San Diego Chargers Overview

The San Diego Chargers franchise was founded in 1959. They were members of the American Football League and were located in Los Angeles, California. The franchise spent just one season in LA, before moving to San Diego, where they continue to reside. The team played in the AFL for ten seasons before joining the NFL in 1970. As an AFL member the Chargers found early success. They reached the AFL championship game four times in that ten year span, winning it all in 1963. They have not been able to reach the pinnacle since joining the NFL, despite making the playoffs many times. 1963 is the Chargers only championship and they have just one conference championship back in 1994. Along with the lone conference championship the Chargers have 15 division titles and have reached the playoffs 18 times in their history. The Chargers play in the West division of the AFC or the American Football Conference. They remain as the only team located in southern California and there are rumors swirling, stating that they may be moving back to where it all started, Los Angeles, California within the next few seasons. If these rumors come true, there could be a new leader of the franchise as quarterback Philip Rivers is believed to not be on board with this move. Rivers was traded to the Chargers during the 2004 draft. The Chargers swapped quarterbacks with the New York Giants who received Peyton Manning’s brother Eli. Eli has went on to win two super bowls in his time with the Giants, while Rivers has had an up and down career in San Diego. Rivers had instant success when he took over the reins for Drew Brees back in 2006. He led the Chargers to a 14-2 record in his first full season as a starter and also led the franchise to its first playoff victory since 1994, the following season. Rivers has taken the Chargers to the playoffs in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2013, with a few disappointing seasons in between. Rivers has been one of the best quarterbacks in the league in the past ten years but has also struggled at times throwing too many interceptions. He is a fiery competitor that the San Diego fan base loves.

In the 2014 season the Chargers went 9-7 and failed to make the playoffs. They have missed the playoffs four out of the last five seasons with the lone playoff season also having a 9-7 record. They used their first round pick in this year’s draft to take a running back named Melvin Gordon out of Wisconsin. Gordon was one of two running backs taken in the first round of the draft, which had not happened in the past few drafts. The Chargers hope Gordon can be their most productive back since Charger great LaDainian Tomlinson left the franchise prior to the 2010 season. The Chargers drafted Tomlinson back in 2001 and paired him with quarterback Philip Rivers a few years later. Tomlinson was the fifth overall pick and became one of the best running backs of all-time. He won the NFL rushing title two consecutive years in 2006 and 2007 and piled up many rushing yards in a Chargers uniform. In 2006 he also set the NFL record with 28 rushing touchdowns. In fact, Tomlinson had double digit rushing touchdowns each and every year with the Chargers before he took a swift decline in his last two seasons in the NFL, which he played for the New York Jets. The Chargers have failed to replace Tomlinson’s production over the last five years and now they hope Gordon is the answer. Tomlinson has been the best running back in the Chargers franchise but Philip River has some competition at the quarterback position. The San Diego franchise has had two quarterbacks reach the hall of fame and just 12 players ever. Legend Johnny Unitas was a San Diego charger, but only for one year. The other quarterback to reach the hall was Dan Fouts. Fouts had a much longer tenure with the Chargers as he was at the helm from 1973 until 1987. Fouts helped the Chargers end a 14 year playoff drought in 1979, but they would go on to lose in the divisional round. The next year they would advance to the conference championship game and lost to the eventual champions. Fouts would end up leading the Charges to two more playoff appearances in his career, marking four playoff appearances and three division titles. Fouts was beloved by the San Diego franchise and became just one of three players to have their jersey number retired. The other two were wide receiver Lance Alworth who played eight seasons in San Diego and Junior Seau who was the captain of the Charger defense for twelve seasons. Seau is probably the most notable defensive player in San Diego history. Seau was selected to twelve pro-bowls in his career and made the NFL all-pro team ten times. He became a member of the pro football hall of fame this year. Unfortunately, Junior Seau is also widely known for off the field issues as well. Seau was known to suffer from chronic brain issues that were due to playing football and in 2012 the issues became too much for Junior, who took his own life at the age of 43. It was a tragic day for all of the NFL and especially the San Diego Chargers.

Going forward, the San Diego Chargers will be searching for their first ever NFL super-bowl victory. Philip Rivers is getting up in age and probably only has a few quality seasons left in him. Melvin Gordon being productive in the running game would be a great help. The Chargers could also use more help on the perimeter to go along with wide receiver Kennan Allen. Realistically the Chargers have the potential to be a playoff team, but they may not actually be a title contender. They will most likely make a few more runs with Rivers at quarterback and then within the next 2-3 years there could be a lot of changes in San Diego, or in Los Angeles if the rumors prove to be true.
