Pittsburgh Steelers Bio

The Pittsburgh Steelers have a long established history of winning. Pittsburgh or “sixburgh” as many Steeler fans will call their team, has won six super bowls in their history, a mark that no other franchise in the National Football League can match. Their list of accomplishment’s is long, as Pittsburgh has won 8 conference championships, 21 division titles, and has made the playoffs 28 times, to go along with those six super bowl rings. It all started in 1933 when owner Art Rooney took the city of Pittsburgh’s baseball team name and gave his new football team the same name. The football team played as the Pittsburgh Pirates until 1940 when they changed their name to the Steelers. Art Rooney was the founder of the team in 1933 and amazingly the team is still owned by the Rooney family to this day. Art Rooney passed the team on to his son Dan Rooney, who has recently passed upon much of the ownership to his son, Art Rooney the second. Part of the beginnings of the Pittsburgh franchise came during World War II. During this time, the franchise had a limited number of players and they actually had to forge with other franchises and create combined teams, in order to be able to field a full roster. In 1943 and 1944 the Steelers merged with two separate franchises in order to keep their team alive. In 43’ it was the Philadelphia Eagles and the Pittsburgh Steelers who created a team known as the “steagles”. The next year they merged with the Chicago Cardinals, forming another co-team. After the war ended, Pittsburgh went back to having their own franchise.

Early on in their franchise, Pittsburgh did not experience much success. After being founded in 1933, it was not until 1947 that they reached the playoffs for the first time. Following that one playoff appearance, were many more losing seasons. They actually went for a span of 25 years before making it back into the playoffs. The Steelers franchise may be the most successful one ever, but the majority of their success all came within one decade. The hiring of coach Chuck Knoll in 1969, led to the most dominant time in Steelers history; the 1970’s. Knoll seemed to have a knack for spotting talent in the draft, and piece by piece, he began putting together an ultra-talented roster. Pittsburgh’s success during the 70’s was predicated off their defensive unit. Joe Greene, Ernie Holmes, Dwight White, and L.C. Greenwood formed what was known as the “steel curtain”. Those four defensive lineman headlined, what was widely considered one the best defenses ever. The front four combined with linebackers Jack Ham and Jack Lambert, made life hell for opposing running backs and quarterbacks. Along with the hellacious defense, coach Knoll also drafted the great offensive foursome of Terry Bradshaw, Franco Harris, Lynn Swann, and John Stallworth. Swann, Stallworth, Lambert, and center Mike Webster were all drafted in 1974, marking a draft class that featured four future hall of famers. That is a feat that has never been accomplished again. The great draft class of 1974 started what ended up to be a Pittsburgh Steelers dynasty. The Steelers dominated the second half of the 70’s. They won back to back super bowls in 1974 and 1975 and went on to win four super bowls in six seasons, after winning consecutive super bowls again in 1978 and 1979. Nine players from those super bowl winning teams went on to be hall of famers by the end of their careers. Head coach Chuck Knoll and the owner Art Rooney were also inducted into the hall of fame. During that span they also acquired many accolades, including quarterback Terry Bradshaw taking home the most valuable player trophy in the 1978 season. Joe Green, Mel Blount, and Jack Lambert all won the defensive player of the year award during the 70’s, which goes to show just how good of a defense they had. Their historical run ended in the 1980’s when the team suffered through many injuries and later in the decade many of those great players began to retire.

A new regime started in 1992 when Chuck Knoll stepped down to retire, and a Pittsburgh native Bill Cowher took over the reins. Cowher’s career as the Steelers coach went on to be almost as successful as Chuck Knoll’s, minus the four super bowls. Cowher led the Steelers to the playoffs in his first six seasons, and ten of the fifteen seasons he coached overall. Through all the playoff success, came only one super bowl. Thirteen years into his coaching career in Pittsburgh, Cowher finally led the Steelers to a super bowl victory, behind another great defense. Overall the Steelers made two super bowl appearances and three AFC title games, with one super bowl ring under Cowhers belt. In 2007 Cowher stepped down as the Pittsburgh coach and the Steelers hired Mike Tomlin, who is still their coach today. For Tomlin, adding to the Steelers success did not take long. In just his second season as head coach, Tomlin led the Steelers to an NFL record sixth super bowl. With that super bowl victory he became the youngest coach to ever win the super bowl, and just the second ever African-American to do so. In 2011 Pittsburgh made it back to the super bowl, this time losing 31-25 to the Green Bay Packers. Since that super bowl appearance the Pittsburgh Steelers have been looking to regain the franchises successful ways. An aging and uncharacteristically bad Steeler’s defense has led to a bit of a decline. The retirement of safety Troy Polamalu could be the turning point of a new and hopefully younger defensive unit. Pittsburgh still has their super bowl winning quarterback Ben Rothlisberger and a very talented receiver-running back combination in Antonio Brown and Leveon Bell. Brown led the NFL in receptions and yards last year, hauling in 129 receptions for 1,698 yards. Leveon Bell was second in the NFL in rushing yards in the same season. The skill players are there for the Steelers and if they can put together a new defense that resembles some of the years past, they will be right back in contention for more super bowls.
