Orlando Magic Overview

The Orlando Magic earned the rights to the fifth selection in the upcoming NBA draft. That placement in the draft is an example of where the franchise currently stands. The Magic are in the middle of rebuilding the team, but they are heading the right direction. They have been towards the top of the draft in the past few years and have selected some players that have shown promise towards turning the team back into a contender. Rookie point guard Elfrid Payton played well down the stretch of this season. Shooting guard Victor Oladipo was selected second overall in the 2013 draft. Oladipo has been inconsistent at times, but also has had glimpses where he looks like a future superstar. Tobias Harris and Nikola Vucevic have played very well since coming to Orlando. With a good selection in the fifth slot this year, and a healthy Aaron Gordon, who was drafted fourth overall last year, the Orlando Magic will have a good young nucleus to build around.

The Magic were contenders in the eastern conference until star big man Dwight Howard was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers back in 2012. Howard was the cornerstone of the franchise since he was drafted first in the 2004 draft. He led the franchise to one of their two conference titles in 2009. They drafted the athletic big man that was built like a brick wall straight out of high school. He was the anchor down low and head coach Stan Van Gundy would build a lineup around him that would take the team to the top of the eastern conference. Van Gundy’s strategy was to have Howard control the paint, and to surround him with shooters such as JJ Reddick, Rashard Lewis, Vince Carter, Jameer Nelson, and so on. This strategy made Orlando impossible to defend. Howard would dominate inside with single coverage, and if you doubled teamed him, he would kick it out to wide open shooters. It worked well enough in that 2009 season for the Magic to upset LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers, despite gaudy numbers from James, in order to reach the finals for just the second time in franchise history. They would lose in the finals to the Los Angeles Lakers. After that season the honey moon between Howard and the Magic was over. The Magic were a good team, but other than that one season, were not necessarily championship material. Howard wanted to go to a bigger market and to a team that could compete for a championship. Eventually in 2012 he requested a trade that sent him to Los Angeles.

Prior to Dwight Howard, the Orlando franchise has had many other superstars. Overall, the franchise has only been around since 1989 when they became an expansion team in the NBA. The team resides in downtown Orlando, Florida and they play in an arena known as the Amway Center. They reside in the southeast division of the eastern conference due to their location. Being a relatively new franchise, the Magic have never won a championship. Although, they have had many playoff appearances already, with five division titles and two eastern conference championships. Early on the Magic struggled mightily, which one would expect from an expansion team. In 1992 they earned the first pick in the draft and selected big man Shaquille O’Neal. O’Neal was a monster inside, even in his early days. In his rookie season the team improved by twenty victories in the win column. Shaq as he is called, was the big man whom Dwight Howard was trying to replace. He even adopted Shaq’s nickname “superman”. O’Neal won rookie of the year, but the Magic still missed the playoffs. Their fortunes would grow even greater with a stroke of luck in NBA draft the following year. Despite having the worst odds in acquiring the number one overall pick in the Draft, the Magic won the lottery and earned that pick for the second year in a row. They ended up drafting Chris Webber and traded him for the number three pick, Anfernee Hardaway. The addition of Hardaway gave the Magic one of the best guard-big men duo’s in the NBA. In 1995, just sixth years into their history, they picked up big man Horace Grant in free agency and became an instant contender. That season they would earn the number one seed in the east and reached the NBA finals for the first time. The team would get swept in the finals and also had the same result the following year in the eastern conference finals against Michael Jordan and the Bulls. This Magic team was very talented but could not overcome other teams in order to win a championship.

The team took a huge blow following the loss to the Chicago Bulls, as center Shaquille O’Neal elected to head to Los Angeles in free agency. That decision led Anfernee Hardaway to carry the team, and as great as he was, he could not carry the team deep into the playoffs alone. In the year 2000, Hardaway was traded and the franchise was back where it started. After losing Hardaway, the team made an immediate splash in the following offseason. They signed wing players Tracy McGrady and Grant Hill. While Orlando was once again a playoff caliber team, the moves never quite panned out as planned. This was largely due to Hill’s inability to stay healthy. Grant Hill was an ultra-talented player but battled through many injuries and ultimately did not play that many games in a Magic Jersey. McGrady was traded prior to the 2004 season and never had a chance to play with Dwight Howard. That duo may have been able to do big things but we will never know. With Dwight now gone too, the franchise is in full rebuild mode. They currently do not have any star players, although they have yet to win a championship even with the laundry list of star players they have already had. The franchise has been exciting to watch in their short history, and now we will see what the next chapter has in store.
