Nicki Minaj Biography

In the male-dominated world of rap, Nicki Minaj is a breath of fresh air. Her unique style and persona have given her a career that outlasted her doubters. These days, Minaj is a force to be reckoned with in the hip-hop industry. She’s the only woman to make Forbes’ Hip Hop Cash Kings list, and her albums – including her remarkable breakout record, Pink Friday – are essential listening for hip-hop fans. Nicki Minaj tickets are among the hottest sellers in the industry, and she regularly performs live and in the studio with superstar peers like Kanye West and Drake.

But it’s been a long journey to the top for Nicki Minaj, who was born outside the country and raised in South Jamaica, Queens, a tough neighborhood in New York City. Nothing was handed to Minaj – she had to work her way up from the bottom as a relative unknown.

Nicki Minaj was born Onika Tanya Maraj in Saint James, Trinidad and Tobago. Her father was a mixed-race man of black and Asian Indian heritage, and her mother was of African descent. Her family would be instrumental in her life, but not always in a good way: troubles with her parents would influence her persona and her music.

Her father had an interest in music, but also a crippling addiction. He dabbled in soul singing but earned his money as a financial executive – until his problems with drugs, alcohol, and violence derailed his life. Minaj’s father had a terrible anger problem. At one point he even burned down the family home, allegedly in order to kill Minaj’s mother. Luckily, nobody was killed.

Minaj’s troubled family didn’t stay in Trinidad and Tobago. Soon they had moved to New York City, where her mother attended college in the Bronx. The family eventually found a home in the neighborhood of South Jamaica, Queens.

Minaj’s musical talents were already on display from a young age. She managed to win admission to LaGuardia High School in Manhattan, a public high school with a focus on the arts. There, Minaj honed her skills as a performer. When she graduated, she planned to become an actress.

But Minaj’s acting career was not destined to be. She earned minor parts, but she couldn’t make ends meet by acting. Instead, Minaj paid the bills through a series of low-paying jobs. She was fired frequently because of attitude problems. During this time Minaj tried out a wide variety of careers: she spent time as a waitress, administrative assistant, office manager, and more. None of them called to her in the way that music did.

In the late 2000s, Minaj shifted her focus to the world of music. She joined a rap group called The Hoodstars and worked with the rap/production group Full Force. As a group, The Hoodstars weren’t destined to last, but Minaj would meet a fellow rapper – Safaree Samuels – who she would date until 2014. After a short time with the group, Minaj decided that she wasn’t satisfied with her career there and walked away from the deal, electing instead to try to get noticed by uploading music to her Myspace page. It worked: Minaj was soon picked up by Dirty Money Entertainment in Brooklyn.

While with Dirty Money Entertainment, Minaj released a series of mixtapes that earned favorable critical response and airplay on BET and MTV. That success drew the attention of rap superstar Lil Wayne. Minaj signed with his record company, Young Money Entertainment, and started working on her debut album.

That album, Pink Friday, was a breakthrough record for Minaj. Seven of its singles were on the Billboard Hot 100 simultaneously – a record for a female artist – and the album itself hit number one and went platinum. Minaj toured with fellow superstars like Britney Spears, and she got plenty of television exposure. In fact, Minaj caught some flak for the particular type of TV exposure she got: during a live performance on Good Morning America, Minaj’s bare nipple slipped out of her extremely revealing low-cut shirt. That prompted plenty of outrage from the conservative Parents Television Council, but it only served to promote Minaj even more. That same year, Minaj performed live on Saturday Night Live. It was hard to turn on a TV without seeing rap’s newest superstar.

Only one person seemed to dislike Nicki Minaj’s sudden rise to fame: Lil’ Kim, who had previously been the most important female performer in the rap scene. Lil’ Kim accused Minaj of stealing her musical style, and suddenly Minaj had a rap feud on her hands. The two would exchange diss tracks for years to come.

Minaj’s huge breakout wasn’t beginner’s luck. She proved that when she went back to the studio for her second album, 2012’s Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded. The new album included plenty of hits, including one – “Stupid Hoe” – that seemed to be aimed at Lil’ Kim. 2012 was another huge year for Minaj, who made the biggest live appearance of her career when she appeared in the Super Bowl XLVI halftime show. Minaj joined fellow rapper M.I.A. and pop star Madonna to perform “Give Me All Your Luvin,” a Madonna track that featured the two rappers.

Minaj had begun to make the jump from music personality to celebrity, and she continued the transition by landing the role of a judge on American Idol. Minaj was now a television star as well as a musician, but she didn’t let her fame get in the way of her production. She released her third album, The Pinkprint, in 2014. The new album included a sensational video for the song “Anaconda” – in the video, Minaj gives rap star Drake a lap dance – that set the record for views within 24 hours on the music video site Vevo. Minaj went back on tour, giving many fans a chance to get their hands on Nicki Minaj tickets for the first time in several years (Minaj had played shows but had not done a full-fledge tour since 2012). Minaj’s personal life changed around this time as well – she split with her longtime boyfriend and began dating rapper Meek Mill.

Minaj’s body of work is already impressive, but this is really just the beginning. Minaj has grown into her role as one of rap’s most important voices and personalities, and she’s showing no signs of slowing down. Fans should expect much more to come from Nicki Minaj.
