Marc Anthony Details

Marc Anthony Bio

Marc Anthony is the most successful salsa artist of all time – but he’s much more than that. Anthony is also a legend in the worlds of Latin and mainstream pop. His albums have sold more than 12 million copies worldwide, and fans all over the world rush to get Marc Anthony tickets to his live performances. But while Marc Anthony is on top of the world now, it wasn’t always this way. In fact, Anthony’s rise to fame started with very humble roots in New York City’s Spanish Harlem.

Marc Anthony was born Marco Antonio Muñiz on September 16, 1968. His parents were both immigrants from Yauco, Puerto Rico, and the family didn’t have much. But Anthony’s parents did have one thing to give their young son: a passion for music. Marc Anthony’s father, Felipe Muñiz, worked in a hospital lunchroom, but when he wasn’t on the job he was making music. Felipe passed on his love of music to his son from an early age. Even Marc Anthony’s birth name, Marco Antonio Muñiz, is musical: he’s named after the Mexican singer of the same name, an artist beloved in his parents’ native Puerto Rico.

It didn’t take long for Anthony to follow in his father’s footsteps. When he was still a teenager, he began singing in New York’s underground house and freestyle music scenes. He began calling himself Marc Anthony in order to avoid confusion with his popular namesake. Anthony had a talent for songwriting, and his songs found their way onto records from more established Latin pop and freestyle acts like Menudo. By 1988, Anthony had his first record: Rebel, a freestyle album that featured the genre’s trademark electronic and dance music influences. Marc Anthony continued to work in the freestyle music world early on, even taking the stage as an opening act as Madison Square Garden in 1992. The first fans to buy Marc Anthony tickets were treated to a very different style of music, one full of more modern dance influences. But by 1992, Marc Anthony knew that he wasn’t getting the attention he deserved as a freestyle singer. He eventually agreed to an offer from RMM Records to make a salsa record. It was a decision that would change Anthony’s life.

Marc Anthony found his passion for salsa music when he heard Juan Gabriel's hit "Hasta Que Te Conocí” in a taxi. He realized the Latin pop song would sound great as a salsa track, which inspired him to accept RMM’s offer. The song was one of several covers on Anthony’s first salsa album and first full-length record as a solo artist, Otra Nota (1993). Otra Nota was well received by critics and fans, and "Hasta Que Te Conocí” peaked at number 13 on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart.

Anthony’s rise continued with Todo a Su Tiempo (1995), which featured eight singles that all hit the top of the Billboard Tropical Songs chart. Contra la Corriente (1997) followed, and it became the first salsa album to ever top the Top Latin Albums chart and to break into the Billboard 200. Anthony was showing his crossover potential in a genre that wasn’t known for mainstream appeal. Three albums into his salsa career, Marc Anthony was already the genre’s best-selling artist of all time. All over the world, fans rushed to buy Marc Anthony tickets; all over the world, Marc Anthony sold out huge arenas and respected venues.

Having conquered the Spanish-language market, Anthony next moved to make English-language music – something he hadn’t done since making the change to salsa music years earlier. Anthony cut ties with RMM Records and moved to Columbia Records, which released Anthony’s first English-language album. The self-titled Marc Anthony was a critical and commercial success: it reached number eight on the Billboard 200 albums chart and went platinum three times over in the United States. It was also a big hit in Canada, Europe, and beyond.

Anthony had established himself as a crossover superstar, but he didn’t let his salsa career languish. He returned to the genre with 2001’s Libre, and would continue to make both Spanish- and English-language records for the next few years. His 2002 English-language album Mended was followed by a Latin Pop album, 2004’s Amar Sin Mentiras, and a salsa album, Valió la Pena (which featured all of the same songs as Amar Sin Mentiras, but in a salsa style). Marc Anthony’s early and mid-2000s work also included several collaborations with Jennifer Lopez, whom he married in 2004. The couple later divorced in 2014.

Anthony’s acting career also expanded in the 2000s. Anthony starred opposite Denzel Washington in 2004’s Man on Fire, and he played salsa legend Héctor Lavoe in 2007’s El Cantante. Previously, Anthony had appeared on Broadway in Paul Simon’s 1998 musical The Capeman and in films like 1995’s Hackers.

After releasing a soundtrack to El Cantante in 2007, Anthony returned to Latin pop with Iconos (2010). But it wouldn’t be until 2013’s 3.0 that he returned to the salsa genre that made him famous. Anthony had kept salsa fans waiting since 2004’s Valió la Pena, but he returned in style: 3.0 won a Latin Grammy for Best Salsa Album.

Today, Anthony is one of the most iconic and best-selling pop artists in the world. He’s the best-selling salsa singer of all time, but his career hasn’t been limited to that genre: Anthony is also known for his English-language music, his Latin pop efforts, and more. He’s even made his impact in other art forms, having earned critical and commercial acclaim on stage and in Hollywood. But for Marc Anthony, the music still comes first: the singer continues to record and perform concerts all around the world, where fans still rush to get their hands on Marc Anthony tickets. Anthony’s legacy is felt all around the industry: he revived salsa music, fueled the trend of Spanish-language artists crossing over into English-language success, and helped show a stagnant industry how one man could transcend several genres.
