What makes FedExForum special?

FedExForum is located in downtown Memphis, which led to the design of the interior of the arena to represent the musical heritage that the city has. FedExForum was the first arena in the NBA to implement see-through shot clocks in order for better sightlines for spectators behind the backboard.

Who are some marquee players that have been a part of the Memphis Grizzlies team in the past?

The Memphis Grizzlies have a very short history in the NBA relative to other franchises around the league. Before the franchise moved to Memphis, the Grizzlies were located in Vancouver for the first six years of their existence. Due to their short existence, the Grizzlies have seen many great players play for them in the NBA, but none that are currently in the Hall-of-Fame due to lack of time after retiring from the league. Some of the notable players that have suited up for the Grizzlies include Pau Gasol, Marc Gasol, Mike Miller, Mike Conley, Zach Randolph, O.J. Mayo, and Rudy Gay among others.

How have the Memphis Grizzlies performed historically?

Again, due to the Grizzlies short tenure in the league they have never won an NBA Championship, nor a Conference Title, nor a Division Title. Memphis Grizzlies teams of this decade have been very competitive in the Western Conference, but have not yet been able to make it all the way to the NBA Finals.

Memphis Grizzlies Franchise History

The Memphis Grizzlies are a member of the Southwest Division in the NBA's Western Conference. The team was founded in 1995 and started their NBA journey as the Vancouver Grizzlies after the NBA chose to delve into the Canadian market by introducing the Grizzlies and Toronto Raptors.

Former Oklahoma State center Bryant “Big Country” Reeves was selected as the first draft pick in team history at the No. 6 spot in the 1995 NBA draft. Vancouver would also add former University of California standout Shareef-Abdur Rahim with the third overall pick in the 1996 NBA draft.

But despite compiling a nice roster of former college successes, the Grizzlies would fail to deliver much success while in Vancouver, finishing last in the Midwest Division every single year except for the 1997-1998 season that saw them finish sixth. In fact, the franchise only managed to reach 20 wins in a season twice, with those coming in the two years prior to their exit from Vancouver.

After multiple relocation options for the team were discussed, eventually it was the Memphis that was awarded the team in 2001. The Pyramid Arena in downtown Memphis would serve as the home for the team from 2001-2004, and after continuing their struggles from the Vancouver days in the first couple of seasons, the Grizzlies would turn things around with a 50-win season during the 2003-2004 campaign.

2004 would also mark the Grizzlies' move from the Pyramid Arena to the brand new FedEx Forum, with the team playing its home games there ever since.

Memphis followed up its 50-win triumph with back-to-back playoff appearances in 2005 and 2006, however, they failed to make it out of the Western Conference first round. It wasn't until four years later that the Grizzlies would find themselves advancing to the second round, and then the team topped that with a Western Conference finals appearance in 2013.

The Grizzlies have remained as one of the most consistent teams in the entire NBA over the past five years, securing a winning record every single season and only missing the playoffs once during that span.

Memphis Grizzlies Marquee Players

Despite being a team rooted in one of the NBA's smaller market, the Grizzlies have seen plenty of incredible talents come and go throughout the years.

The likes of Pau Gasol, Shane Battier, Mike Bibby, Mike Miller, and Rudy Gay have all called Memphis home at one point during their NBA careers. Gasol has gone on to win two NBA championships with the Los Angeles Lakers, and Battier and Miller also captured two of their own during their stint with the Miami Heat.

The current foundation of Mike Conley, Zach Randolph, and Marc Gasol are doing a great job of following in their footsteps, as Memphis has molded itself into a perennial power in the Western Conference.

The Grizzlies have also seen several decorated coaches in charge over the years, as NBA Hall of Fame coach Hubie Brown led Memphis from 2002-2005, and former Atlanta Hawks and Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Mike Fratello controlled the team from 2004-2006.

Memphis Grizzlies Conference and NBA Titles

Although the Grizzlies have been a member of the NBA for 20 years now, they have yet to secure a conference or NBA championship.

The closest they came was the aforementioned Western Conference finals appearance in 2013, which saw the team get swept by the San Antonio Spurs.

Memphis Grizzlies Venue Information

The Grizzlies continue to play their home games at the FedEx Forum in downtown Memphis near the Beale Street Historic District. The venue also serves as the home arena for the Memphis Tigers men's basketball team, with both teams occupying the arena since its opening in September 2004.

However, the construction process of the venue was less than smooth, as in 2003, a major wind storm came rolling through the Memphis area and almost destroyed that cranes that were being used to construct the building. But despite the initial struggles, the Fedex Forum was officially opened for business.

As for the interior of the arena, it is about what you'd expect it to be given its location. Given the city's well-documented musical history, there are plenty of visual displays within FedEx Forum that showcase various artists that have called Memphis home throughout their career, making it a must-visit attraction for music lovers.

The arena was also the first in the NBA to adopt the concept of see-through shot clocks, which gives those who are located in seats behind the basket a much better viewing experience.

Memphis Grizzlies 2014-2015 Season Recap

After back-to-back winning seasons heading into the new campaign, there were high expectations for the Grizzlies entering the 2014-2015 season, and the team certainly lived up to the hype.

Memphis added another 50-win season to its resume (the fourth in team history) by compiling a 55-27 record overall, coming up just one win short of the team's record win total of 56 in a single season. The Grizzlies finished second in the Southwest Division behind the Houston Rockets and locked up the fifth-seed in the highly talented Western Conference.

As expected given the roster, the Grizzlies achieved total balance throughout the season with five players accumulating a double-digit scoring average. Center Marc Gasol led the way in the scoring department, while fellow frontcourt member Zach Randolph led the team in rebounding.

Memphis Grizzlies Playoff Outlook

Although the Grizzlies are seeded fifth in the Western Conference, the team has a highly favorable first round matchup with the Portland Trail Blazers. Unfortunately for Portland, it finds itself nursing a lot of injuries heading into the post-season, while Memphis has gotten healthy at the right time.

Of course, should the Grizzlies advance to the second round of the playoffs, they would likely square off with the Golden State Warriors, who compiled the league's best record this season and will be quite the challenge for a Memphis team that is looking to finally make a run at a Western Conference title.
