PENN STATE NITTANY LIONS FOOTBALL OVERVIEW

After a disappointing 2015 campaign where the Penn State Nittany Lions football team went 7-6, this historic program looks to turn things around in 2016. Penn State has been one of the great college football programs to ever exist with legendary players and coaching having come through that school. They have recently slipped a little in national prominence because of the strength in the Big 10 Conference but have always remained competitive. Current head coach James Franklin believes that his squad has the potential to be as talented as the Penn State teams in the past.

The Penn State Nittany Lions football program has roots dating back to 1887 where football first began at the school. As the school started to develop the program, it started to have some success as the years went along which included two National Championships in 1911 and 1912. The Penn State program saw many coaches from 1887-1917 which included: George W. Hoskins, Samuel B. Newton, Sam Boyle, Pop Golden, Daniel A. Reed, Dick Harlow, and many more. In 1918, Penn State had its first coach to have a fairly long tenure. Hugo Bezdek began the Penn State job in 1918 and coached until 1929. Bezdek struggled early in his coaching career with the Nittany Lions but eventually found a lot of success with ending his career with an overall record of 65-30. Bezdek led Penn State to two undefeated seasons and a Rose Bowl appearance before resigning to be the school’s athletic director. Former player Bob Higgins was the next coach for Penn State in 1930. Higgins had success with the program going 91-57 until he was forced to retire due to poor health in 1948. Higgins had 11 winning seasons in his time with Penn State. Joe Bedenk was promoted to be coach in 1949 and went 5-4 before he asked to be return to an assistant coaching position with the team. The next head coach was Rip Engle who began the coaching job in 1950. Engle had come from coaching at Brown. Engle had a lot of success at Penn State as he never recorded a losing season while coaching the Nittany Lions. Engle went 104-48 as he coached until 1965. Engle took Penn State to 4 bowl games in his career and won 3 of them before retiring in 1965. The next Penn State coach would turn out to be one of the greatest coaches to ever coach in college football and would become an icon not only at Penn State but around the college football world.

In 1966, Penn State hired head coach Joe Paterno who was previously an assistant with the team. Joe Paterno would transform the program into one of the most prestigious football programs in all of college football. Paterno helped transition the Nittany Lions into national recognition and into the Big 10 Conference with some of the best teams in all of college football. Joe Paterno has been praised as one of the best college football coaches ever and has helped change the game into what it is today. He is said to be one of the most influential coaches in history. In 2011, scandal hit the Penn State program with the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal. Paterno saw a lot of criticism and backlash for the scandal which resulted in his firing. Wins from Paterno’s career were also taken away due to the scandal. On January 16, 2015, the NCAA restored all of Joe Paterno’s wins that he had earned until 2011 which made him the winningest coach in college football history. Despite the harsh criticism, Joe Paterno will go down as the greatest coach to ever coach at Penn State and one of the greatest to ever coach the game. Joe Paterno finished his coaching career with Penn State with a 409-139, 2 National Championships (1982 and 1986), 5 Big 10 Conference Championships, 37 bowl game appearances, 24 bowl game victories, and winning multiple Coach of the Year awards. Paterno struggled with his health soon after he was let go by Penn State in 2011. In 2012, Paterno was hospitalized because of complications with his cancer treatment and tragically passed away on January 22, 2012. The man to replace Paterno would be current Houston Texans head coach Bill O’Brien. Coach O’Brien had come to Penn State after being the offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots. Due to the Sandusky scandal, Penn State faced many penalties which included a postseason ban and a loss of multiple scholarships. O’Brien went 8-4 in his first season which is much better than most expected. O’Brien and the Nittany Lions went 7-5 in his second season before O’Brien left Penn State to coach the Houston Texans. In 2014, current head coach James Franklin began his tenure as Penn State head coach. Franklin is the first African American head coach in the school’s history. Franklin currently has a 14-12 record at Penn State and has taken the team to two bowl games in the two seasons he’s been with the program. Franklin believes that he can bring Penn State back to the level that it was once at and will be able to shake up the Big 10 heading forward as his team improves each season.

Many of the best NFL and college football players have come through the historic Penn State Nittany Lions program. Penn State has had one Heisman Trophy winner in its history which was John Cappelletti in 1973. Penn State has popularly been referred to as “Linebacker U” for its rich history of great linebackers to come through the university but the great players don’t stop there for Penn State. Some of the best players to play for Penn State have been: Jack Ham, Franco Harris, Bruce Clark, Paul Posluszny, Tamba Hali, Allen Robinson, Sean Lee, NaVorro Bowman, Cameron Wake, Lenny Moore and many others. With the historic significance of the Penn State program, it will always attract great college football talent and the list of great players will only grow as the program continues forward.

In the tough Big 10 Conference, every game counts and Penn State knows it has a lot of tough competition. But head coach James Franklin believes that his team has what it takes to defeat the best and compete for that top spot in the college football rankings. 2016 could be a big year for the Penn State Nittany Lions program as they try to bring back the national spotlight to their program.
