Los Angeles Kings Overview

Los Angeles Kings Franchise History

The Los Angeles Kings have been trying to be the kings of hockey since 1967, and surprisingly, the squad has been called the same name and inhabited the same location all this time. The Kings did what most teams don't do and that's sneak into the post-season in year one on the job. It resulted in being ousted by the North Stars, but hey, it was the appearance that counted since this was a fresh young team onto the hockey scene. Another playoff appearance would be provided for LA the following year before the drought set in with four straight seasons without one.

But then the fun set in for the Kings with the franchise going to the playoffs nine straight times, and although five of them were only Preliminary Round battles, this organization had still shown that it could eventually make a run at post-season success. More playoff sports would come for LA throughout the years, but the Kings could never really cement themselves as a true title contender during the initial stretch of seasons.

It wouldn't be until 1993 that the Kings would truly leave a mark on the professional hockey world after the team weaved its way into Stanley Cup Finals action. The Kings obviously didn't care much for the Canadian squads in their way, as LA eliminated Calgary, Vancouver, and Toronto en route to the finals where they would square off with another Canadian organization in Montreal. A fourth straight Canadian triumph would not be had for the Kings though, as the Canadiens won the series in a short five games.

LA slumped after that with four straight inactives in the playoffs, but the real slump wouldn't come until 2003 when the Kings would begin a six-season span with no post-season appearances. However, LA's comeback was a fierce one and the Kings made their triumphant return to playoff action really count. It would be 2012 when the Kings found their way into the Stanley Cup Finals once again, and this time around, they wouldn't let the opportunity go to waste in topping the New Jersey Devils in six games to take home the world championship.

After waiting so long for the franchise's first crown, you would think that it would take a while for the Kings to do it again. Not so fast my friend, as LA rebounded two years late with another Stanley Cup trophy in 2014. There's no doubt that the Kings have ruled the professional hockey landscape in recent years with two world championships to their credit.

Los Angeles Kings Marquee Players

If you're going to mention marquee players that have skated around on the ice for the LA Kings, you're going to have to start at the top. And all Kings fans can tell you that the top is where the legendary Wayne Gretzky sits.

The Great One spent eight years with the Kings franchise, and although LA didn't capture a world title during that stretch, there's no doubting the fact that he was brilliant on the ice for the organization. Although Gretzky sits at fourth in the scoring department for the squad, he was a major player in the team's success during his time on the ice.

The Kings have retired six numbers overall and 16 players have also earned the prestigious honor of making hockey's Hall of Fame, which is a rather high number when you consider the history and success of this franchise as a whole.

In terms of all-time scoring for this incredible hockey club, the Kings still have Marcel Dionne leading the way with a whopping 1,307 points in only 921 games played for the organization. That's certainly an impressive statistics to say the least.

Los Angeles Kings Conference and Stanley Cup Titles

LA just couldn't find Stanley Cup success until the year 2012 rolled around, which became the first of their two championship trophies in a span of only three seasons.

The Kings have been able to score three conference championships throughout their history, and surprisingly, they have even less divisional titles with only a single divisional crown coming in 1991. And they didn't even win a conference or Stanley Cup trophy during that memorable season on the ice.

Los Angeles Kings Venue Information

For the hockey Kings, it all started at The Forum in Inglewood before the Staples Center became the place to be for LA hockey fans in 1999.

The Staples Center doesn't exactly need a thrilling introduction, since most fans know that the arena is home to the Lakers and Clippers of the NBA and also hosts an enormous amount of cool events as well.

Over 18,000 Kings fans can fill the Staples Center for a home game, which turns Hollywood into a hockey town when LA is trying its best to find a path to yet another Stanley Cup trophy. The venue obviously features a lot of cool Hollywood-like features and is the kind of arena that just feels like a big deal given its location.

Los Angeles Kings 2014-2015 Season Recap

The hardest thing for a professional hockey team to do is win back-to-back world championships. Winning one is hard enough due to the challenges that present themselves along the journey, so when the Kings took home the NHL's top honor in 2014, their fans knew it would be difficult to repeat that same process only a year later.

Clearly it was more difficult than originally expected, as the Kings brought home 95 points and managed a fourth place Pacific Division finish, which unfortunately did not result in the team even being able to defend their crown in the playoffs.

To go from the pinnacle of hockey to not even making the post-season had to be hard for this Kings franchise, but if history is any indicator for LA, the franchise will be back in the Stanley Cup title picture soon enough. The Kings have won titles in 2012 and 2014, so perhaps that return to the hockey throne could be as early as next season.
