Pusha T Bio

Pusha T is one of the hardest-working rappers in show business. Since the early 90s, he’s been a constant presence in the hip-hop community, continually innovating and influencing other rappers all over the industry. Pusha T rose to fame as one half of the influential hip-hop duo Clipse, which earned high critical praise and put Pusha T on the map in the hip-hop industry. The talented rapper has since embarked on a successful career as a solo performer. For more than 20 years now, Pusha T has been shaping hip-hop and selling Pusha T tickets all over the country – and he’s showing no signs of slowing down.

Pusha T was born Terrence Thornton in the Bronx, New York, on May 13, 1977. It was a fitting birthplace: hip-hop itself was born in the Bronx, and Pusha T was destined to make his mark on the genre. But while Pusha T and hip-hop were born in the same place, they were raised in different cities – when Pusha T was very young, his family relocated to Norfolk, Virginia.

The young Terrence Thornton grew up in Norfolk with his brother Gene Thornton. The two brothers fell in love with hip-hop and soon started rapping. Both brothers had a talent for making music, and they soon banded together to form a hip-hop duo. They called their group Jarvis, but would later change the name to Clipse. The brothers went by the stage names No Malice and Pusha T. It was 1992, and the groundwork for Pusha T’s long career was already being laid. Pusha T’s solo career was still many years away, but he was about to become one of the hip-hop genre’s most respected talents.

After a few years of hard work, the two members of Clipse got their big break. Producer Pharrell Williams noticed the group’s talent and helped them secure a record deal with Elektra Records in 1996. Clipse got a big assist from Pharrell’s production team, The Neptunes. The Neptunes worked with the brothers on their debut record, But that record, Exclusive Audio Footage, never got the support of Elextra Records – Clipse’s first single flopped, and Elektra released the group from their contract. It was a major setback, but it would not derail Pusha T’s career.

It didn’t take long for Pusha T and his brother to hit the ground running. Clipse soon caught on again with Arista Records, where they signed to Pharrell Williams’ imprint. By 2001, Clipse had signed a new record deal and were getting back to work on new material. Soon the rap duo had its first record, Lord Willin’ (2002). Finally, Clipse got the promotion they deserved. And when fans heard the record, it sold: the album went gold, making the first real commercial success of Pusha T’s career.

Clipse helped draw attention to Pusha T’s talents, but he didn’t limit his work to the group. Pusha T was frequently featured on other artist’s tracks, and he even founded a second hip-hop group, the Re-Up Gang, in 2004. The Re-Up Gang featured both members of Clipse, plus rappers Ab-Liva and Sandman. The group was formed while Clipse was on hiatus between their first two albums. Pusha T was becoming a constant presence in hip-hop, though he still wasn’t known as a solo artist. Before that would happen, he’d make two more albums as a part of Clipse.

Clipse returned from their hiatus and recorded second album, Hell Hath No Fury (2006). The sophomore effort reached number two on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart while drawing rave reviews from critics. Three years later, Til the Casket Drops (2009) repeated its predecessor’s critical success and cracked the Billboard 200 albums chart en route to further commercial success.

But while Clipse had earned high praise from critics and fans, both brothers longed to try solo work. Clipse went on hiatus again after Til the Casket Drops came out in 2009, and both No Malice and Pusha T embarked on solo careers.

In 2010, Pusha T inked a new solo deal with GOOD Music, the record company that Kanye West had founded in 2004. The deal connected Pusha T with some of the biggest artists in hip-hop, and his featured work on albums like Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy helped draw more attention to his work.

Though Pusha T had previously worked as a featured artist on other rappers’ albums, he’d never before embarked on a true solo career. Now, for the first time, fans would be able to buy Pusha T tickets and Pusha T albums instead of Clipse tickets and Clipse albums. It was a huge moment in Pusha T’s career – but also a risky one. Could Pusha T repeat the commercial and critical success that he’d had as a member of Clipse, or would his solo career become a footnote to the legacy of the hip-hop duo he’d spent most of his career with?

It didn’t take long for Pusha T to prove that his solo career would be every bit as important as his work with Clipse. After releasing a mixtape and an EP in 2011, Pusha T released My Name Is My Name (2013), which garnered the rapper further critical acclaim. Pusha T’s first solo album was released more than 20 years after his career began, but it was worth the long wait. The album reached number four on the Billboard 200 albums chart, its success fueled by rave reviews and appearances by hip-hop stars like Kendrick Lamar and Big Sean.

Pusha T’s second solo effort dropped in 2015. King Push – Darkest Before Dawn: The Prelude won the rapper still more praise. Pusha T had established himself as one of hip-hop’s most consistently excellent artists.

Today, Pusha T is one of the most respected artists in the hip-hop world. His work has been revered in hip-hop circles since he was a rising star with Clipse, and the success of his solo career only proves that he’s here to stay. Pusha T tickets and record albums are hot sellers, and they will likely stay that way for a long time to come.
