TEXAS TECH RED RAIDERS FOOTBALL OVERVIEW

The Texas Tech Red Raiders are a talented Big 12 football program that’s looking for a big spark in 2016. Last season the Red Raiders finished a modest 7-6 which was not up to the standards or expectations that the team thought they should be. Heading into his 4th year as head coach, Kliff Kingsbury brings a great energy to the team and will look to lead Texas Tech into a winning season and to try and be the best team in the Big 12 which would mean a good bowl game and a shot at the College Football Playoff.

The Texas Tech Red Raiders had their start in 1925 and were Independent from any conference at their start. Because of how popular football is in the state of Texas in general, Texas Tech has always had decent football teams that usually resulted in winning seasons. But the winning seasons didn’t result into national exposure for the team, but more attention came in 1932 when they joined the Border Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Texas Tech won its first conference championship in 1937 under Pete Cawthon. When Dell Morgan took over the program in 1941, Texas Tech started to really develop into a great program as they won 4 Conference Championships from 1941-1950. Texas Tech struggled for a number of years as they transitioned into the Southwest Conference which was very competitive. The university saw many coaches over this time period because of the inconsistency of team performance. Texas Tech couldn’t remain on the national stage for long as they would have a quality season with a lot of wins and then begin to struggle after a season or two.

In 1986, Spike Dykes was hired to be head coach after previously serving as the program’s defensive coordinator. Dykes helped the program improve and was 82-67 over his career that included helping Texas Tech transition from the Southwest Conference into the Big 12 Conference. Texas Tech had 7 bowl game appearances under Dykes with 2 bowl game wins. Dykes was Coach of the Year a total of 4 times in the Southwest and Big 12 Conference. Head coach Mike Leach would take over after Dykes and would begin in 2000 and coach until 2009. Leach would lead Texas Tech to a fair amount of success going 84-43 with 9 bowl game appearances, 5 bowl game wins, and 10 winning seasons. Leach was Big 12 Coach of the Year in 2008. In 2009, Leach was fired due to an investigation on the inappropriate treatment of a player. The next coach of Texas Tech would be Tommy Tuberville who would only coach from 2010-2012 and winning only 20 games out of 37 before resigning to take over the job at Cincinnati. Current head coach Kliff Kingsbury was hired in 2013 and seems to be taking the program in the right direction despite what his record of 19-19 shows. Texas Tech is slowly improving each year and should be a great team in the Big 12 in the new season that could soon be a great team nationally.

The Texas Tech Red Raiders football program has seen a lot of talented players in the past that have been some of the best college football has had to offer and great players in the NFL. Some of the best Texas Tech players are: Zach Thomas, Michael Crabtree, Wes Welker, Graham Harrell, Louis Vasquez, Manny Ramirez, Eric Ward, Danny Amendola, Sammy Walker, and many others. With the direction that the Texas Tech program is heading in, great players will always be coming through the university.

Although the Texas Tech Red Raiders didn’t have the best season in 2015, many believe that they will be very talented and one of the most competitive in the Big 12 when the 2016 season begins. The talented team led by Kliff Kingsbury could be the team to watch out for as they are out to take down the best college football has to offer.
