What makes US Airways Center special?

US Airways Center is a one million square foot arena located in downtown Phoenix, Arizona that is home to not just the Phoenix Suns, but also the Phoenix Mercury of the WNBA. US Airways Center was used for ice hockey in the past, but the sightlines were poor and around 2,000 seats had rather obstructed views of the ice, prompting the previous NHL tenants, Phoenix Coyotes, to move to their own ice hockey specific arena. The US Airways Center was recently renovated to include a 16,000 square foot air-conditioned glass-enclosed atrium as an entertainment district for people waiting in line for tickets or simply waiting before events begin.

Phoenix Suns Overview

Phoenix Suns Franchise History

It was all the way back in 1968 that the Phoenix Suns started their quest towards world basketball domination. As you would expect from a young basketball franchise, the Suns did not fare all that beautifully in their first campaign on the hardwood. Yes, only 16 wins were to be had for Phoenix during its first year on the job, but circumstances would quickly improve as the Suns earned a playoff spot the following year. That would be the squad's only playoff appearance until 1976, but the wait would be well worth it for this Phoenix franchise.

The Suns were able to make a dramatic run all the way to the NBA Finals that year, but the Celtics proved to be too much for these still somewhat young Suns to handle. Boston took care of Phoenix in six games, but at least the Suns were happy to be on the right track and finding themselves as championship contenders.

But it would take a while for Phoenix's basketball greats to find that same type of success again. Disappointing finishes in 1979 and 1984 saw the Suns exit in the Conference Finals thanks to the SuperSonics and Lakers, which obviously had Phoenix supporters wondering what might have been if only a few bounces went their way during those highly-contested series. And then after a three-year absence from the post-season in the late 80s, Suns fans were even more frustrated at what was to come for the franchise.

Luckily, the Suns would get their act together and try to make another championship push. After being ousted in the Conference Finals yet again in 1989 and 1990, Phoenix was not gonna take it anymore and bulldozed their way into the 1993 NBA Finals largely behind the ridiculously high level of play from stud forward Charles Barkley. Of course, the fiery competition for the Suns would be fierce, as Michael Jordan and company were more than prepared for the intimidating challenge. The Bulls sent the Suns packing in six games, but at least the Phoenix faithful had regained its confidence in the organization.

However, the Suns have yet to follow up that 1993 campaign with another Finals push. The Suns squad was able to orchestrate more Conference Finals appearances, but at this point, Phoenix has to be looking for championship trophies. And at least at the moment, the Suns just aren't finding themselves in that prestigious mix.

Phoenix Suns Marquee Players

There's no doubting the fact that Barkley is the most well-known Suns star to ever step onto the hardwood, but there's obviously been plenty of other true talents to throw on a Phoenix uniform over the years.

Chuck had plenty of help from his supremely talented supporting cast during his time with the club, with players like floor general Kevin Johnson, sharpshooter Dan Majerle, and feisty forward Tom Chambers being major contributors for the franchise.

And there was the point guard duo of Jason Kidd and Steve Nash that found ways to thrill the fans with their incredible skills displays when they were running the show for the Suns. Both court maestros were given a spot on the organization's All-Century team by the rowdy Phoenix fans, so that's definitely an hour for those two leading legends to be proud of.

Phoenix Suns Conference and NBA Titles

Yes, even with numerous Conference Finals appearances to their credit, the Suns are still in search of that elusive world championship that doesn't seem to be anywhere in sight. Phoenix has had its chances to capitalize over the years, but Suns supporters will tell you that it just hasn't been in the cards for this seemingly unlucky squad.

The Suns were able to capture conference crowns in 1976 and 1993, but with several other shots at winning more trophies, it's certainly an underwhelming number for Phoenix fans to think about when they look at the overall NBA picture.

Although world titles and conference crowns haven't been simple to come by for this Phoenix squad, the Suns do indeed have six divisional trophies that they can claim.

Phoenix Suns Venue Information

Talking Stick Resort Arena may be one of the more unique names in the professional sports arena landscape, but the Suns fans give the place a raucous atmosphere that helps their club gain a nice advantage over their hooping competition.

Most old school Phoenix basketball supporters know this place as the America West Arena, as that name saw most of the Suns' success overall until it transitioned into the US Airways Center in 2006, and is now holding the Talking Sticks Resort Arena label.

While the venue at one time held over 19,000 fun Suns fans, it now reaches its maximum capacity at just over 18,000 supporters. There have also been plenty of excellent renovations over the years that give the Suns faithful a spectacular home experience when their favorite squad takes the court.

Phoenix Suns 2014-2015 Season Recap

It's been several years since the Suns were able to feel the thrill of playoff success. Well, actually, it's been several years since the Suns have even been in the playoffs period. There was without question a sense of optimism for this team to make its glorious return to the post-season.

Unfortunately for Phoenix fans in desperate need of a world championship, that didn't come close to changing with the Suns' most recent basketball campaign, as the club shot their way to a losing record after seemingly being so close after a 48-34 season the year before. It wasn't exactly what Suns fans expected after gaining a lot of momentum during that 2013-2014 campaign, but as this squad learned, nothing comes easy in the competitive Western Conference.

There is certainly still hope for the Suns moving forward, with the club trying to become a true championship contender for the first time in quite a while. However, with all the enormous amount of talent and challenges facing this Phoenix franchise in the NBA, it's going to take a ton of work for the Suns to get back to that point.
