Katy Perry Details

Katy Perry Bio

Katy Perry is one of the most successful pop stars of her generation. Her massive hits and larger-than-life live shows have given her a broad appeal and a huge fan base that rushes to buy Katy Perry tickets and albums. But Katy Perry wasn’t always the pop superstar that she is today. In fact, in her initial career as a gospel singer, Katy Perry was hardly noticed at all. From her roots in a deeply Christian family to her incredibly success in the pop music business, it has been a long but satisfying journey to the top for one of the most talented singers and performers on the planet.

Katy Perry was born Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson on October 25, 1984 in Santa Barbara, California. Music ran in Hudson’s family, but not as deeply as religion did: both of Katy Perry’s parents, Mary Christine and Maurice Keith Hudson, were Pentecostal pastors. Their lives revolved around their born-again Christianity, and they made sure that their daughter’s life did, too: young Katy had to call deviled eggs “angeled eggs” and lived by a laundry list of extreme rules. Katy spent much of her young life in church and attended religious camps and schools. She was a long way from her future as a provocative singer and performer.

While the family’s faith limited Katy’s exposure to the world, it didn’t keep her from music. In fact, her parents’ faith encouraged religious worship through song. Katy and her older sister both trained as singers, taking vocal lessons so that they could sing in church. Gospel music played regularly in Katy’s home, and she grew to love music. Katy started taking her singing lessons at age 9 and got her first guitar at age 13.

Katy got her GED early and left high school to pursue a musical career. True to her parents’ vision, though, she was not yet trying for a career in pop music. Instead, Katy first tried out opera and then decided to be a gospel singer, like the ones that she had grown up listening to.

Katy got her first break when she was still training in opera at the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara. Two musicians from Nashville noticed her talent and encouraged her to come to Nashville, Tennessee to record demos. Katy did, and she was soon noticed by representatives from Red Hill Records.

With Red Hill records, Katy Perry recorded her first album. Still going by Katy Hudson, she released a self-titled album of Christian rock and gospel music. Unfortunately, gospel stardom wasn’t in Katy’s future: Katy Hudson was a flop, and sold less than 200 copies.

Katy Hudson didn’t let her failure as a Christian vocalist end her music career. Instead, she switched gears and became a pop musician. She headed back to California and started performing in Los Angeles. She changed her name to Katheryn Perry and later to Katy Perry in order to avoid confusion with the Hollywood star Kate Hudson. For the first time, fans could buy Katy Perry tickets and hear Perry sing secular songs in concert. Writing songs with producer Glen Ballard, Katy Perry started to find the sound that would make her famous.

Perry signed to Ballard’s record company, an imprint of the Island Def Jam Music Group, only to be dropped when the imprint folded. She got another deal with Columbia Records – but that deal fell through, too, when Perry’s record was nearly complete. Perry played minor gigs and provided backup vocals in the mid- to late 2000s, but it was starting to look like she’d never get the break she deserved.

Then Capitol Records came calling. Capitol paired Katy Perry with songwriter and producer Lukasz “Dr. Luke” Gottwald, who helped Perry pen some of her biggest hits. Perry’s pop debut, One of the Boys (2008), contained “I Kissed a Girl,” “Hot n Cold,” “Thinking of You,” and “Waking Up in Vegas” – all huge hits. “I Kissed a Girl” hit the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100, “Waking Up in Vegas” cracked the top 30, and the other two songs were both top-ten hits. One of the Boys went platinum. It had taken seven years, but Perry had followed her gospel flop with a pop super-hit. And with her rise to fame closely connected with the single “I Kissed a Girl” – a song that drew criticism from religious groups – Katy Perry had certainly left her gospel roots far behind.

Following One of the Boys, Katy Perry was everywhere. She went on Warped Tour, hosted the MTV Europe Music Awards, went on a solo tour, and judged American Idol. In 2010, she went back to the studio to record her follow-up record.

2010’s Teenage Dream cemented Katy Perry as a pop superstar. Her second pop effort was even more successful than her first: Teenage Dream debuted at number 1 on the album charts, and its lead single, “California Gurls,” hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Two years later, Perry re-released Teenage Dream in a special edition.

Perry had taken sticky-sweet pop as far as it would go: her next album, Prism (2013), took a more mature turn. Perry showed a more innovative side on the new record, tweaking her style to incorporate the influence of dance music. Fans responded, and the album debuted in the number one spot on the Billboard 200. Copies of Prism flew off the shelves, and Perry was a bigger star than ever. She performed at the Super Bowl XLIX halftime show and toured the world, giving fans new and old alike the chance to get Katy Perry tickets.

Today, Katy Perry is one of the music industry’s most dominant stars. She’s a consistent hitmaker who has shown staying power in an industry that’s known for flash-in-the-pan successes. Perry’s most recent work shows that she can mature as an artist while still maintaining the catchy hooks and beats that have made her so wildly successful as a commercial performer. The smart money says that Katy Perry will continue to dominate pop music for a long time to come.
