New York Knicks Overview

The New York Knicks were founded back in 1946. They are one of just two franchises that still remain in the original city the franchise began in. New York is known as the mecca of basketball. The Knicks home arena is called Madison Square Garden. “The Garden” as it is commonly referred to is located in downtown Manhattan. The Garden is a special arena and its fans have seen great performances from some of the best players to ever play the game. There is something about the aura of being in downtown New York that seems to get players juices flowing to another level. For years, players have always raved about playing at MSG. Many have said that it is their favorite place to play. Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, and LeBron James have all put on epic performances in front of the New York crowd. It is New York Knick Carmelo Anthony who claims the scoring record at MSG with 62 points. The recent version of the Knicks have not been overly successful. They are currently in rebuilding mode, but they do have the first piece of the puzzle set in Carmelo Anthony. In 2011 the Knicks made a huge trade with the Denver Nuggets to acquire the scoring machine that is known as Carmelo Anthony. This deal came one year after the team signed star Amare Stoudemire from the Phoenix Suns. With Stoudemire and Anthony intact the Knicks were much improved. The same year the team acquired Anthony they reached the playoffs for the first time in seven years. They were swept in the opening round of the playoffs, and subsequently traded for Tyson Chandler in an effort to improve their defense. The next year they avoided a sweep, but lost in the first round to the eventual NBA champion Miami Heat. 2014 was the best season for the Knicks in recent memory. They put together a very good regular season and this time moved on to the second round of the playoffs before falling.

The Amare Stoudemire era in New York never went as planned. Stoudemire was great in Phoenix but knee issues limited him in New York. Stoudemire, Chandler, and other role players such as Iman Shumpert and JR smith have all been traded recently. Carmelo Anthony is the one player that remains as the team looks to rebuild again. The rebuilding process begun with new president Phil Jackson inserted into the organization. Jackson is the winningest coach in NBA history and the Knicks are hoping a great basketball mind like his can help turn the franchise around. The Phil Jackson era started off on the wrong foot as the Knicks had a franchise worst 17-65 record in 2015. Carmelo Anthony sat out most of the year with a knee injury and with Anthony back and a high draft pick coming for Jackson, the Knicks will look to turn things around in 2016.

The New York Knicks have won two championships in their long history, both of which came during the 1970’s. Walt Frazier and Willis Reed were the main catalyst of the first championship in 1970. Willis Reed is famous for playing hurt in game seven of the NBA finals in 1970. Reed tore a muscle in his leg earlier in the series but wanted to give his team a boost by attempting to play in game seven. Reed actually scored the first two baskets for the Knicks. He never scored again but his attempt at playing with such a severe injury was thought to provide great motivation for the Knicks, who went on to win game seven and claim their first NBA championship. Despite the injury Willis Reed was named finals MVP. He had already claimed the regular season and all-star game MVP’s earlier in the season which made him the first player to take home all three MVP trophies. The Knicks fell short in defending their title the next two years, as they lost in the eastern conference finals in 1971 and lost in the NBA finals in 1972. In 1973 they returned to the finals for the third time in four years and this time took home their second championship. A trade that acquired Earl Monroe helped the Knicks get back over the hump. They also got revenge over the Los Angeles Lakers who defeated them in the finals the year prior. After the second championship the Knicks went through a long rebuilding phase where they were just a middle of the pack team.

They became a contender again in 1985 when they selected Patrick Ewing with the first pick in the draft. After years of being a playoff team that was not able to make a deep run, in 1991 the Knicks named famous Lakers coach Pat Riley as their new head coach. Pat Riley employed a physical nature that the Knicks were known for during the 1990’s. They were a tough hard-nosed defensive team led by the big man in the middle in Ewing. The Knicks won division titles in 1989, 1993, and 1994. They won conference titles in 1994 and 1999 but could never obtain the third championship for the franchise. The Knicks built a nice roster around Patrick Ewing with players such as Mark Jackson, Charles Oakley, John Starks, and Charlie Ward. Ultimately this Knicks team just never had enough offense to compete with teams such as Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls. Patrick Ewing was a great player that never won an NBA championship. Ewing holds many New York Knick records to this day. He is the franchise leader in games played, points, rebounds, blocked shots, steals, along with many more.

Phil Jackson hired former guard Derrick Fisher as his head coach last season. Fisher played for Jackson and knows how to run his famous triangle offense, but he had no prior coaching experience. Jackson was a great coach so he should know a good coach when he sees one. The Phil Jackson era has gotten off to a rough start, but if anyone can turn this franchise back into a contender, it is him. The Knicks first selection in the upcoming draft could go a long way into deciding their immediate future.
