Syracuse Orange Basketball Details

The Syracuse Orange basketball program is a very talent program that has been around since the early 1900’s and has had early success. The success of Syracuse has continued over the years and especially showed in the 2016 NCAA Tournament when the Syracuse Orange made it to the Final Four. Sadly, the Orange lost to the North Carolina Tar Heels. Head coach Jim Boeheim is one of the best in the business and always knows how to get the best out of his players. With the success of last season, the Syracuse Orange are a team to be feared in the 2016-2017 season.

The Syracuse Orange basketball had its start in the early 1900’s when the program began and grew very rapidly. It didn’t take long for them to be nationally recognized as a great college basketball team. Although they were not invited to the national tournament early on in their days, Syracuse was named National Champion by the Helms Athletic Foundation in 1918 and 1926. Their first national tournament appearance was in 1957. Syracuse continued to excel but wouldn’t really gain a lot of national attention until the 1970’s. Although Syracuse had been a consistently talented team, the 70’s is when Syracuse started to be nationally recognized as a great basketball program which featured appearances in the national tournament. In 1976, Syracuse hired current head coach Jim Boeheim.

Jim Boeheim was just an assistant for Syracuse before getting the head job in 1976. Since Boeheim has taken over the Syracuse program, he has had a great amount of success. In his time coaching, Syracuse has never had a losing season and has had national tournament appearances in each of his seasons where the were eligible. Boeheim has really transformed the program and is considered one of the best coaches in the game. The success that Syracuse shows since Boeheim has been with the program so long. Boeheim led Syracuse to a National Championship win in 2003. Other accomplishments that Syracuse has gotten under Boeheim include 5 Final Four appearances, 8 Big East titles, and an overall record of 989-347. Boeheim also won the Naismith Coach of the Year and AP Coach of the Year in 2010 and is a 4 time Big East Coach of the Year winner. Boeheim is also an assistant coach for the US Olympic Men’s Basketball Team. Boeheim has really made Syracuse an elite program and although they have had their years where they didn’t finish strong, Boeheim continually has Syracuse heading in the right direction with a shot at winning it all.

With the rich and impressive history behind the Syracuse Orange basketball program, it has seen a lot of great and talented players come through the program. Some of the best players to play for the Syracuse Orange Basketball program are: Carmelo Anthony, Sherman Douglas, Derrick Coleman, John Wallace, Lawrence Moten, Pearl Washington, Bill Smith, Etan Thomas, and many more. With this legendary program and coach still finding success, Syracuse won’t have any problems when getting talented players to come play for the Orange.

Even though most would consider a Final Four appearance a good year, Syracuse isn’t satisfied with not winning it all. Syracuse made its first Final Four appearance since 2013 as they couldn’t seem to find answers leading up to last years tournament. Syracuse will come out stronger than ever to get back to the Final Four and further that to win the National Championship come the 2016 season.
