New York Islanders Overview

New York Islanders Franchise History

It was the year 1972 that the New York Islanders skated their way onto the professional hockey scene. Upon entering the league, the Islanders put together a regular season display that was nothing short of disastrous. As you would expect from a first-year franchise, the Islanders struggled. We're talking the kind of struggles that come with losing 60 games out of 78 total played. Yes, that was a less than ideal way for New York to get its start.

Things did get better for the Islanders a couple of seasons later when they had completed the resurgence and cruised into playoff land to take on their New York rival. The Islanders would dispose of the Rangers and actually make it all the way to the semis before being sent packing by the Philadelphia Flyers.

The good news is that this would start quite the hot streak for the Islanders, in that they would make a wildly ridiculous 14 straight trips to post-season play. But most Islanders supporters will nod in approval that the most recognizable memory of that stretch run for the club was from 1979 to 1983 when they rose above all the competition in the NHL and raised the Stanley Cup trophy high four years in a row. In fact, the latter two title triumphs saw the Islanders bring out the broom and sweep the competition in the final round, with Canadian friends the Vancouver Canucks and Edmonton Oilers standing no chance against the champs.

The fantastic run would end in 1984 at the hands of the Oilers, but it was certainly a ridiculously proud period for the Islanders organization. That tremendous level of success hasn't been around in the Islanders locker room since those glory days of winning titles regularly, as the club just hasn't gotten over the hump and made it back to the Stanley Cup round since then.

The Islanders suffered through a miserable stretch from 1994 to 2001 where they lost a whole lot of games en route to not making the playoffs a single time during that awful period. Luckily they were fortunate to return to the post-season after a 42-victory 2002 circuit, but still, the Conference Quarterfinals would be as far as they would be able to reach.

Overall, the Islanders have become quite the Quarterfinals team since then, as five trips to that round have produced zero series wins.

New York Islanders Marquee Players

Six numbers have found their way into the glory land of being retired by the Islanders franchise, with the first being Denis Potvin's No. 5 that was given the ultimate honor in 1992.

Bryan Trottier has had his number put away by the club thanks to his whopping 1,353 points scored, which of course is the team highest total since they've been skating around on the ice. Potvin comes in at third on that list having also reached the 1,000 point tally during his supremely awesome career.

In terms of the Islanders single season awesomeness, it's Mike Bossy that holds the record for goals and points in a single campaign, as he really helped fuel the the organization from the late 70s to early 80s.

New York Islanders Conference and Stanley Cup Titles

Although it's been a while since the word “championship” had been brought up at Islanders games, the franchise does boast some impressive trophies.

The four straight Stanley Cup crowns in the mid-80s certainly marks the pinnacle of Islanders success since the franchise's inception, and honestly, it'll be hard to see that replicated given the current state of the NHL and all the parity that can rule over the league.

That was an absolutely franchise-defining run for the Islanders overall, and while it isn't all that probably that we'll ever seen it again, Islanders fans will no doubt remember those glory days.

The Islanders have also found a way to compile six conference titles to go along with six divisional crowns throughout their history, so even if they haven't found one recently, they can at least look back to all the success that they achieved early on.

New York Islanders Venue Information

The Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum became home to the Islanders when they were first thrown into the hockey mix, but New York had to get scurrying out eventually. The Nassau Coliseum welcome over 16,000 fans for Islanders games during the team's heyday, but after it became obvious that a move was necessarily, the newly built Barclays Center would serve as the Islanders new stomping grounds.

The Barclays Center has essentially hosted every event under the sun since it first opened in 2012, so the Islanders do have to share with the Brooklyn Nets and a whole lot of other people when it comes to events at the venue.

It does seat nearly 16,000 for all Islanders home games, and it continues to look at new renovations for the future since it is still rather fresh from a venue standpoint and doesn't need a whole lot of work or improvements this early on in its history.

New York Islanders 2014 Season Recap

A losing record during the 2013-2014 season was not what the Islanders faithful wanted. Especially not after the Islanders had finally found a little bit of momentum after making the post-season the year before for the first time in six years.

So luckily, the Islanders rescued the fans from their worries and cruised their way back into the playoffs with a very nice 47-win season. Hope had been restored for Islanders fans since that was the most wins the franchise had seen since the 1983-1984 season.

Did this result in Stanley Cup triumph after so many years without it? Um, not quite. The team went flying out in the Quarterfinals yet again after losing a heartbreaking seven game stanza to Washington. What is it about the Conference Quarterfinals that the Islanders can't seem to get past? The Islanders' bad voodoo has been on their back for many years now at this point.

Still, it was definitely good progress for the Islanders overall, and there's at least now some confidence and hope heading into what should be another fun-filled campaign next year.
