Miguel BioThe Los Angeles-based singer Miguel rose to fame on the strength of his unique pop music, which blends elements of funk, R&B, soul, and traditional pop. Miguel’s talents and his one-of-a-kind musical style have helped him win fans all over the world. Today, Miguel tickets and Miguel albums are among the music industry’s hottest sellers.
But Miguel wasn’t born into superstardom. He rose in the world of pop on the strength of his talent, vision, and work ethic. His story goes back to his teenage years, when he was first experimenting with music and performing – and perhaps even further, to his childhood in Los Angeles and the music he was exposed to from an early age. The story of Miguel’s rise to fame is as unique as his music, and includes all the hallmarks of a great artist – from talent to a passion for making the kind of art that he believed in most.
Miguel was born Miguel Jontel Pimentel on October 23, 1985. The future star was born to a black mother and a Mexican American father in San Pedro, a working class neighborhood in Los Angeles. It was Miguel’s parents that first shared the world of music with him, and their diverse musical interests would later influence Miguel’s hybrid musical style. His mother was a fan of classic R&B singers, while his father listened to more modern styles like funk, hip-hop, and rock. His father also appreciated jazz. Miguel loved all of it, and listened to everything that his parents played.
Miguel’s future plans changed many times in his life, but music was involved in every version. When Miguel was very young, he hoped to be a dancer. Later, after his parents divorced, he began focusing on the idea of making music himself. By the age of 13, Miguel was already getting serious about his hobby. He began writing songs and, by the following year, was recording songs on a four-track recorder borrowed from his uncle.
When he was still in ninth grade, Miguel was introduced to the production company Drop Squad. He signed on with the company in 2000, and spent most of his high school years in the recording studio, learning how to make the most of his talents.
In 2004, having learned the ins and outs of recording and having secured the backing of Drop Squad, Miguel was able to secure a record deal. With Black Ice, an independent record company, he started working on his debut album. That album, Young & Free, never came out: the record company shelved the project, and the little work that did see the light of day wasn’t in Miguel’s preferred style. Miguel walked away from his deal with Black Ice, determined to work with a record company that would let him express the full range of his artistic vision.
After the deal with Black Ice fell apart, Miguel's manager began sending his work to music industry mogul Mark Pitts. Eventually, one of Miguel’s songs got Pitts’ attention. Miguel signed with Jive Records in 2007 and began recording a fresh debut album, All I Want Is You.
But releasing All I Want Is You turned out to be tougher than Miguel had imagined. Black Ice sued him for breach of contract, delaying the release of the record. When all was said and done, All I Want Is You was delayed several years: it wasn’t released until 2010. By that time, Jive Records was being dissolved. The delayed album was under-promoted and looked like a commercial flop.
But, remarkably, All I Want Is You didn’t disappear when it fell off the charts. Instead, it re-entered the Billboard 200 and rose steadily to number 37. All I Want Is You was a sleeper hit, and Miguel was a rising star.
Jive Records’ demise meant that Miguel’s contract was absorbed back into Jive’s parents company, RCA. His next album, Kaleidoscope Dream (2012), was released on that label. Kaleidoscope Dream showed Miguel taking further control of his musical vision: he insisted on writing and producing the bulk of the new album. The result was a commercial and critical hit. The album’s single, “Adorn,” became a sleeper hit and reached number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100.
With Kaleidoscope Dream, Miguel firmly established himself as one of the R&B genre’s most consistent hitmakers – as well as one of its most innovative voices. Miguel was a legitimate star: fans rushed to buy Miguel tickets and albums, and he got the opportunity to perform alongside superstars like Mariah Carey.
Miguel’s rise to fame wasn’t without its hiccups: in 2013, he made the headlines for all the wrong reasons. During a performance of his hit single Adorn at the Billboard Music Awards, Miguel tried to leap from one part of the stage to the other – and missed. As a result, he landed on two fans. The incident gained Miguel a bit of Internet notoriety – though it also helped draw attention to his on-stage performances, which are always energetic and exciting. Thankfully for Miguel, his musical rise continued unabated, and helped him put the embarrassing incident in the rearview mirror.
Miguel followed his 2012 effort with Wildheart (2015). Once again, Miguel pushed the limits of his genre while touching on all of the elements that keep fans coming back to R&B. Fans and critics responded with enthusiasm: as with Kaleidoscope Dream, Miguel won universal critical acclaim from R&B and mainstream critics alike. Fans helped the record reach the number two spot on the Billboard 200 albums chart, proving once again that Miguel’s appeal isn’t limited to any kind of niche audience.
Today, Miguel is at the height of his powers. The 30-year-old singer is at the top of his game, delivering album after album of thoughtful and passionate pop. Fans around the country and around the world are quick to snap up Miguel tickets and albums – Miguel’s energetic stage show is as well-known as his recording studio skills. Miguel is one of the most important and most innovative voices in the R&B genre, and fans can look forward to hearing much more from him in the years to come.
