TCU Horned Frogs Football Details

TCU is looking to build off their strong 2015 campaign where they only lost 2 games and finished ranked #7 in the nation. The Horned Frogs aren’t satisfied with their season even though it was a winning one because they have their eyes locked on the National Championship. This Big 12 team could be one to keep in mind when looking at the College Football Playoff picture.

The TCU Horned Frogs began their football program in 1896 and like most football programs, had their up and down years leading up to them gaining national attention. In the early 1920’s, TCU joined the Southwest Conference and really started to develop into a good program. In 1929, TCU got their first SWC title. In 1935, Dutch Meyer began his coaching tenure that lasted until 1952. Meyer brought a lot of success to TCU and really put them over the top and into the national spotlight. In his coaching career, Meyer won 2 National Championships (1935 and 1938), 4 Conference Championships (1935, 1938, 1944, and 1951), and 9 winning seasons. Before retiring with a 109-79 record in 1952. Assistant coach Abe Martin was promoted to head coach in 1953 and coached TCU until 1966. Martin had some success and had a decent final record of 74-64 at the end of his coaching career. Martin led TCU to 3 Conference Championships, 5 bowl games, 7 winning seasons before he retired in 1966. After the retirement of Martin, TCU saw a massive drop in production from 1967-1982. 3 different head coaches had tenure during that time period and all of them didn’t have very good final records, those 3 head coaches were Fred Taylor, Jim Pittman, and Billy Tohill. Jim Wacker took over as the head ball coach in 1983 and brought some of the spotlight back to TCU. Wacker struggled throughout his career but helped TCU have a winning season once again. Wacker left in 1991 to coach at the University of Minnesota. Former Heisman Trophy winner Pat Sullivan was hired in 1992 and coached at TCU until 1997. Sullivan struggled and had only one winning season at TCU.

After the resignation of Sullivan, TCU hired Dennis Franchione who had success at TCU in his short time there from 1998-2000. Each season at TCU, Franchione had 3 winning seasons, 3 bowl game appearances, 2 bowl game wins, and won 2 conference championships. Franchione finished with a 25-10 record at TCU before leaving to coach at Alabama in 2001. Current head coach Gary Patterson took over at TCU in 2001 and TCU hasn’t looked back since. Patterson has an overall record of 143-47 so far in his career and looks to improve on that in 2016. Patterson also has 13 bowl game appearances, 9 bowl game wins, 6 conference championships, 10 winning seasons, and 4 undefeated seasons with TCU. Patterson and the Horned Frogs are focused on the National Championship and all signs point to them having a great shot at playing for the College Football Playoffs.

TCU has seen a great amount of great players come through their program throughout their history. Some of the great talents that have played for TCU include: Ladainian Tomlinson, Trevone Boykin, Jim Swink, Aaron Schobel, Andy Dalton, Kenneth Davis, Jeremy Kerley, Daryl Washington and numerous other players that have made up the great players to have played for the Horned Frogs.

TCU has been one of the best college football teams the past few seasons and they don’t seem to be stopping anytime soon. Coach Patterson has the team believing they deserve to be the top team in the nation and in 2016, TCU will come out to get what they feel they deserve. This Big 12 team will be one to look out for come College Football Playoff time.
