Marilyn Manson Details
Marilyn Manson BioMarilyn Manson’s music demands attention – both good and bad. To his detractors, Manson is the embodiment of everything that’s wrong with our society: his persona and his music have both rankled with the establishment since his rise to fame in the 1990s. But to Marilyn Manson’s many fans, his appeal goes much deeper than mere shock value. Manson’s music and legendary live shows are a running commentary on the society that so fears him, and his innovative music is as important today as it was when he first emerged.
Marilyn Manson was born Brian Hugh Warner on January 5, 1969 in Canton, Ohio. Not much about his early life suggested that he would one day become such an iconic and polarizing musical figure: Warner grew up in Canton and attended a Christian school in town.
But that school – Heritage Christian School – would plant the seeds of Manson’s rebellious musical career. In school, the young Brian Hugh Warner was told that there was certain music he should not listen to. Good Christians turned away from bad music: music like heavy metal, which often included imagery of death and devils. The moment he heard this, the boy that would become Marilyn Manson started to listen to precisely the kind of music he wasn’t supposed to. The forbidden appealed to him, and he began listening to the bands that would shape his own sound years later.
Later in his youth, Manson’s parents moved the family to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. There, Manson attended community college and became a journalist. He began interviewing musicians for the magazine 25th Parallel. He got the chance to meet some of the bands and singers who would later be his peers, including Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor, who would later play a key role in Manson’s own career.
It didn’t take long for Marilyn Manson to make his own forays into the music world. Along with guitarist Scott Putesky, Manson formed a band called Marilyn Manson & the Spooky Kids. The name was later shortened to just Marilyn Manson, meaning that both the band and its frontman were named Marilyn Manson. The unique and disturbing name combines the names of one of Hollywood’s most famous stars (Marilyn Monroe) and Hollywood’s most famous murderer (Charles Manson).
Marilyn Manson’s unique brand of metal and shock rock caught one, and soon drew the attention of one of the genre’s most respected figures: Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails. Reznor was instrumental in the group’s rise: he produced their first full-length album and released it on his record label.
That album, Portrait of an American Family (1994), shocked the rock world. It was certified gold in the US and drew the band plenty of negative attention from shocked conservatives – attention that only caused more of the group’s new fans to rush out and buy Marilyn Manson tickets for the band’s first headlining tour.
But the stir caused by Portrait of an American Family was relatively small compared to the impact of the band’s best-known album, Antichrist Superstar (1996). Antichrist Superstar was a critical and commercial hit, drawing higher praise than the group’s debut and becoming the band’s first platinum album. Antichrist Superstar achieved remarkable crossover success, bringing the group’s edgy sound to a more mainstream audience. As the grunge genre faded in the late 90s, Marilyn Manson’s brand of industrial metal seemed to be taking over.
After the success of their second album, Marilyn Manson went touring. The Dead to the World tour was the group’s biggest yet, and it gave fans all over the country their first chance to get Marilyn Manson tickets. Marilyn Manson was bigger than ever – but far from done.
Antichrist Superstar was just the first part of a three-part concept album project, and the band quickly headed back to the studio to finish the rest of it. Mechanical Animals (1998) marked a change in the band’s sound, as they experimented with 1970s glam rock influences. The new direction didn’t hurt the band’s sales: like its predecessor, Mechanical Animals went platinum.
In 1999, tragedy rocked the nation: two students at Columbine High School in Colorado killed 13 of their classmates in a senseless act of violence. Early media reports suggested that violent music and video games and music had led to the massacre. Angry critics focused on Manson’s music in particular, and the band cancelled the remainder of their 1999 tour out of respect for the victims. The group avoided the Denver area for the next couple of years: Denver-area fans wouldn’t be able to get Marilyn Manson tickets again until Ozzfest in 2001.
The trilogy of albums wrapped up in 2000 with Holy Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death). The album was in some ways the band’s most complex work yet. It was a concept album that showed the group returning to its industrial metal roots while lashing out at critics who connected their work to the Columbine massacre the year before.
With the trilogy behind them, the band released The Golden Age of Grotesque (2003) and a greatest hits album before Reznor’s label was reabsorbed into its parent company, Interscope Records. Now with Interscope, the band began work on their sixth album.
Eat Me, Drink Me (2007) was a more introspective record. Having reached their commercial peak and outlasted most of their most vocal critics, the band was now freer and more able to make uniquely personal music. Eat Me, Drink Me was recorded in a rented home studio, and the band’s next album, The High End of Low (2009) was recorded in Marilyn Manson’s home.
The High End of Low would be Manson’s last album with Interscope. In the band’s continuing quest for creative freedom, Marilyn Manson founded his own label, called Hell, etc., and released 2012’s Born Villain on it. The Pale Emperor (2015) followed, also on Hell, etc.
The Pale Emperor marked further evolutions in Manson’s style – the record backs off of the industrial metal sound in favor of a more blues-influenced style. It’s the latest in a series of evolutions that have defined the band. While the band’s many critics prefer to think of it as pure metal outfit, the reality is more complex: Marilyn Manson’s musical style incorporates a wide range of musical influences.
Today, the group is freer than ever to explore all of those influences. The band that critics tried to quiet in the late 1990s is still here, and making more fascinating music than ever. Fans still rush to buy Marilyn Manson tickets and albums, because with Marilyn Manson, you never know what will come next.
