Toby Keith Details

Toby Keith Bio

Toby Keith is one of country music’s biggest stars. Since his breakout in the 1990s, fans have rushed to get their hands on Toby Keith tickets and have filled huge arenas all over the country to see his energetic stage show. Keith’s records have sold more than 40 million copies worldwide, and his work has earned him more than a dozen important music awards. Keith’s success has even allowed him to break into acting and allowed him to focus on philanthropy.

But Toby Keith’s road to the top of the country music world wasn’t an easy one. Keith toiled in relative obscurity for years, and it took several major-label releases for him to come to the attention of his legions of fans. Keith’s career has included public feuds with other stars and has weathered plenty of criticism. Though it all, Keith’s country values and remarkable talent have helped him be successful.

Toby Keith was a country boy from the start. He was born Toby Keith Covel in Clinton, Oklahoma. Keith was raised in Fort Smith, Arkansas and Moore, Oklahoma, moving first to the former and then to the latter when he was still quite young. Summers with his grandmother were what first got Keith interested in country music: Keith’s grandmother owned an eatery and country music venue called Billie Garner’s Supper Club, and Keith was drawn to the country musicians who came there to play. The country music spoke to Keith, and he was impressed by the apparent lifestyle of the musicians themselves. It didn’t take long for Keith to try his own hand at playing country music: he got his first guitar at the age of eight and was soon playing along with the bands at his grandmother’s establishment.

Keith had a fairly typical country upbringing: when he wasn’t playing country music, he was playing on his high school football team in Oklahoma. A stint with the University of Oklahoma’s football team ended before it started when Keith chose to play semi-pro football instead. He briefly attended Villanova University, but dropped out. He got work as a derrick hand in nearby oil fields. But Keith never forgot his love of music, and he kept playing by himself and with friends.

Oklahoma’s oil industry cratered in 1982, leaving Keith without a job. He played semi-pro football for a time before focusing entirely on music. His band at the time, the Easy Money Band, began playing honky-tonk bars in Oklahoma and Texas to make ends meet. The first fans to buy Toby Keith tickets didn’t know who he was, and while his talent was undeniable, it began to look like Toby Keith’s music would remain obscure.

By the early 1990s, Keith knew that he had to make a change if his musical career was going to take off. He headed to Nashville to get noticed – but failed to do so by the time he turned 30. Keith had promised himself that he’d give up on music if he wasn’t signed by 30. Now that fateful day was here.

But Keith caught a break: a fan of his managed to pass a demo tape onto a Mercury Records executive, who liked what he heard and offered Keith a contract. Keith was over 30 years old, but he had his recording contract. He headed to the studio to record his first single.

Keith’s major-label career was successful from the start. His very first single, “Should’ve Been a Cowboy,” (1993) reached the top of the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. Keith’s debut album, called simply Toby Keith (1993), went gold (and later went platinum). Keith continued his early run of success with Boomtown (1994), Blue Moon (1996), and Dream Walkin’ (1997), as well as a Christmas album called Christmas to Christmas (1995) and a compilation album called Greatest Hits Volume One (1998). All of these studio albums were certified at least gold.

But after succeeding throughout the 1990s, Keith ran into trouble with his label. He and Mercury couldn’t agree with the material that he’d recorded for his next record, and Keith eventually bought the masters and left the label. He headed across town to DreamWorks Records’ Nashville division. With DreamWorks, he released a new single called “When Love Fades” – which promptly flopped.

It was a tough series of events for Keith, but it set the stage for his triumphant crossover breakout. Keith and his label withdrew “When Love Fades” and replaced it with “How Do You Like Me Now?!,” a single that became a massive hit. For five straight weeks, “How Do You Like Me Now?!” stayed atop the country music charts. It also cracked the pop top 40, giving Keith his first significant crossover success. Fueled by the success of its hit single, Keith’s album How Do You Like Me Now?! (1999) went platinum.

Keith’s risky late-90s label change had elevated him from country success to true superstar. More than ever, Toby Keith tickets and Toby Keith albums were hot sellers, and Keith was drawing attention from fans outside of traditional country music markets. Keith’s next album, Pull My Chain (2001) went multi-platinum.

Keith’s 2002 album Unleashed featured his angry post-9/11 ballad “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American),” which became a number one hit. "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American)" also led to a feud with the liberal country group the Dixie Chicks.

Keith continued to produce hit albums regularly for the rest of the 2000s. Shock'n Y'all (2003) was a number-one album on both the country and Billboard 200 charts, and Honkytonk University (2005) made it to numbers one and two on those charts. Honkytonk University also marked the beginning of a very prolific period for Keith: he produced at least one album each year starting with that record and continuing with White Trash with Money (2006), Big Dog Daddy (2007), A Classic Christmas (2007), That Don't Make Me a Bad Guy (2008), American Ride (2009), Bullets in the Gun (2010), Clancy’s Tavern (2011), Hope on the Rocks (2012), and Drinks After Work (2013). Keith’s latest album is 35 MPH Town (2015).

Today, Toby Keith remains one of country music’s most beloved stars. His uncompromising country ethics and his distinctive, catchy country style have earned him an army of fans who rush out to buy up Toby Keith tickets at every stop on his many tours. It’s taken years of work, but Keith has established himself as one of country’s most consistent hitmakers – not to mention one of its biggest personalities. For fans all over the world, country music and Toby Keith are practically synonymous.
