The Lumineers Details

The Lumineers

In 2002, at the young age of 19, Josh Fraites- brother of Jonah Fraites and best friend of Wesley Schultz- died of a drug overdose. Jonah and Wesley came together in a time of tragedy and turned it into something beautiful… music. From 2005 onward, Seth Ulvang, Neyla Pekarak (who found the group’s Craigslist ad), and Bryon Isaacs joined the pair to form folk rock group, The Lumineers.

From their formation in 2002 through 2012, the band struggled to find their sound. They began in small bars and pubs in New York City playing mostly covers but sprinkled in a few originals as well. The pair added and released a few members before finally finding the right combination; Wesley as lead guitarist and vocalist, Jeremiah on drums, Neyla on cello and bass, Seth on piano, and Bryon as lead bassist. However, all members are multi-instrumentalists, Bryon plays twelve different instruments, including glockenspiel, banjo, and mandolin!

In 2011 the group released their first single, titled “Ho Hey”. The single caused national buzz on social media, gaining popularity and attention. In January 2012 Seattle DJ, John Richards, discovered the song and played it on repeat for two weeks before proclaiming it was the best song of the year. After becoming a worldwide phenomenon essentially overnight, the band was offered contracts from several major labels but instead opted for a smaller, independant label. Members explained this decision as wanting a team behind them that was focused on the music and not just the profits, which is hard to find at a large label.

The Lumineers’ first self-titled album was released in April, 2012 and was met with mixed, but mostly positive, reviews. Their single off the album “Ho Hey” debuted at number 90 of the Billboard Hot 100 chart and peaked at the number 3 spot. The single also reached the number 8 spot on UK charts and according to Spotify was the most shared song in Manhattan for that year. The group’s popularity continued to build as they sold out shows in the US and garnered international praise for their unique sound. Tour dates for the UK, Europe, and Australia, sold out so quickly that many shows had to switch venues to accommodate larger crowds.

As 2012 was winding down, the group released Winter as an EP version of their first album. They were also nominated for two Grammy Awards for Best New Artist and Best Americana Album. They also embarked on their international tour and announced the release of a deluxe version of the debut album for August of 2013. In July, the group released their single “Submarines” and performed that song and “Ho Hey” on The Colbert Report. The following month, “Ho Hey” became the 10th song to reach 60 weeks on the Billboard Top 100 charts and would end its reign at 62 weeks.

In 2014 a former band member sued the group claiming they had inadequately compensated him for his contributions to the deluxe album after he left the group. Although Wesley and Jeremiah denied this accusation, the suit is still unsettled and should be later this year. Later that year, The Lumineers were asked to write a song for the Hunger Games: Mockingjay- Part 1 soundtrack and produced “The Hanging Tree” which features vocals from lead actress Jennifer Lawrence. In addition the group announced that they had been working on their third album.

Cleopatra was released on April 8, 2016 and has so far received praise for singles “Ophelia” and “Angela”. The album has a more serious feel than their first album, but has a lot of potential. Songwriters, Wesley and Jeremiah, are extremely talented and this latest album showcases their talent and love for music. Don’t miss out on seeing this show before it’s sold out!
