Shinedown BioShinedown’s uncompromising brand of alternative hard rock has made them a favorite of rock music fans all around the world. Since their debut in the early 2000s, the band has sold more than 6 million records. Shinedown tickets and Shinedown albums are hot sellers in every corner of the United States and beyond, and thanks to the talent and persistence of core members Brent Smith and Barry Kerch, the band is still going strong today.
But Shinedown’s journey hasn’t been easy. The band has encountered plenty of challenges along the way. They owe their very existence to pressure on the career of frontman Brent Smith, and things haven’t gotten much easier since then: since forming, the band has dealt with huge changes in their commercial and critical fortunes and even significant changes to their lineup. Through it all, though, one thing has remained constant: Shinedown’s dedication to making great rock music for their legions of fans.
The story of Shinedown starts with Brent Smith, the frontman and lead singer of the rock group. Smith emerged from Knoxville, Tennessee as the frontman of a group called Blind Thought. Blind Thought inked a deal with Atlantic Records and even recorded some tracks, but they were soon dropped from the label. It was a huge blow to Smith, but he did catch one break: of all of the members of Blind Thought, only Smith had his contract retained by Atlantic Records. Smith was given a developmental contract, and the label gave him space to rebuild. Determined to make it in rock and roll, Smith headed out to recruit members for a new band.
Smith didn’t give up, and he soon found the musicians he needed. He teamed up with drummer Barry Kerch, who still works with Smith as a part of Shinedown to this day. Bassist Brad Stewart and guitarist Jasin Todd also signed on to the project. The new band was based in Jacksonville, Florida. They called themselves Shinedown, and they were destined for stardom.
With his newly formed band, Smith returned to Atlantic Records to try again to break into the rock scene. The label again financed recording time for a band led by Smith – and the pressure was on. This time, Smith’s group was successful. The new band’s very first album, Leave a Whisper (2003) was certified gold and was well received by critics.
The album’s success was fueled in part by the strong commercial performance of the record’s first two singles, “Fly from the Inside” and “45.” Smith and his band had earned their shot with Atlantic Records, and now they’d earned it with their audience, too. They embarked on their first major tour, giving fans around the United States their first chance to get their hands on Shinedown tickets. Superstardom was still a few years away, but Shinedown had carved out a niche in the music world for their brand of hard rock.
The success of Leave a Whisper put the pressure on Shinedown’s second album, but their sophomore effort delivered. Us and Them (2005), like Leave a Whisper before it, was certified gold. Shinedown had established themselves as a consistent threat in the hard rock world. With two strong albums under their belt, the band had made it clear that they were here to stay.
Shinedown had made a mark on rock with their first two albums, but it would be their third album that would elevate them to the next level of stardom. Unfortunately, they would first have to deal with turmoil inside the group. Guitarist Jasin Todd departed the group, as did bassist Brad Stewart. They were replaced by Nick Perri (guitar), Eric Bass (bass), and Zach Myers (guitar). Perri would later leave the group in 2009, giving the band its current lineup of Smith, Kerch, Myers, and Bass.
The band’s lineup changes did not hold them back. Their third album, The Sound of Madness (2007), proved to be their most successful record yet. It went platinum, fueled by the success of the band’s biggest single yet, “Second Chance.” The Sound of Madness spent an impressive 120 weeks on the Billboard 200 albums chart. The massive success of The Sound of Madness led to the re-release of the band’s first two albums and raised the group to a new level of stardom. More than ever before, fans were lineup up for Shinedown tickets and buying up copies of Shinedown albums. It was a commercial high-water mark for the band.
The band’s success didn’t stifle their creative energy. Shinedown’s members made the surprise decision to go on an acoustic tour in 2010. Fans that bought Shinedown tickets that year were able to request songs and ask the band questions while hearing acoustic versions of the band’s famous hard rock songs.
The follow-up to The Sound of Madness arrived four years after the band’s breakout album dominated the charts. Amaryllis (2012) was a commercial and critical success. Though it didn’t attract the same level of mainstream attention as The Sound of Madness, it pleased the band’s die-hard fans and continued their impressive run with the critics.
Shinedown hasn’t slowed down in the 2010s. They followed 2012’s Amaryllis with another album in 2015. Threat to Survival (2015) is the band’s fifth studio album in a dozen years, and it features the same hard rock edge that characterized their earlier efforts. The band has also continued to tour, giving fans new and old alike more chances to get their hands on Shinedown tickets.
Today, Shinedown’s current lineup of Brent Smith, Barry Kerch, Zach Myers, and Eric Bass continues to challenge listeners while maintaining the hard rock style that made the group a favorite of rock fans all around the world. The band’s music has been described as everything from “alternative metal” to “post-grunge,” but to the band’s members themselves, simply “rock” will do: they’re simply making music they love and that their fans love. That’s good enough for the musicians of Shinedown, and the band’s legions of fans wouldn’t have it any other way.
