Philadelphia Eagles Bio

The Philadelphia Eagles started a new era in 2013 when they hired Oregon head football coach Chip Kelly. Kelly is known as an offensive innovator for his style of play at Oregon in which he employed an offense that was predicated on a high-octane tempo. Kelly’s offensive scheme was to get off plays quickly before the defense could get set up. He wanted his teams to keep up this pace all game in attempt to tire the opposing defense. Many people were skeptical that Kelly’s style would transition to the NFL, but his first season turned out to be a success, as he led the Eagles to the postseason with a 10-6 record. Last year an identical 10-6 record was not good enough to get Philadelphia into the playoffs and despite Kelly’s solid record so far, the future of the Eagles is very much up in the air. Kelly seems to be dead-set on proving his offensive scheme will work no matter who is running it. Since taking over in 2013 Kelly has already traded most of the Eagle’s best players, especially on the offensive side of the ball. He traded the Eagles best wide receiver Desean Jackson, one of the best running backs in the league LeSean McCoy and also traded their successful and young quarterback Nick Foles for the injury prone quarterback Sam Bradford. He has since signed former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow and so far his offseason moves do not seem to have any rhyme or reason to them. Trading away all of these top players has Philadelphia fans questioning what Kelly’s big picture plans are and some skeptics believe he wants to prove that the genius is in his coaching and not so much to do with the players on the team. Whatever the plan in, Kelly must win games or his tenure in the NFL could be short lived. Kelly’s predecessor Andy Reid enjoyed a long and successful career in Philadelphia.

In 1999 the Eagles hired Andy Reid to be their new head coach. That year they drafted quarterback Donovan McNabb out of Syracuse University and the two would experience great success in Philadelphia together. In 2000, McNabb led the Eagles back to the playoffs which started a string of playoff appearances in the years to come. The next season the Eagles advanced through the first two rounds and into the NFC championship game. They lost to the Saint Louis Rams but that was just their first taste of NFC championship game action. McNabb made it back to the NFC championship game the three following years but had similar results. After losing to the Rams, they lost to the eventual super bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers the following season, and once again lost in the NFC title game to the Carolina Panthers, marking their third straight failed attempt at reaching the super bowl. In 2004, they reached the NFC title game for the fourth straight year and finally got over the hump. They finally made their ultimate goal of reaching the super bowl come true, but once again they would go home without the trophy. In the super bowl the Eagles matched up with Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. They fought hard and were tied going into the fourth quarter, where the Patriots eventually pulled away. That string of four years was one of the best ever in the NFL but unfortunately for the Eagles they were never able to obtain the super bowl championship. It is a hole in McNabb’s legacy where critics will say he was never able to win the big game. Since 2004, Philadelphia has not been able to make it back to the super bowl, and after that season the window for Eagles and McNabb seemed to close. They failed to reach the playoffs in 2005 and although they had one more shot in the 2008 NFC championship game, once again they came up short. Andy Reid and the Eagles moved on from Donovan McNabb and signed veteran quarterback Michael Vick in 2009. With Vick the Eagles would once again make the playoffs but lost in the first round. Overall, Andy Reid was very successful in Philadelphia, despite never winning the super bowl. Reid became one of just five coaches in NFL history to win over 100 games with the same team in a ten year span. Reid has since moved on and is currently the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Andy Reid’s tenure with the Philadelphia Eagles was really a microcosm of the Philadelphia franchise a whole. In their history, the Eagles have reached the playoffs 25 times, without ever winning a super bowl. They have claimed 13 division championships along with 11 conference championships. They are a franchise that always been very good but never great enough to make it past the last obstacle. Although they have never won a super bowl, three Eagles teams won the NFL championship prior to the AFL-NFL merger. Chuck Bednarik was the leader of the 1960 championship team that captured the Eagles third and final NFL title. Bednarik is most known for being the last great two-way player in the NFL, back in the era when many players played both offense and defense. He is one of nine former Eagle’s players to have their jersey number retired by the franchise. Despite never winning a super bowl the Philadelphia’s fan base has never quit rooting for their team. One of the things the Eagles franchise is most known for, is having some of the most passionate fans in the NFL. The Eagles stadium is called Lincoln Financial Field and that stadium has been sold out for every home game since 1999. Surveys over the years have shown that the Eagles fan base is the most widely respected fans around the NFL. NFL players across the league even voted their fans as the most intimidating fans to play in front of in a survey taken by Sports Illustrated. Their future may be up in the air, but one thing we know for sure is if you go to a game at Lincoln Financial Field, the place is sure to be rocking.
