Miami Dolphins Overview

Miami Dolphins Franchise History

The Miami Dolphins swam into the hearts of football fans everywhere all the way back in 1966 when the franchise first launched. Few expected these fresh new Dolphins to make an impact early, and Miami didn't exceed those expectations by struggling to a dreadful 3-11 record in its first campaign on the gridiron. But after the initial Miami struggles got out of the way, the Dolphins managed to turn matters around in quite a hurry.

The year 1970 saw these Dolphins make a rush towards the post-season, and although Miami went bouncing out at the hands of the Oakland Raiders, there's no doubt that the squad had taken a massive leap towards success. No further evidence of that was needed after the Dolphins were Super Bowl bound the following year, with the franchise getting steamrolled by the by the boys from the Big D in the NFL's biggest game. How would these angry Dolphins respond? By completing the most impressive season in the history of America's favorite sport.

Yes, the Dolphins decided that mediocrity was not acceptable and chose to take the football world by storm with a ridiculously awesome undefeated season. But while Miami's perfect campaign was great and all, Dolphins fans no doubt wanted a whole lot more than that. Could these flawless Dolphins turn regular season success into championship glory? They could and did with a Super Bowl triumph over the Washington Redskins, earning the Dolphins the most spectacular season in league history.

How does a talented squad follow a perfect season? Obviously remaining undefeated was going to be tough for the Dolphins, but although the organization saw its streak end with two regular season disappointments, Miami still ran the gauntlet to make the Super Bowl. The monumental game went according to plan, and the Dolphins once again hoisted the most prestigious trophy in the world of football.

The Dolphins would take a bit of a step back for the remainder of the 70s, but when you've been perfect and brought home a lot of hardware, that's acceptable. This Miami franchise would make its glorious return to the NFL's Super Bowl spectacle in 1982, however, it was the Redskins who earned the honor of being called champions when all was said and done. A 1984 Super Bowl game appearance would earn Miami another losing result thanks to the overly talented squad from San Francisco.

Unfortunately for Dolphins supporters, things haven't been the same since and the club has failed to find Super Bowl glory once again. And in fact, Miami has only seen the playoffs once since 2002.

Miami Dolphins Marquee Players

Three numbers find themselves retired by the Dolphins franchise, with Bob Griese, Dan Marino, and the legendary Larry Csonka making up that prestigious group of athletes.

The throwing contributions of Griese and Marino were obviously Hall of Fame material as both have cemented themselves as two of the best quarterbacks to ever line up under center on the gridiron. While Marino has been knocked a ridiculous amount of times for his inability to win a title, the man is still a throwing machine and overall legend.

As for the gritty Csonka, he was a running back like no other and plowed over the defensive competition on a regular basis. The high-powered runner also found himself with a nice little award of being named the Super Bowl MVP during Miami's last triumph.

Miami Dolphins Conference and Super Bowl Titles

Apparently these Dolphins decided to get all of their Super Bowl trophies at once since they brought them home in back-to-back campaigns in the early 70s. There's no doubt that rowdy Miami fans are impatiently waiting for that next one.

As for conference titles, the Dolphins have themselves five of those and unfortunately they haven't seen one since the mid-80s were taking place.

But hey, at least Miami has an unlucky 13 divisional crowns to its credit, as that's certainly nothing to scoff at if you're a Dolphins fan.

Miami Dolphins Venue Information

It appears that the Dolphins franchise is seeking a world record for number of stadium name changes in a team's history. These days the Dolphins do their business in Sun Life Stadium, which has been labeled such things as Joe Robbie Stadium, Pro Player Stadium, and obviously, Dolphins Stadium. The organization even dropped the “s” for three years to make it Dolphin Stadium.

So obviously, this venue has been doing some work for the Dolphins for quite a while now. Super Bowls have come and gone through the stadium, with the Dolphins being the only professional inhabitant that it has to offer. Other large events related to soccer and professional wrestling have also temporarily called Sun Life home.

Over 65,000 championship-seeking Dolphins supporters can crowd the stadium for a Sunday brouhaha with the team of choice for the week, and it definitely provides a unique Miami atmosphere that the franchise hopes can give its team quite the boost on gameday.

Miami Dolphins 2014 Season Recap

For a squad that has only sniffed the post-season once since 2002, Dolphins fans were certainly optimistic about what the 2014 campaign could offer. However, it was more of the same for Miami fans who are still thirsty for a piece of Super Bowl success.

Only an 8-8 record would come to fruition for a Dolphins team that had been hoping for so much more on the gridiron. Even the rival Buffalo Bills finished above Miami in the division, giving this Dolphins team a third place AFC East finish for the fifth time in six campaigns.

It wasn't that the Dolphins were necessarily awful, it's just that Miami was kind of there. No one could take the Dolphins as a legitimate title threat after so much inconsistency, but perhaps that will get better for a team looking to find itself on the upswing sooner rather than later.

The Dolphins – and just as importantly their fans – are hoping that a solid draft will help Miami make a big splash into the football waters next season.
