LOUISVILLE CARDINALS BASKETBALL OVERVIEW

Although the Louisville Cardinals had a lot of success in the 2015 season and finished with the #14 ranking in the nation, the Cardinals were left out of the National Tournament due to self imposed sanctions that made themselves ineligible to compete in postseason play. This sanction doesn’t diminish the talent that the Louisville team had and still has under head coach Rick Pitino. The Louisville Cardinals are one of the nation’s top programs and should be in position to compete for a Final Four spot in 2016.

Louisville had seen the bulk of its success starting in the 1940’s under head coach Bernard Hickman. Before Hickman, Louisville only had 11 winning seasons out of the school’s 33 seasons when the school began the basketball program in 1911. Hickman began in 1944 and had instant success going 16-4 in his first season. Hickman never had a losing season in his tenure which lasted until 1967. Hickman led Louisville to a 443-183 record with appearances in various tournaments like the NCAA Tournament, NIT Tournament, and KIAC Tournament. When Louisville joined the Missouri Valley Conference, they won the championship in 1967 which was Hickman’s last season as head coach. Assistant coach John Dromo would take over after the retirement of Hickman and he would coach from 1967-1971. Dromo went 68-23 before retiring during the 1970-1971 season due to a heart attack, assistant Howard Stacey would take over the remainder of the season. In 1971, Louisville hired a UCLA assistant coach to be their next head coach, Denny Crum. Coach Crum would come in to Louisville and have immediate success with the program. Crum coached from 1971-2001 and would rack up a 675-295 record and only have 3 losing seasons in 30 seasons. Crum led the Cardinals to their first two National Championships in 1980 and 1986 and also 6 Final Four Appearances, 15 Conference Championships (MVC and Metro Conference), and was a 3 time National Coach of the Year while coaching 1 National Player of the Year and numerous All Americans. Crum retired in 2001 and remains a legend at Louisville.

In 2001, Louisville hired their current head coach Rick Pitino. Coach Pitino had a stint coaching at the University of Kentucky and also with NBA teams that included the New York Knicks and Boston Celtics. Pitino had a mediocre year his first season with Louisville and went 19-13. He quickly picked things up after his first year and hasn’t looked back since. Pitino currently has a 391-132 record with Louisville which will continue to improve as he coaches the Cardinals. Pitino has led the Louisville program to another National Championship in 2013 and 3 Final Four appearances, 5 Conference Championships, and never had a losing season. Pitino has the Cardinals in a great position and could be a contender for a National Championship every year.

Although the self impose sanctions left Louisville out of the tournament in 2015, Pitino and the Cardinals will definitely be prepared in the new 2016 season to make a move toward the national title. The Louisville Cardinals could be the team to watch out for in 2016 since they were left out of the picture in 2015.
