Rascal Flatts Details

Rascal Flatts Bio

Rascal Flatts is one of country music’s most popular acts. The country trio’s music’s blend of classic country influences with modern pop sensibilities has helped them climb both the country and pop charts, and their consistent output has kept them popular for more than 15 years. Each of Rascal Flatts’ first seven albums was certified at least platinum, and fans still rush to get their hands on Rascal Flatts tickets.

Of course, the three members of Rascal Flatts weren’t always part of one of the most dominant forces in the music industry. The massively popular band has its roots in the friendship of three musicians who simply wanted to get together and make music.

The three members of Rascal Flatts – Gary LeVox, Jay DeMarcus, and Joe Don Rooney – each came to Nashville to try to make it in country music. By the time Rascal Flatts was founded, each of its members had already tasted some success. DeMarcus had already made a couple of records as a member of East to West, a country music duo that he’d founded in college. He also had experience as a producer. LeVox came to Nashville in 1997, at DeMarcus’ request: the two are second cousins, and DeMarcus saw an opportunity for LeVox to work as a backing vocalist on a record he was producing for Michael English. Eventually, both DeMarcus and LeVox became a part of English’s backing band.

Joe Don Rooney came into the picture when DeMarcus joined Chely Wright’s backing band (DeMarcus was in both Wright’s and English’s bands at the same time). Rooney was the guitarist in the band, and he and DeMarcus had an instant musical connection. From the start, all three musicians got along – so when LeVox and DeMarcus found themselves without a guitarist for a gig in Nashville one night, they naturally called up Rooney. Rooney made it to the gig, and a new band was born. In the years since, the friendship at the foundation of Rascal Flatts has kept the band together through massive changes in their fortunes.

After getting together for that one gig, the three members of Rascal Flatts decided to try to make it big as a trio. The group’s talent and synergy were obvious right from the start, and they were signed shortly after their founding. The band inked a deal with Lyric Street, a Disney Music Group imprint, in 1999.

It didn’t take long for the newly signed group to make an impression on the music world. The band’s very first single, “Prayin’ for Daylight,” shot up the Billboard country music charts and landed at number three. That strong performance helped to fuel the success of their debut album, the self-titled Rascal Flatts (2000). Rascal Flatts reached the second spot on the country albums charts and made it all the way to number 43 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. The debut album showed the band’s promise: the pop elements in their songs hinted at the band’s future as a massive crossover success.

The band built on their success with their sophomore effort, Melt (2002). Like their first record, their second album featured upbeat pop influences that led to significant crossover success for the group. In addition to claiming the top spot on the country music charts, Melt reached number five on the Billboard 200 albums chart.

With their third album, Feels Like Today (2004), the band reached a whole new level of stardom. The album’s second single, a cover of “Bless the Broken Road,” became their longest-lasting number one hit ever, and all of the album’s singles also cracked the Billboard Hot 100. Feels Like Today has since been certified 5x platinum by the RIAA.

2006 was another huge year for the band. Like its predecessor, Me and My Gang (2006) went 5x platinum, and the band scored a huge crossover hit with “What Hurts the Most,” which topped the country charts and reached number six on the Hot 100. Later in 2006, the band released a song for the soundtrack to Disney’s Cars. “Life is a Highway” was another massive hit, and it reached number seven on the Billboard Hot 100. More than ever, Rascal Flatts was gaining crossover pop success.

Rascal Flatts had reached a new high-water mark in their success. Rascal Flatts tickets and albums were selling quickly in the United States, Canada, and beyond – and not just in traditional country hotbeds like Nashville. The group didn’t just bask in their success, though. They quickly headed back to the studio to record another album.

Still Feels Good (2007) was another multi-platinum hit. The band followed it with a greatest hits album, but they were far from done: they made sure to call the compilation Greatest Hits Volume 1, to leave room for future hits. Then they went back to the studio and delivered on that promise, making brand new hits.

The band’s next album, the aptly named Unstoppable (2009), debuted atop the Billboard 200. It was the fourth time in a row a Rascal Flatts album had managed that feat. And for the first time, a Rascal Flatts album was succeeding without the help of a major label: after Lyric Street went belly-up, the band had inked a new deal with the independent record company Big Machine.

For the next few years, the band released a record every year. After Unstoppable came Nothing Like This (2010), a live album called The Best of Rascal Flatts Live (2011), and their eighth studio album, Changed (2012). In 2014, Rascal Flatts released another album called Rewind. Just like its predecessors, Rewind earned critical praise and commercial success.

Today, Rascal Flatts tickets and albums remain among the industry’s best sellers. The band’s consistent production and relentless touring have earned them fans and kept them relevant for the better part of two decades. Rascal Flatt’s blend of country and pop sensibilities made its members into superstars, but the three men who founded the band – all of whom remain in it today – still take obvious joy in making music together. For Rascal Flatts, everything and nothing has changed.
