NOTRE DAME FIGHTING IRISH FOOTBALL OVERVIEW

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish football program is one of the most recognizable football programs in all of college football. Notre Dame has a strong tradition of winning and still remains one of the most popular college football programs in the country. The gold helmets, the famous football movie Rudy, and the many National Championships make Notre Dame a truly unique football program. Notre Dame is one of the most decorated college football programs with multiple National Championships and multiple Heisman Trophy Winners. Even though Notre Dame has experienced its good and bad seasons over the last decade, the Fighting Irish are on the rise and are transforming into a dominant college football program once again.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football program has its beginnings going all the back to 1887 but didn’t burst onto the national scene until 1913. The first great coach that Notre Dame had was Knute Rockne who coached from 1918-1930. Under Rockne, Notre Dame won 3 National Championships (1924, 1929, and 1930). Rockne remained coach until 1930 until his tragic death in 1931 when he was involved in a plane crash. The Fighting Irish saw two more coaches from 1931-1940 in Heartley Anderson and Elmer Layden. Both men had successful careers as head coaches of Notre Dame but both ended up resigning from their positions. The next great coach for Notre Dame was Frank Leahy who coached from 1941-1953. Leahy won 4 National Championships (1943, 1946, 1947, and 1949) which helped bring a national spotlight back to Notre Dame. Leahy served in the Navy from 1944-1945 and did not coach during that time period. Leahy left the position in 1953. After the Leahy departure, Notre Dame took a big hit and was on the down slope until 1964. In that time span between 1953-1964, the program saw 3 different head coaches: Terry Brennan, Joe Kuharich, and Hugh Devore. In 1964, with the hire of new coach Ara Parseghian, the Fighting Irish saw a positive shift in the program. During his coaching career, Parseghian led the Notre Dame to 2 National Championships (1966 and 1973). Parseghian was forced to retire in 1974 because of health related issues and was replaced by Dan Devine in 1975. Devine led Notre Dame to a National Championship in 1977 and had a fair amount of success until 1981 when he was replaced by Dan Faust. Coach Faust only lasted until 1985 when he resigned from his position as fans were calling for him to be fired. Faust would be replaced by legendary coach Lou Holtz.

Lou Holtz was hired in 1986 and is one of the most successful coaches in Notre Dame’s history. Holtz came into a struggling program and completely turned it around. With Holtz leading the team, The Fighting Irish were constantly in the top ranks of college football for his 10 year coaching career. Holtz won the National Championship in 1988. Although the career of Holtz didn’t result in multiple National Championships, Notre Dame was once again a winning program that got a lot of national attention and was a constant presence in bowl games. Holtz made 3 appearances in the National Championship in which he lost. Holtz retired in 1996 from the head coaching position. Since the retirement of Lou Holtz, Notre Dame has seen its fair share of head coaching changes. From 1996-2010, Notre Dame head coaches: Bob Davie (1997-2001), Tyrone Willingham (2002-2004), Charlie Weis (2005-2009). In 2010, current head coach Brian Kelly was hired and looks to be leading Notre Dame in a positive direction. Kelly currently has a 51-21 record and has led Notre Dame to 6 bowl games in (2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, and 2016). Many think that Kelly can be the next Notre Dame coach that leads the team to a National Championship.

With Notre Dame constantly being in the national spotlight, the program is always attracting some of the country’s best players who have evolved into some of football’s greatest players ever. Notre Dame has the most players to ever win the Heisman Trophy with 7 winners in the program's history. The Heisman winners include: Angelo Bertelli, Johnny Lujack, Leon Hart, Johnny Lattner, Paul Hornung, John Huarte, and Tim Brown. Throughout the program's history, it has seen numerous All American selections each year. Other great players that played for Notre Dame include: Joe Montana, Jerome Bettis, Alan Page, Joe Theismann, Bob Golic, Dave Casper, Michael Floyd, Manti Te’o, Brady Quinn, Golden Tate, and many more. The great players that have come through Notre Dame is continuing to attract the nation's best players each season.

Although Notre Dame has seen its up and down years throughout its history, it seems that the Fighting Irish are on the rise and are close to being one of the top programs in the nation once again. Head coach Brian Kelly seems to be bringing back the program into the national spotlight and should be one of the top NCAA teams in the country. The strong tradition and history of Notre Dame Fighting Irish football could be making a comeback today and in years to come and will be a program to look out for.
