Kansas City Chiefs Overview

As one of the original AFL franchises, the Kansas City Chiefs have a proud and distinct history. From the passion of their fans, to the accomplishments of their players, the Chiefs have become one of the most popular teams in the world despite not playing in a major media market. They have won two league championships – claiming the AFL crown in 1962 and then winning Super Bowl following the 1969 season.

The Chiefs were established as the Dallas Texans in the AFL in 1960. Their founder, Lamar Hunt, was also one of the principal founders of the AFL. Despite winning the AFL Championship Game in 1962 under coach Hank Stram, the Texans stilled played second fiddle in the city of Dallas to the Cowboys of the NFL. Thus, Hunt decided to move the team to Kansas City, Missouri in 1963 and rename it the Kansas City Chiefs.

Under Stram and future Hall of Fame quarterback, Len Dawson, the Kansas City Chiefs closed out the 1960s, and the AFL, in grand fashion. In the AFL’s final season in 1969 the Chiefs defeated the Minnesota Vikings of the NFL 23-7 in Super Bowl IV. This also doubled as the final AFL-NFL Championship Game as the two leagues then merged the following season. To date this is the only Super Bowl the Chiefs franchise has won.

1969 remains the high point in franchise history as the team struggled for much of the following two decades. Over the next 20 seasons the team made the playoffs just twice and had no postseason wins. But 1989 would end up a turning point for the Chiefs as that year they hired Marty Schottenheimer as head coach and drafted outside linebacker Derrick Thomas fourth overall. Those moves would lay the foundation behind the team’s impressive turnaround in the 1990s.

Over Schottenheimer’s decade at the helms, Kansas City made the playoffs seven times and had the second best regular season record during that stretch, only trailing the 49ers. Those teams were star-studded groups including Thomas, Joe Montana, Marcus Allen, Christian Okoye, and a young Tony Gonzalez. Despite all the big names on offense, it was the defense that was the true strength of the team as only one other team allowed fewer points per game during this period, again the 49ers. But unfortunately that success during the regular season did not sustain during the playoffs as the team was never able to break through and reach a Super Bowl.

After Schottenheimer left the team following the 1998 season the team started to shift its focus to being more explosive on the offensive side of the ball. This philosophy shift was magnified by the hiring of Dick Vermeil as coach in 2001. Vermeil, who won a Super Bowl in 1999 as part of the “Greatest Show on Turf” with the St. Louis Rams brought over many of his offensive schemes across I-70 to Kansas City. By this time Gonzalez had emerged as arguably the best tight end in the game and he, along with Trent Green, Priest Holmes, and a Hall-of-Fame offensive line made the Chiefs the most dynamic offense in the league. From 2002 through 2005 the team finished first, first, second, and sixth in points scored and only the Colts scored more points over those four seasons.

However, just as it was in the 1990s, that team was unable to break through in the playoffs and that has been status quo over the past decade. Six different men have been head coaches since Schottenheimer left but none of them have been able to pull off a playoff victory. In fact, it’s been so long since a Chiefs playoff win that the last time it happened (January 16, 1994), the Chiefs’ 2015 first-round pick, Marcus Peters, was just one year old. Fortunately, things seem to be back on the right track as Andy Reid has brought stability to the head coaching position and the organization as a whole. Reid has won 20 games in his first two years on the job and has created a disciplined team in the mold of his successful Philadelphia Eagles teams. Players such as running back Jamaal Charles, defensive tackle Dontari Poe, and linebacker Justin Houston are among the elite at their positions and Chiefs fans are wishing for a speedy recovery of safety Eric Berry as he battles Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

Speaking of those fans, they, along with Arrowhead Stadium, are nearly as synonymous with the franchise as the players themselves. Opponents know that when they visit Arrowhead they are going to have to deal with not only the Chiefs but the loudest fans in the NFL. That statement is not just hyperbole but actual truth as on September 29, 2014 the crowd at Arrowhead set a Guinness World Record for the loudest stadium with 142.2 decibels in a Monday Night Football win over the Patriots.

The Chiefs’ list of historic players is quite a distinguished one and another player will be christened this summer as Will Shields is inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Shields will become the 17th Chief to be inducted as a player, coach, or contributor. The organization also has its own team hall of fame which has 44 members entering the 2015 season, second only to the Packers who have 153 members.

As residents in the AFC West, the natural rivals of the Chiefs are the Chargers, Raiders, and Broncos. But since the Rams relocated from Los Angeles to St. Louis in 1995, the Chiefs and Rams have engaged in a de facto battle for Missouri. The Governor’s Cup is a trophy awarded to the winner when these teams face off which now comes every four years. The Chiefs have claimed all six Governor’s Cup trophies over the St. Louis Rams by winning every regular season game the two teams have played since 1997.

Few franchises can match the proud heritage and history of the Kansas City Chiefs. From their conception in Dallas in the AFL to the ups and downs of their time in the NFL, the Chiefs have been one of the football stalwarts of the Midwest. Their fans are passionate and their future is bright so it is just a matter of time before that translates to long-awaited postseason success.
