Toronto Raptors Overview

Toronto Raptors Franchise History

If you're looking for a favorite dinosaur-filled NBA franchise, then look no further than the Toronto Raptors. These dinosaurs aren't old at all, with the organization not coming onto the scene until the year 1995 when they would join the Vancouver Grizzlies as the league's newest franchises. The Raptors would do the opposite of setting the world in fire in their first campaign with only 21 wins to show for a season that saw the extremely talented Damon Stoudamire grab the league's honor for best overall rookie.

Things wouldn't get much better all that quickly, as Toronto would only find 16 victories during the 1997-1998 season, but luckily they would capture a winning year and even a cool playoff appearance to go along with it before the turn of the century. Although the Raptors were hit with the brooms by the New York Knicks, their first sniff of the playoffs had to be quite the momentum builder for the franchise going forward.

And in fact, Toronto's results on the court showed that it indeed was full of Raptor-like confidence. The Knicks were the subject of the Raptors' revenge the following year before Allen Iverson's 76ers squad did away with Toronto in a fun-filled Eastern Conference Semifinal round. What allowed the Raptors to achieve such greatness and success? There's no questioning the fact that it all started with the man in the suit on the sidelines. Lenny Wilkens nearly steered the Raptors to the Conference Finals during that impressive year, so he certainly deserves a ton of credit for putting Toronto players in the right position to make things happen.

After the Philly disappointment, Toronto would find itself going bye-bye early the next year thanks to a rugged Detroit Pistons squad. Then a four-year drought would set in for the Raptors in terms of appearing in the playoffs, which wasn't what Toronto fans could have wanted. Sam Mitchell would capture the NBA's top coaching honor in 2007 while guiding Toronto to its first post-season trip in the last five tries, but again, only a first round exit was in the works.

The Raptors have only won four playoff games period since that run, but perhaps back-to-back trips these past two years will give Toronto a much-needed boost in the right direction going forward. Although that whole getting swept by Washington thing after being the higher seed will sting these ferocious creatures a bit.

Toronto Raptors Marquee Players

The Toronto Raptors franchise is the house that Vince built. Vince is obviously referring to Vince Carter, who burst into the pro scene with so much flash and flair that it was impossible to deny his enormous skillset. Some even compared the former North Carolina hoopster to another former North Carolina hoopster: Michael Jordan.

That was certainly a tough comparison for Carter to live up to, but he tried his best by delivering ridiculously insane dunks and performances during his years as a Raptor.

Other supremely fine talents like Chris Bosh and Kyle Lowry have been responsible for bringing success to the Raptors franchise over the years, but there is no doubt who is still the man to beat when it comes to Toronto popularity, and that man is Vince Carter.

Toronto Raptors Conference and NBA Titles

So, here's the thing about the Raptors: They've managed to have winning seasons, but that hasn't translated into NBA Finals glory for the franchise just yet. Actually, Toronto hasn't made it past the semifinal round in the playoffs, so that's still the hump that the Raptors are trying to get over in order to produce championship trophies.

As for divisional crowns, the Raptors scored one back in 2007 before surprisingly being passed up by the Nets in the playoffs.

Toronto has also most recently captured back-to-back Atlantic titles, but in keeping with tradition, that hasn't resulted in any form of NBA playoffs success at all.

Toronto Raptors Venue Information

Who could possibly be responsible for caging the Raptors? Well, that would be the fine staff at the Air Canada Centre. Toronto hasn't always been running the court in that venue, as the franchise made its initial mark on Canada in the SkyDome.

But the Air Canada Centre has been the team's headquarters for 16 years strong, and with their most recent on-court successes, the Raptors have played some superb basketball on their home court. The Toronto Maple Leafs serve as the Raptors partner in crime at the venue, with both teams constantly putting on a show for their faithful fans.

Surprisingly enough, when you factor in the standing room attendance, 20,000 or so people can come view the Raptors during their home games. That makes for a raucous Toronto atmosphere and there's a plethora of exciting features for Raptors fans to experience when they make their way into the impressive venue.

Toronto Raptors 2014-2015 Season Recap

All the Raptors wanted to do was be better than the year better. With Toronto winning the divisional trophy the season before, that had to mean that good things were once again on the way for this lovable Canadian basketball franchise.

The Raptors did do better than the previous season by scoring one more win than its previous campaign total, so improvement was had for sure by this basketball team. They even chalked up a second Atlantic crown in a row. Clearly, this seemed to be a squad on the upswing in the NBA.

But when it comes to recent playoff success, the Raptors haven't had any. This appeared to be their best chance to erase the past Toronto disappointments, however, that was not to be.

Instead, all the glory of the first round of the playoffs would go to the Washington Wizards in a series that wasn't even close. We're talking bring out the brooms in Toronto, as the Wiz squad swept the Raptors right out of post-season existence.

While the regular season triumphs continue to be excellent for the Raptors, it's going to need to equate to NBA playoffs success down the road.
