Texas Longhorns Football Details

Football is life in Texas. Football is seen anywhere and everywhere you go in Texas and is a huge staple of the entire state. Texas features some of the best football programs in the country ranging from the youth leagues to high school to college to NFL franchises. The Texas Longhorns have always been a huge presence throughout the state of Texas and looks to remain that way for years to come. The University of Texas Longhorns Football program has a very long and rich history of football that has seen its days of success. Although the Longhorns have struggled over the past few seasons, there remains hope that the Longhorns will become the football powerhouse they once were in the NCAA.

The first Texas Longhorns football team was established in 1893 where they hired their first head coach RD Wentworth. Wentworth helped establish a strong and winning tradition for the Longhorns until he retired in 1926 when Texas hired Clyde Littlefield in 1927. Littlefield continued the success of the Texas Longhorns football program and went 44-18-6 in his coaching career until 1936. Littlefield’s replacement Jack Chevigny didn’t have much success in his head coaching tenure and is the only Texas head coach to ever have a losing record. The next head coach of Texas was Dana X. Bible who led the team to a National Championship in 1941. Bible coached until 1946 and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1951. The next two head coaches for Texas, Blair Cherry and Ed Price, both had short coaching careers with Texas ranging from 1947-1956 combined. Head coach Darrell Royal was the next head coach hire for Texas and it proved to be their best move yet. Royal had coached at Washington and Mississippi State. Royal coached from 1957-1976 and has the most wins by any Texas head coach. Over Royal’s career he lead Texas to 4 National Championships (1963, 1968, 1969, and 1970) and had a 167-47 record. When Royal retired in 1976, he continued to work at the University of Texas as an athletic director until 1980. In 1996, Texas renamed the stadium, Darrell K. Royal Texas Memorial Stadium in honor of their former coach.

Replacing Royal would be difficult for the university, but Texas found a suitable replacement in Fred Akers. Coach Akers took over the program in 1977 and coached until 1986. The Longhorns had success under Akers immediately as they won the National Championship in his first year in 1977. Akers would lead the Longhorns to winning seasons and eventually won his second National Championship in 1981. Akers went to a bowl game every season he was head coach and had a Heisman Trophy winner at the end of his career in 1986, Akers ended his career with a 86-31 record. After the Akers era, Texas saw mediocre years from 1987-1997 when the Longhorns had two different head coaches, David McWilliams and John Mackovic. McWilliams finished his Texas coaching career with a 31-26 record and Mackovic finished with a 41-28 record. Mack Brown was Texas’ next head coaching hire and it proved to be fairly successful when looking back on Brown’s career. Brown coached from 1998-2013 and finished with a 158-48 record and has the 2nd most wins in the school’s history. Brown led the Longhorns to a National Championship in 2005 and had multiple winning seasons in his career. Due to struggles the last few years of his career, Brown announced his retirement in 2013 and Texas hired current coach Charlie Strong. Coach Strong came from Louisville and looks to revive the struggling Longhorns program. Since 2013, Strong has seen his struggles with the program and looks to take them to college football glory heading forward and make Texas an elite program once again.

The University of Texas has seen some of the best players to ever play in college football. The love that football and the Longhorns receive from Texas is a reason that the university has historically drawn in some of the best players. The Longhorns have had 2 Heisman Trophy winners in their history in RB Earl Campbell and RB Ricky Williams. But Texas has also had numerous others who have been some of the best college football players ever in: Bobby Layne, Jamaal Charles, Earl Thomas, Derrick Johnson, Vince Young, Colt McCoy, Major Applewhite, Roy Williams, Casey Hampton, Cedric Benson, Michael Griffin, and numerous others. The Texas Longhorns have truly historic teams and players that are some of the best ever featured in college football.

The Texas Longhorns have had their struggles recently, but look to make a comeback in the next few years and once again become a power in the Big 12 and NCAA. The history behind Texas and the great former players make Texas an attractive destination for players and the university still remains one of the top college football atmospheres in the country. The Longhorns under Strong could be a team to look out for in the near future.

Gameday’s for the Texas Longhorns are almost like a religious event because of how big football is in Texas. The Longhorns are one of the most historic teams in all of college football and have a one of a kind college football atmosphere. Although the team has struggled recently, the Longhorns are still working towards greatness and are once again on the rise. Make sure to make your way down to Darrell K Royal- Texas Memorial Stadium for a Longhorns game that features a sea of burnt orange fans.
