Bombers of the Bronx: A Brief History of the New York Yankees

Arguably the most iconic franchise in all of sports and undoubtedly one of the most successful, the New York Yankees have made incredible contributions to the history of MLB in each decade of their existence. The storied franchise has accumulated an incredible 40 American League Pennants and 27 World Series Titles and is one of the most valuable franchises in any sport throughout the world. Countless All-stars and an MLB record 22 Hall-of-famers have worn the pinstripes, the Yanks are known for their commitment to winning and are not shy about spending to put together the best possible collection of talent for their passionate fan base.

Established in 1903 as the New York Highlanders, the club adopted the name Yankees in 1913. Although the club would not see any early success, they would claim a few 2nd place finishes but were overall an afterthought in the AL. December 26, 1919 would see a transaction that would alter the course for two franchises and is possibly the most significant transaction in MLB history. For $100,000, the Yankees purchased the contract of Babe Ruth from the Boston Red Sox. Ruth had shown some prowess as a Pitcher in the early part of his career and had developed into a quality hitter as well. No one could have anticipated the greatness that would follow.

Ruth would go on a tear and develop into the most prolific Home Run hitter of the era and possibly MLB history. Throughout the 1920s, Ruth would be at the heart of the order for a feared lineup that would come to be known as ‘Murderer’s Row.’ The Yanks would make it to the World Series an incredible six times in the decade, going 3-3. The 1927 club is regarded as one of the greatest teams in MLB history, winning 110 games and sweeping the World Series behind Ruth, Lou Gehrig and the rest of the bats that made up one of the most prolific offenses in history.

The calendar and cast of characters would change but the Yanks would remain a constant. The club would play in five more World Series in the 1930s, winning all five. 1936 would see the debut of Joe DiMaggio, who would go on to a career regarded as one of the finest in MLB history. Another decade and another five World Series, the Bronx Bombers would win four more titles in the 1940s. Another franchise icon would come into play, as Mickey Mantle would make his debut in 1951. The period of 1950 through 1959 would see the Yanks return to the World Series a phenomenal eight more times, going 6-2.

The 1960s would start with the Yankees in their usual position of representing the AL in World Series play, appearing in the Fall Classic each year from 1960 through 1964 while winning two more titles. The Home Run prowess of both Mantle and Roger Maris was a sight to behold, with Maris crushing a then record 61 HRs in 1961. Aging stars would finally lead to a much overdue decline in 1965 and the Yanks era of dominance would come to an end. After finishing 6th in 1965, the bottom would come crashing out in 1966 with a record of 70-89 and a last place finish. The club would go on to miss the playoffs for eleven consecutive years, something that was hard to fathom for the faithful who had become accustomed to prolific success.

A 1973 ownership change would lead the franchise on the path to return to its former glory. George Steinbrenner purchased the team and proceeded to remake the franchise through the advent of free agency. Notable acquisitions such as Catfish Hunter and Reggie Jackson would join existing stars Thurman Munson and Ron Guidry and return the club to postseason play. The Yankees would go to three consecutive World Series from 1976 through 1978, winning the final two. Playoff appearances in 1980 and 1981 would bring the era known as ‘The Bronx Zoo’ to a close and the Yanks and their fans would enter another dark period in their history.

The remainder of the 1980s and early 1990s were mainly a struggle for the Bombers. Several swings and misses in free agency failed to yield the results expected. One of the bright spots of the era was the play of Don Mattingly, regarded as one of the finest players of the era. Donnie Baseball would fail to taste postseason success, as the Yanks would not return to prominence until his career was winding down. The strike-shortened 1994 season would see the pieces finally start to come together. The Yanks were in 1st place when the remainder of the season was cancelled, but would carry the momentum into the 1995 season.

October baseball returned to the Bronx and seemingly took up a permanent residence. Beginning in 1995, the Yanks would qualify for postseason play in seventeen of the next eighteen seasons – unheard of success in the modern era of MLB. The team was a well-oiled machine and became known for their ability to acquire interchangeable parts, nailing more than their share of their frequent free agent acquisitions. The club would add another five World Series titles to its mantle during the era, highlighted by the three-year run of dominance from 1998 through 2000 that would see the Bombers win the title each year. Father time caught up to the dynasty and the franchise would say goodbye to the new era of icons, including Mariano Rivera in 2013 and Derek Jeter in 2014.

The Yankees have drawn over 3 million fans in each season dating back to 1999, highlighted by a four year stretch of 4 million plus from 2005 through 2008. The new Yankee Stadium opened to rave reviews in 2009 and continues to pack them in. Young pitching sensation Masahiro Tanaka and the usual collection of prolific bats, including a returning Alex Rodriguez, promises to make the 2015 Yankees a hot ticket as they seek to return October baseball to the Bronx.
