Portland Trail Blazers

The Portland Trail Blazers franchise was originally founded back in 1970. They play at the Moda Center, which is located in Portland, Oregon. They have called the Moda Center home since 1995. In the 45 years since the franchise has been founded, they have secured 5 division titles, 3 conference championships, and 1 NBA championship that came in 1977. The championship in 1977 was just one year after the NBA-ABA merger. The team was led by Maurice Lucas and they won the title despite never being in the playoffs prior to the 77 season.

Aside from that year, the majority of the team’s success came during the 1990’s. The team was a legit NBA contender during the early 90’s, where they were led by Clyde Drexler. Drexler is arguably the best Blazer of all-time. He is one of just 10 players to ever have their jersey number retired by the franchise and one of just 6 players to reach the hall of fame. Drexler had help with the likes of Scottie Pippen occupying the other wing and big man Arvydas Sabonis controlling the paint down low. Clyde Drexler is the still the leader of many categories of the franchise including most points in Portland history, with over 18,000 career points. The Trail Blazers won the western conference and reached the NBA finals in 1990 and 1992, but they could never bring home the second championship in franchise history. They fell victim to the great era of the 90s which featured the great Michael Jordan, along with many other all-time great players. Drexler is on the long list of great players who could not capture a title during this era.

In the 2014-15 season the Portland Trail Blazers had a great year that ended with a disappointing first round loss in the playoffs to the Memphis Grizzlies. The early exit was especially disappointing since Portland had advanced to the second round of the playoffs the previous year. Although the recent season was a minor setback, overall the franchise is moving in a positive direction.

In 2006 the franchise began to turn things around when they drafted LaMarcus Aldridge and Brandon Roy. With these two key picks, the team had a big-man and a guard that would be the building blocks of the future. Roy validated the team’s decision to draft him when he became the rookie of the year.

With the number one pick in the 2007 draft, they selected a center out of Ohio State named Greg Oden. Oden was a legit 7 foot center and gave the team the third piece to the puzzle. Unfortunately, Oden suffered a knee injury prior to his rookie season and never stepped foot onto the court. Never the less, the Blazers improved by posting a .500 record. The following season Oden returned, Roy and Aldridge continued to shine, and the Blazers took a significant step forward. During the 2008 season they posted a 54-28 record and clinched a playoff berth. Unfortunately, they were upset in the first round, making their playoff experience short lived. For the next few seasons, they made the playoffs but met a similar type of fate.

In the 2010-2011 season, injuries started to plague the Trail Blazers. Greg Oden had a knee injury, which was already the third one of his young career. Brandon Roy was experiencing pain in both of his knees and eventually needed surgery on both. These injuries marked the beginning of change for Portland. LaMarcus Aldridge was emerging as a star in the NBA, but prior hope of having a big three of Aldridge, Roy, and Oden was shot down due to these career changing knee injuries. Neither Roy nor Oden could ever get past their knee injuries and their promising careers were cut short. This left Portland with no choice but to rebuild the team around Aldridge.

It was not long before Portland would find another potential star to put next to Aldridge. They had the sixth pick in the 2012 draft and took a chance on a guard out of Weber State named Damian Lillard. Lillard was largely unknown due to attending such a small school, but his talent showed early on. With Lillard and Aldridge providing an all-star caliber duo, and a few key role players such as Wesley Matthews and Nicolas Batum, the Blazers would get back to the playoffs. It was Lillard who hit the series clinching shot against the Houston Rockets in 2014 that would propel the Blazers into the second round of the playoffs.

As a franchise, they are on the hunt to capture the second championship in franchise history. Keeping LaMarcus Aldridge in the upcoming offseason will be a major key to that, as he is in line to have a long list of suitors in free agency. The rumors are already swirling of potential destinations and if he does decide to leave, Portland will be rebuilding all over again. A move they have seen far too often since the turn of the century.

Moving forward the Blazers must continue to build around Lillard and Aldridge. They are an annual playoff worthy team right now, but not necessarily a legit contender. The biggest challenge is being in the western conference with 8 or 9 really strong teams. Wesley Matthews going down with an Achilles injury was a big loss for Portland this year. With him healthy and Nicolas Batum producing they are just a few pieces short of being a contender. The main roster moves they need to make are acquiring a legitimate big man down low to play with Aldridge who is more of a stretch four man. They also need to bolster their bench, which gave them little to no production during the 2015 season.
