Oakland Raiders Overview

The Oakland Raiders have one of the most storied histories in the NFL. Although, you would not know that if you based your judgement off of the current team. The Raiders have not made the postseason since 2002, which was their only season above .500 in the last 12 years. The 2014 season ended up with just 3 wins under rookie quarterback Derrick Carr. That was a follow-up to two consecutive four win seasons 2012-2013. Although success has been hard to come by for the franchise, they believe with Derrick Carr they may have finally found their new franchise quarterback going forward. Of course, only time will tell.

Despite the recent string of horrid seasons, older NFL fans will tell you the Raiders used to be good. It would be hard for a young fan to believe but it is true. Not only did the Raiders make the playoffs in 2002, but they steamrolled through the first few rounds and made their way to the super bowl. They were led by quarterback Rich Gannon who won the MVP that season. Unfortunately Gannon did not have his best game and the Raiders fell short of winning the championship.

The team had a few other successful seasons with Gannon as quarterback. He also took home the MVP trophy in 2000. That year the team had one of its better seasons in quite some time. They won 12 games during the regular season and made an appearance in the AFC championship game where they would ultimately fall. The team also made the playoffs in 2001 but did not advance.

Prior to all of this success, the Oakland Raiders were not even located in Oakland. It was not until 1995 when the team moved back to Oakland. The roots of the franchise which were established in 1960 were in Oakland, but they made a move to Los Angeles in 1982. The franchise stayed there for 12 seasons before relocating back to where it all started. They are the last team to claim Los Angeles as their home, as the city is without a football team currently. Their time in Los Angeles was brief but it also brought success to the franchise.

The franchise has three super bowl titles in their history, one of which came in LA. It was the 1983 season, one year after moving to LA when it took place. That Raiders team was led by running back Marcus Allen. He was a hardnosed runner who is considered one of the greatest of all time. The Raiders had another 12-4 season and worked their way through the AFC playoffs with ease. They faced the Washington Redskins in the super bowl and once again won in dramatic fashion. This third championship was not long after the first two.

The relevance of the franchise started in 1963 when Al Davis became the head coach and general manager of the team. Davis would make a long career with the Raiders, but his coaching stint was short. He was known at the time for creating the offense based upon speed and throwing down the field. He was also known for being the youngest coach and general manager in the AFL at the time. Davis would coach the team for three years before leaving to take another job with the NFL. He return shortly but this time as a partial owner, where he would still be in charge of making the football moves.

Shortly afterwards came the 1970s, which would end up being the best decade for Raider nation. The team’s coach during this time was John Madden. Madden would become a hall of fame coach, a great broadcaster, and it is his name that is behind the NFL video games named “Madden”. Under Madden the Raiders always experienced regular season success. In fact they never had a losing season. Their success carried over into the playoffs and eventually they won the first super bowl in franchise history in 1976. The team had eight future hall of famers and won many games with its stingy and hard hitting defense. Madden ended up leaving the franchise after ten years, but their second super bowl victory came shortly after.

Tom Flores who had been an Oakland quarterback took over as head coach and led the team to the super bowl in 1980. The team won despite only going 9-7 that year. They made the wild card and at the time were the only team to ever win the super bowl after starting in the wild card round. Flores also led the team to their championship in 1983.

To go along with the three super bowl titles, the Raiders also won a championship in 1967 before the AFL-NFL merger. They have taken advantage of their opportunities as they won the super bowl three out of the four times that they reached that point. The franchise also has 15 division titles and 21 playoff appearances in their history. They also have a laundry list of hall of fame players. Most notable are Tim Brown, Jerry Rice, Rod Woodson, Eric Dickerson, Marcus Allen, Ronnie Lot, just to name a few.

Unfortunately the Raiders franchise is a long way from the good ole days. The team has struggled mightily to get back to glory; or simply to get back into the playoff picture. Raiders fan have had over a decade of watching their team struggle to even reach six wins. On the positive side, in this past year’s draft, they added a talented wide receiver named Amari Cooper out of Alabama that will give Carr a serious weapon to build with moving forward. Those two will need plenty more help, especially on the defensive side of the ball, but at least they are potential building blocks to start with.
