Tool Details

Since their formation in 1990, Tool has become one of the most well-known rock bands in the US. Formed by Danny Carey, Adam Jones, Maynard Keenan, and later adding Justin Chancellor, the group has performed worldwide and has topped charts in several countries.

Tool was formed in 1988 and for two years the group performed locally in the LA area before being approached by record companies, they eventually signed with Zoo Entertainment. Their first album, Opiate was released in 1992 and was best described as “slam and bang” heavy music. The band gained national attention when they released the music video for “Hush” which blatantly showcased their dissenting views of the Parents Music Resource Center and their censorship of music. After this, the group toured with Rollins Band, Fishbone, and Rage Against the Machine gaining a larger following in a short time.

In 1993 alternative rock had reached its peak, and Tool released their first full-length album Undertow. The tour following this release continued as scheduled until Tool played at the Garden Pavilion in Hollywood. The group learned last minute that the venue belonged to the Church of Scientology, a belief system that Tool strongly opposed. Lead singer, Keenan spent almost the entire show baa-ing like a sheep at the audience. Despite that performance, or lackthereof, the group continued to get gigs, including on the Lollapalooza Festival Tour. Following this their album was certified gold and achieved platinum status in 1995.

In late 1996, Tool released their second studio album, Ænima, which was certified triple platinum in 2003. The release was followed by a tour that included shows in America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. This album produced the band’s first Grammy, their single “Ænima” won for Best Metal Performance in 1998. The group released their third album, Lateralus, in 2001 and it quickly became a worldwide success, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart in less than a week. The group received their second Grammy award for Best Metal Performance and after the supporting tour the group took a brief hiatus in 2002.

In 2006 Tool released 10,000 Days and the supporting tour kicked off at the Coachella music festival of that year. The album won Best Recording Package at the Grammy’s, which was the group’s third Grammy thus far. Following their 2012 tour, the group announced another hiatus but promised the release of a new album in the future. The group continued to perform individually and collaborate with other bands and announced a tentative 2014 release date for their next album, unfortunately a lawsuit and family commitments delayed the release.

Although the lawsuit was settled in 2015, the group has yet to announce a release date for their fifth album. They’ve stated that they don’t want to rush their work but hoped it would be finished by the end of 2015. In January of 2016, Tool undertook a US tour and has continued to impress and grow their following. This group’s unique chemistry, strong belief system, and next-level talent, make for an amazing show- even if they are just baa-ing at the audience. This is definitely a tour you don’t want to miss!
