Shania Twain Bio

Canadian singer Shania Twain isn’t just one of the best-loved country music stars in the world today: she’s one of the most important artists in recorded music history. In addition to being the best-selling female artist in the history of country music, Twain is one of the best-selling artists in music history – in any genre. Over the past quarter-century, Twain has risen to superstardom and dominated country and pop music charts throughout. Today, she remains one of the world’s pre-eminent pop stars, and fans rush to buy Shania Twain tickets and albums all over the globe.

But Shania Twain wasn’t born into superstardom – she had to work for it. Twain owes her massive success to her talent, her work ethic, and her persistence. She’s earned her unparalleled success with a series of hit albums and a relentless touring schedule, and she’s dealt with plenty of adversity along the way. To get where she is today, Shania Twain had to catch the attention of producers and studios, overcome personal tragedy, and mount a comeback after a prolonged hiatus.

Shania Twain was born Eilleen Regina Edwards on August 28, 1965 in Windsor, Ontario. When young Eilleen was just two years old, her parents split up. Her mother moved to Timmins, Ontario with her three daughters and married Jerry Twain, who legally adopted Eilleen and her sisters. Eilleen Regina Edwards became Eilleen Regina Twain. She also gained two brothers, one by birth and one by adoption.

Life wasn’t easy for the new family. Twain’s parents didn’t have much, and their relationship was troubled and sometimes even violent. Twain even spent some time in a homeless shelter. She began struggling with depression.

To help out her struggling family, Twain began to sing in bars to earn some money. She was just eight years old. The venues were depressing, but Twain took refuge in the music. By 10, Twain was writing her own material and had started to draw some attention from the entertainment business.

At just 13 years old, Twain got her first TV exposure. She appeared on CBC’s The Tommy Hunter Show. She continued to perform throughout her high school years, primarily as the singer for a band that covered pop hits. After graduating, she left the dissolving pop band and toured with a cover band. Twain, still performing as Eilleen Twain, began to attract more attention from music publications. Toronto DJ Stan Campbell took particular interest, and approached Twain about recording demos in Nashville. The two headed south to the United States to begin Twain’s career.

Twain struggled financially in Nashville, but soon found support from fellow Canadian singer Mary Bailey. Bailey acquired Twain’s contract and invited Twain to stay with her in Ontario while honing her craft. Twain formed another band and began touring Ontario again. It was starting to look like her career was just going in circles – but things would soon change.

Bailey put Twain into contact with John Kim Bell, a composer who was instrumental in convincing Twain to pursue a career in country music instead of pop. After a performance at a fundraiser run by Bell, Twain’s career seemed well on its way.

But then tragedy struck. Twain’s mother and stepfather died in a car accident in 1987, and Twain headed back to Timmins to care for her siblings. She performed at a nearby resort, but had to put her recording career on hold. It was a personal tragedy and a serious setback in a promising career.

After Twain’s siblings were old enough to care for themselves, Twain began to focus on her career again. A demo tape helped her get the attention of Mercury Nashville Records, and she signed her first major label deal. Eileen changed her name to Shania and began to record.

Twain’s first album, the self-titled Shania Twain (1993) was only a modest commercial success but was an important step in establishing her as an artist in the United States. It would be Twain’s next two albums that would establish her as a true superstar.

Twain’s sophomore effort, The Woman in Me (1995), was her first hit album. The album sold four million copies in its first year, fueled in part by the success of her first singles. That established Twain in the country genre and set the stage for Twain’s third album, which launched her into unprecedented levels of crossover stardom.

That third album was Come on Over (1997), and it was a massive hit. Come on Over went platinum or multi-platinum in more than 15 different countries, and it has sold a breathtaking 17,590,000 copies in the United States to date. It was certified double-diamond by the RIAA. No 1990s album – by any artist in any genre – sold more copies than Come on Over did.

Come on Over made Shania Twain one of the world’s biggest stars. Her pop- and rock-tinged country style gave her a huge crossover audience, and fans rushed to get their hands on Shania Twain tickets.

The pressure was on Twain to produce another hit album, and she delivered with Up! (2002). Up! went platinum 11 times over in the United States, and continued Twain’s incredible run of mainstream success.

But Twain’s rapid rise to stardom and relentless touring had taken their toll. As her marriage fell apart, Twain chose to retreat from the spotlight. She released only occasional singles over the next few years, and then disappeared from the music business entirely for six years.

Thankfully for fans, Twain’s hiatus didn’t last forever. In 2011, she returned to music by headlining a recurring show in Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. After two years there, she returned to touring in earnest in 2015, playing venues around the United States in Canada in her Rock This Country Tour. Twain has also hinted at future full-length albums.

Today, Twain has reclaimed her place as one of the world’s biggest country and pop stars. Her fans haven’t missed a step: they’re as ready to snap up Shania Twain tickets and albums today as they were in her late 1990s heyday. Twain hasn’t lost her touch, either – her powerful voice and style are as unmistakable today as they’ve always been.
