Mumford & Sons Bio

Mumford & Sons is one of the most popular rock and roll bands performing today. Just three albums into their career, they’ve won Grammys, thrilled countless fans at live shows, and sold millions of records around the world. Since the group’s late 2010s breakout, Mumford & Sons tickets have sold as well in the United States as they have in the group’s native United Kingdom, and critics and fans alike eagerly await their next album release.

Mumford & Sons’ story begins in December of 2007. That’s when Marcus Mumford, Ben Lovett, Winston Marshall and Ted Dwane – all multi-instrumentalists and talented musicians – came together to form a new folk-rock group. From the start, the new group was a unique kind of band. In Mumford & Sons, each member was capable of playing a wide range of instruments – including some unique ones, like the banjo, mandolin, and resonator guitar. Those odd instruments each have their roots in folk music. Combined with Mumford & Sons’ folk-influenced songwriting, the acoustic instrumentation gives the band a distinct folky sound. It wasn’t the sort of music that was often played on the radio – but Mumford & Sons would soon change that.

The newly formed Mumford & Sons began playing shows around London, particularly in West London. With other folk-rock groups also playing in the area, the community was quickly labeled the West London folk scene – though members of Mumford & Sons have been quick to dispute this, saying there was nothing exclusive or “scene”-like about it.

Still, the rise of the West London folk scene helped draw attention to Mumford & Sons and the type of music they were playing. They caught the attention of management company Everybody’s in 2008 and soon began touring the United Kingdom, giving British fans their first chance to buy Mumford & Sons tickets. An appearance at the Glastonbury Festival helped raise the band’s profile, and a trip to Australia planted the seeds of Mumford & Sons’ eventual international rise.

2008 was a big year for Mumford & Sons: their first recording also came out that year. Love Your Ground, an EP, had been made over the course of the prior year. It was the only EP that the group released before their breakout debut album. In 2009, the fast-rising band signed their first record deals. By the end of the year, they released their first album, Sigh No More.

Sales of Sigh No More started slow, but appearances on American TV and the success of the single “Little Lion Man” soon started pushing the album up the charts. When all was said and done, the band had a huge breakout album on their hands: Sigh No More peaked at number 2 on both the U.K. albums chart and the Billboard 200 albums chart in the United States. It went triple-platinum in the United States, double-platinum in the U.K., and multi-platinum in Australia, Canada, and several European countries. The album also earned the band two Grammy nominations, and their performance at the Grammys ceremony helped boost sales.

Mumford & Sons was suddenly one of the biggest bands in the world. Mumford & Sons tickets and albums were hot sellers not just in the band’s native United Kingdom, but in faraway countries like the United States and Australia. Their unique sound, far from being a liability, turned out to be a strength. Soon, other bands were emulating Mumford & Sons’ folk-rock style.

With their sophomore effort, Babel (2012), the band set out to prove that they could be consistent hitmakers. They succeeded. Babel was an immediate success, debuting at the top of both the U.S. and U.K. albums charts. It was the fastest-selling album of the year in the United Kingdom and set a record for first-week sales in the United States. Critics loved the album, too, and the record won the band their first Grammy award.

The band embarked on a world tour to support Babel in 2013, giving fans around the world the chance to get their hands on Mumford & Sons tickets. Unfortunately, trouble lay ahead: later in 2013, Ted Dwane was diagnosed with a blood clot. The medical incident forced the band to cancel the remainder of their summer tour dates, including a much-anticipated set at the Bonnaroo Music Festival. The group headed back to the United Kingdom to give Dwane time to recover.

Thankfully for the band and their fans, Dwane was back in action later that year, and the group was able to headline the 2013 Glastonbury Festival – the same huge festival that they’d played as relative unknowns back in 2008. Five years had made a huge difference for the band, which was now the main attraction. They won critical praise for their strong performance.

Mumford & Sons didn’t coast on their success. Soon after Dwane’s recovery, they headed back to the studio to record their third album. Wilder Mind was released in May of 2015. The new album proved to be yet another critical and commercial hit for the band. Wilder Mind debuted in the number one spot on albums charts in the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia. Critics praised the album, which featured innovations in the group’s sound. Wilder Mind shows the band experimenting with electric instruments and leaving behind some of their folk-influenced sound in favor of a fuller rock and roll style.

Today, Mumford & Sons is a band at the height of its powers. The four multi-instrumentalists that founded the group brought a whole new kind of sound out of the West London folk scene and used it to conquer the charts in their native United Kingdom and in faraway countries. And instead of stagnating, the group has insisted on changing their winning formula, proving that Mumford & Sons’ career won’t be defined by any single narrow style. It’s a bold decision, but one that has paid off for the band. Mumford & Sons remains one of the most important and popular rock bands of the 2010s, even as they make a case for being one of the era’s most innovative and influential groups.
