The Cure Details

The Cure

The Cure, a rock band formed in 1976 in England, is one of the oldest alternative rock bands. They were one of the first of their genre to experience commercial success and break into the mainstream. The group has experienced several lineup changes, with only one constant member, songwriter Robert Smith. The Cure emerged during UK’s punk rock revolution in the 1970s. Their punk image took a drastic change in the 80s when the music became more gothic and dark. Despite an uncertain future during this time, the band has sold an estimated 27 million albums and has released ten EPs and over thirty singles since their formation.

Band members Robert Smith, Michael Dempsey, Lol Tolhurst, met in middle school in 1973 and formed the band Obelisk. After marginal success the boys tried various combinations throughout and after high school before forming Easy Cure in 1977, with Smith as their lead vocalist. That year they won a talent contest and recording contract in Germany. Although they recorded with the label, none of their singles were ever released and the contract dissolved in ‘78. After disputes with other band members, Dempsey, Tolhurst, and Smith formed The Cure and were signed by Polydor Records later that year.

Due to controversy surrounding their first single, “Killing an Arab” and the dislike of the sound of their debut album released in 1979, The Cure got off to a very rough start. The band began a promotional tour later that year, and while filling in for John McKay of the Banshees, Smith discovered the sound he wanted The Cure to have and began working on the group’s second album.

The second album produced the group’s first UK hit single, “A Forest”, reaching number 31. The Cure was praised for covering various genres in such a short time, shifting from punk to gothic in just three years. Their success lead to a world tour in 1980 and the release of their third and fourth albums in 1981 and 1982 respectively. The music of their third and fourth albums became more sombre but also more successful. Their album Faith reached number 14 on the UK charts. The fourth album was so depressing Smith would sometimes leave the stage in tears after a show.

After turmoil between band members in 1983, producers decided to reinvent The Cure’s sound. From 1983-1986 the group released more pop songs and experienced increasing commercial success, with their album The Top reaching the 10th spot on the UK charts, and breaking into the Billboard 200 in the US.

From 1987 to 1998 the band experienced worldwide success, with their album Kiss me, Kiss me, Kiss me reaching Top 10 in multiple countries. In 1989 they had their first number one single on American Modern Rock carts, “Fascination Street”. Throughout the 90’s the band experienced further turmoil, with members leaving and joining, except Smith.

In 2000, as the group approached the end of their contract, Smith believed The Cure would come to an end so released what he believed to be his final album, drawing inspiration from earlier somber albums. The album also lead to a world tour, attended by over one million people worldwide. Fortunately for Smith, the band was resigned in 2004 and has since released two more albums and have performed in multiple music festivals including Coachella.

Although the group has faced many obstacles, they have continued to be successful under the guidance of Robert Smith. This is definitely a must-see show for all rock and alternative rock fans.
