Oklahoma Sooners Football Details

The Oklahoma Sooners are looking like the great Sooner teams of the past as they really shined bright in 2015. Under the direction of head coach Bob Stoops, the Sooners made it into the College Football Playoff in 2015. The Sooners have always been near the top of the Big 12 but have struggled at times when it comes to the national spotlight in the past. The great play from QB Baker Mayfield helped the Sooners make a magical run and the Sooners look to use that momentum of 2015 to propel them into the national spotlight heading forward. Norman, OK is rockin’ again and it’s because of Oklahoma Sooner football.

Oklahoma Sooner football had its start beginning in 1895 and it’s been a strong presence in Oklahoma ever since. The first real coach was Vernon Louis Parrington who began in 1897 and coached until 1901. Over the next four years, the Sooners had 3 different coaches: Fred Roberts, Mark McMahon, and Fred Ewing. But in 1905, Oklahoma would get a prestigious coach in Bennie Owen who coached from 1905-1926. Owen was very successful over his career at Oklahoma having a 122-54 record. Owen had 2 undefeated seasons and retired in 1926. The Oklahoma Sooners Football program saw a lot of changes in head coaches from 1926-1947 due to many different factors such as losing seasons, coaches retiring, coaches leaving because of the war, coaches being fired, and much more. From 1926-1947 the Oklahoma Sooners football coaches were: Adrian Lindsey, Lewie Hardage, Biff Jones, Tom Stidham, Dewey Luster, and Jim Tatum. Bud Wilkinson was the next Oklahoma Sooners coach who had a long tenure with the program from 1947-1963. Wilkinson’s career was very successful with the Sooners as he went 145-29 in his career, 14 conference titles, and 3 National Championships (1950, 1955, and 1956). From 1964-1967, the Sooners had two different coaches, Gomer Jones was hired after Wilkinson and only lasted two seasons when Jim Mckenzie took over as head coach but only coached one season as he unexpectedly passed away from a heart attack. Chuck Fairbanks was the next head coach for Oklahoma and he coached from 1967-1972 going 52-15 and winning 3 conference championships before leaving to coach in the NFL. The Sooners were still searching for their right coach.

In 1973, Oklahoma hired Barry Switzer and in almost no time at all, Switzer helped change the Oklahoma program into a powerhouse in college football. In Switzer’s coaching career from 1973-1988, he had a 157-29 record which included 3 National Championships (1974, 1975, and 1985), and 12 Big Eight Conference titles. Switzer had a passion that he brought to the team that helped Oklahoma become great once again. As Switzer left in 1989 for the NFL, his replacement was Gary Gibbs who coached until 1994. Gibbs would have a decent career with Oklahoma but resigned in 1994 with a 44-23 record. Legendary Miami coach Howard Schnellenberger coached the Sooners for one season in 1995 but wasn’t liked very much by the Oklahoma community and didn’t finish with a good record. The Sooners hired John Blake from 1996-1998, but didn’t have a winning season and was fired with a 12-22 record. Current Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops was hired in 1999 and has had a lot of success in the program. Currently Stoops is 179-46 with, one National Championship in 2000, 9 Conference titles, hasn’t ever been out of the top 5 in the Big 12 Conference. The success Stoops has experienced makes Sooner fans excited about the future because many believe that Stoops and the Sooners can once again capture another National Championship.

The talent that the Oklahoma Sooners program has had over its history is up there with any college football program ever. The Sooners have had 4 Heisman Trophy winners: Billy Vessels, Steve Owens, Billy Sims, Jason White, and Sam Bradford. But the Sooners roster has always been full of talented players that often go on to have great NFL careers, some of the best Sooner players have been: Adrian Peterson, Gerald McCoy, Roy Williams, Brian Bosworth, Keith Jackson, DeMarco Murray, Trent Williams, and numerous others. The University of Oklahoma Sooners will likely always have elite players that will turn into NFL superstars.

Many wrote off Oklahoma but they really put on a show in 2015 as they made it into the College Football Playoffs. In 2016, the Sooners are out to win it all and bring home another National Championship to Norman. Bob Stoops has his team heading in the right direction and Sooner fans are itching for football season to come around so they can watch the 2016 Sooners fight for a spot in the College Football Playoffs once again.
