. The album was released in March of that year and broke records for being the fastest-selling on the iTunes store, it debuted at the No. 1 spot, and became the best-selling album of the year in the country.

Following the release, Timberlake embarked on The 20/20 Experience World Tour. The tour became one of Timberlake’s highest-grossing tour and one of the highest grossing tours of the decade. In September, 2013 Timberlake released The 20/20 Experience - 2 of 2 which also debuted at No. 1. This album earned Timberlake seven Grammy nominations, three of which he won- Best R&B Song, Best Rap/Sung Collaboration, and Best Music Video. Timberlake became the male artist with the most number-one songs and top 10 singles of all time. In 2015, Timberlake performed alongside Jimmy Fallon at the Saturday Night Live 40th Anniversary show and appeared on Fallon’s show later that year. He also performed with country star, Chris Stapleton at the Country Music Association Awards.

2016 has already proven to be a great year for Timberlake. He is composing the soundtrack for his wife, Jessica Biel’s film, The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea. It has also been reported that he is working on producing a concert film for the 20/20 Experience World Tour. Timberlake has also shared photos of himself with Timbaland, Pharrell Williams, and Little Big Town in the recording studio, saying that his fifth studio album is only in infancy right now. On May 6th Timberlake released the single “Can’t Stop the Feeling”, which will appear on the soundtrack for DreamWorks Animation’s Trolls movie, in which Justin will play the leading character. We here at Rukkus are hanging on to his every word, waiting for the release of his next album and keeping our fingers crossed for the next Timberlake tour.
