MICHIGAN STATE SPARTANS BASKETBALL OVERVIEW

Michigan State has been one of the top basketball programs over the past decade or so and looks to be getting better and better each season. Head coach Tom Izzo leads the Spartans who are usually in the conversation for the top team in the Big 10 and one of the top in the nation. Last season, Michigan State was shocked in the first round of the national tournament in 2015 when they were knocked out by Middle Tennessee. The Spartans will definitely come into the new 2016 season ready to prove that last year was a fluke and that they are one of the best college basketball programs in the nation.

The Michigan State Spartans had their start in 1898 and saw their first head coach Charles O. Bemies in 1899. Bemies only coached until 1901 going 5-2. George E. Denman was hired in 1901 and only coached until 1903 but is Michigan State’s only undefeated coaching going 11-0. The Spartans basketball program struggled and saw a number of coaches until they started to find a good amount of success in the 1950’s where they began to have a regular presence in the national tournament. Their first Conference Championship and National Tournament appearance was in 1957 under head coach Forrest Anderson. Looking forward beyond 1957, the Michigan State Spartans began to find success but still couldn’t find a coach that could consistently win despite appearances in the national tournament and winning the conference championship a few times.

In 1976, George “Jud” Heathcote was hired as the Michigan State head coach and really helped propel the team into what it is today. Heathcote had a lot of success coaching at Michigan State which included the school’s first National Championship in 1979. Heathcote was one of the first coaches with Michigan State to have a long tenure coaching the team as he finished coaching in 1995. Under Heathcote, Michigan State went 339-221 with 3 Big Ten Championships, 2 Big Ten Coach of the Year awards, and 13 winning seasons before retiring. The next head coach is still the current head coach of Michigan State, Tom Izzo. Coach Izzo was an assistant to Heathcote. Coach Izzo continued the success of Heathcote and has even advanced past him for how much he’s improve the Michigan State program. Izzo currently is 524-205 with Michigan State and led them to their second National Championship in 2000. Izzo also has led the Spartans to 7 Final Four appearances, 7 Big Ten titles, 16 winning seasons, and has had an appearance in the national tournament each season as head coach. Izzo has also been awarded Big Ten Coach of the Year three times and was AP Coach of the Year in 1998. Coach Izzo and the Spartans are in position to remain one of the top teams in the nation and are in the running for the National Championship.

Although the rise of the Michigan State program was slow, the Spartans have seen a number of great players come through their program. Michigan State has had 3 National Players of the Year in their history with Shawn Respert (1995), Draymond Green (2012), and Denzel Valentine (2016). Other great players that have come through the Michigan State Spartans program include: Earvin “Magic” Johnson, Zach Randolph, Travis Trice, Jay Vincent, Terry Furlow, Paul Davis, Shannon Brown, and many more. As Michigan State improves each season, the program will attract more and more players that could go down as some of the best to ever play at the school.

The end of the 2015 season in the tournament was a huge shock to Michigan State that they won’t soon forget. But, not forgetting may not be a bad thing because the Spartans will use their early first round exit as motivation heading into the new 2016 season. The Michigan State Spartans out on a mission is a scary thing for the college basketball world. Tom Izzo will have his team hungry and ready to come out of the gates with intensity and have their eyes on that national title.
