Sting Biography

While Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner hasn’t become a household name worldwide, Sting definitely has, due to his incredible talent and career spanning across almost four decades. Not only is he a talented singer but actor and producer as well. Sting has received 16 Grammy Awards, 3 Brit Awards, and 3 Academy Award nominations for his work and is expected to continue to produce great content. Noted for his unique mix of rock, jazz, classical, and world-beat sound, Sting is one of the most influential artists of our time.

At the young age of 10 Sting began teaching himself guitar and became obsessed. By 1977, after moving to London, he joined Stewart Copeland and Henry Padovani to form The Police. The group quickly gained traction from 1978-1983, producing 5 UK chart-topping albums, winning 6 Grammy awards, and 2 Brit awards for their unique punk, reggae, and rock inspired sound. Their final album, which produced their most popular single, “Every Breath You Take”, was released in 1983 and earned 5 Grammy nominations. Shortly thereafter the group broke up with the promise of reforming later.

After a brief stint with the group dubbed The Secret Police from 1981-1983, Sting released his first solo album in 1985. The album produced 4 hit singles and received 4 Grammy nominations, including Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, and Album of The Year. Throughout 1985, Sting performed at various charity events, including Band Aid’s “Do They Know It’s Christmastime?” event. He also made appearances on Miles Davis, Phil Collins, and Arcadia’s albums among other artists.

In 1987 Sting released his second album ...Nothing Like The Sun which earned 3 Grammy nominations, and Best British Album at the 1988 Brit Awards. That album, along with Police album Synchronicity ranked number 90 and 17, respectively, on Rolling Stone’s Top 100 Albums of the 80’s. In 1988, Sting released a spanish version of the album and began arrangements for a live album.

Between 1990 and 1997 Sting’s albums, The Soul Cages and Ten Summoner's Tales reached double and triple platinum status. He continued to collaborate with other artists and release singles for movies, including Disney’s Emperor’s New Groove. Although the music wasn’t used in the film, it was released on the soundtrack in 1998 and earned Sting a nomination for the Academy Awards Best Song.

Sting’s 1999 album Brand new Day won two Grammy awards and inspired a DVD and and livestream internet concert. The livestream was scheduled for September 11, 2001 but was postponed due to the terrorist attacks, the DVD was released in November and dedicated to those who lost their lives that day. Along with being an accomplished singer, Sting also appeared in many movies and films, earning a Golden Globe in 2002, and published his autobiography in 2004.

In February of 2007 Sting went back to his roots and opened for the Grammys with The Police, announcing their world tour set for later that year. After the tour Sting began working on his album If On A Winter’s Night… which met mixed reviews. In 2011 Sting was named in Time Magazine’s piece on the 100 most influential people in the world. During this time, Sting had also been working on a musical, The Last Ship which was inspired by his childhood at the shipyards of Britain. The show premiered in Chicago before moving to Broadway in 2014 and inspired his eleventh studio album of the same name.

Earlier this year, Sting announced his North American tour with Peter Gabriel and hosted the NBA All-Star 2016 halftime show. This is a tour you don’t want to miss, as Sting will showcase his incredible talent that shot him to fame back in the 60s that has kept him relevant since then. His classic hits and more recent numbers are unique and fun, engaging fans of all ages.
