Tampa Bay Lightning Bio

Tampa Bay Lightning Franchise History

The Tampa Bay Lightning have been skating gracefully on the ice since 1992 when the team entered the National Hockey League on a mission. The Bolts started things out in the Norris Division in their first year, and their play on the ice was less than ideal since the team only managed to pick up 23 wins overall.

However, things would start to get better temporarily when the Lightning glided into the 1996 Eastern Conference playoffs. Despite falling short against the Philadelphia Flyers, the franchise was able to get that first taste of the playoffs after a solid season in Tampa Bay. Unfortunately, it would take quite a bit longer before the Lightning would make their triumphant return, with the team failing to get into the playoffs the next six seasons.

Luckily, some much-needed hope came to the organization during the 2002-2003 season, as the Lightning topped the Southeast Division and made a nice little run to the Eastern Conference Semifinals. Sure, they were ousted rather handily by the New Jersey Devils once they got there, but it erased the sour taste of not making the playoffs for so many years.

But perhaps it also gave Tampa Bay a whole lot of confidence and momentum heading into the next season. That's because they did return to the playoffs the next year, and this time, they weren't playing around. After plenty of stellar performances throughout the post-season, the Lightning struck for their first-ever Stanley Cup Trophy after overwhelming the Calgary Flames in what was a fantastic seven game set of hockey.

After the world championship, the team would keep the train rolling with two straight playoff appearances before fizzling out for several years.

A tough Conference finals loss to the superb Boston Bruins in 2011 would be a hard pill to swallow for the Lightning, and since that point, they've only made it to the playoffs once, which unfortunately resulted in the Montreal Canadiens taking the brooms to them in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals.

Tampa Bay Lightning Marquee Players

Sure, the Lightning still haven't been around all that long in the NHL at this point in time, but that doesn't mean that they haven't been able to lure some excellent hockey players to the city of Tampa.

Martin St. Louis is undoubtedly at the top of that group given the fact that he's the franchise leader in total points. He also won close to a zillion trophies (well, maybe a few less than that) during his time with the club, which makes sense considering that he almost hit the thousand mark in terms of number of games played for the organization.

Speaking of that thousand mark, there is a man that did hit that, and that was Vincent Lecavlier who racked up a whopping 1,037 games with the club.

The Lightning also have two former players that have made their way into the prestigious Hall of Fame, with Denis Savard and Dino Ciccarelli being that impressive duo.

Other great talents such as Steven Stamkos and Brad Richards have made a major impact on the Tampa Bay organization as well throughout the years.

Tampa Bay Lightning Conference and Stanley Cup Titles

That memorable run through the 2004 Stanley Cup Playoffs still holds at the club's only world championship at this point, and in fact, is the only time that they've made it to the biggest series in all of hockey. But given the team's relatively short history, that is to be expected given the competition throughout the league.

As for Eastern Conference championships, well, they only have a single one of those, with that coming in the same year as the Stanley Cup success.

Tampa Bay does have two division titles to its credit, with one coming during the championship year and the other coming a year earlier.

Tampa Bay Lightning Venue Information

The Amalie Arena entertains hockey fans in Tampa when the Lightning take the ice for each home game, and it's an area that has been through more than a few name changes. It started with the fitting Ice Palace Arena label. Then it enjoyed a nice 10-year stint at the St. Pete Times Forum. And after a couple of years as the Tampa Bay Times Forum, it found its current name.

Its an arena that is conveniently located in sunny downtown Tampa and with a seating capacity of a little over 19,000, the arena can certainly pack a nice punch when it comes to providing the Lightning with a great home atmosphere.

The venue has hosted all kinds of awesome events over the years, including the 1999 edition of the NHL All-Star Game and the most recent Women's Final Four.

Tampa Bay Lightning 2014-2015 Season Recap

After a very disappointing finish to the 2014 season due to a sweep from the Canadiens, the Lightning returned on a mission to get some revenge in 2015.

They certainly did just that by setting a franchise record with an incredible total of 50 wins on the season, which earned them a second place finish in the Atlantic division in the process. In fact, Tampa finished with the same amount of wins as their nemesis Montreal, but unfortunately, the Canadiens were able to rack up two extra points and their 110 overall were enough to stop the Lightning from capturing another division crown.

With an impressive regular season in the bag, the Lightning were forced to turn their attention to the start of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Which team awaited them first? None other than the Detroit Red Wings, who gave Tampa a nice run for their money in a thrilling seven-game series, but it was the Lightning that came out on top.

And just like any typical Hollywood turn of events, there's no doubt that you can guess who their second round opponent will be? That's right, the pesky Canadiens.

It's safe to say that the Lightning will be looking to get their ultimate revenge and find their way back to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time in quite a while.
