Caps Craze: A Brief History of the Washington Capitals

The Washington Capitals, founded in 1974, have been a cornerstone in the Washington, D.C. sports scene ever since. The Capitals, routinely shortened to the ‘Caps’, are currently part of the National Hockey League’s Eastern Conference and Metropolitan Division.

While the team has not been immensely successful during their 40-plus year tenure in the NHL, they do own one conference championship which came back in 1998. The Caps also have eight division crowns and routinely find themselves battling it out in the playoffs.

The Capitals earned the Presidents’ Trophy following the 2009-10 year, given to the NHL team with the best record following the conclusion of the regular season. Unfortunately, Washington was unable to carry this superb play into the playoffs that year as they were upset in the first round by the Montreal Canadiens.

Despite the disappointing end to the season, it’s hard to be upset when understanding where the Caps have come from. In their inaugural season, Washington managed just 21 points after an 8-67-5 record, by far the worst among similar teams. The .131 winning percentage that season still remains the worst season recorded in the NHL.

Things remained ugly for awhile, with the Caps piling up losing records like it was their job. In 1975-76, Washington managed just 11 wins and put together a winless streak of 25-straight games. The team remained volatile until an amazing trade was completed in 1982, perhaps turning the dismal franchise around and potentially keeping it in Washington, D.C.

Newly hired general manager David Poile sent Rick Green and Ryan Walter to the Candiens for Rod Langway, Doug Jarvis, Craig Laughlin, and Brian Engblom. The addition of Scott Stevens via the NHL Draft, paired with the blockbuster trade, helped the Caps to make their first playoff appearance in franchise history that year. Washington was eliminated by the New York Islanders early on, but it’s safe to say this season helped to finally create a hockey buzz in the nation’s capital.

The Capitals built on the success created during the 1983 season, going on to make the postseason a remarkable 14 years in a row.

After serving as the home arena of the Capitals from 1974-1997, the Capital Centre located in Landover, Maryland, was finally given a break from ice hockey. The Caps moved into the brand new MCI Center, in the heart of downtown Washington, D.C. The arena, now known as the Verizon Center, also hosts the Washington Wizards of the NBA, as well as many concerts and other events. For Capital games, the arena holds18,277 fans which ranks middle of the pack among other NHL arenas.

It didn’t take long for the Capitals to get comfortable in their new home, winning the Eastern Conference the first year in the building. The Caps topped the Boston Bruins, Ottawa Senators, and Buffalo Sabres en route to their first Stanley Cup Finals appearance. The team was then swept promptly by the talented Detroit Red Wings, although hockey has taken another step forward in Washington, D.C.

A pair of division titles would come in the years following their Stanley Cup appearance, as would expectations when the team decided to make some big offseason moves. The Caps acquired veterans Jaromir Jagr and Robert Lang in back-to-back years, but for whatever reason the team didn’t mesh. They eventually dumped may of their stars and limped to a paltry finish in 2004.

They seemed to pick a good year to be bad, sneaking passed the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft to earn the number one overall pick. The Caps surely didn’t miss with this one, selecting a young man by the name of Alexander Ovechkin to help lead their franchise moving forward.

After compiling some great complementary pieces, such as Alexander Semin and Nicklas Backstrom, around the superstar Ovechkin, the Capitals won the division three consecutive years in 2007-08, 2008-09, and 2009-10. Head coach Bruce Boudreau led the team during this stretch, however was fired following a rough patch in the beginning of the 2011-12 season. Former Capital player Bruce Hunter took over the head coaching duties, energizing the team to a strong finish and seventh seed in the playoffs. The Caps would advance one round before being knocked off by the New York Rangers in a seven game series.

Washington would miss the Eastern Conference playoffs for just the first time in seven seasons in 2014, earning just 90 points. With many familiar faces like Ovechkin and Backstrom, the Caps were able to rebound during the 2014-15 season and reclaim their stake among the top teams in the NHL. Their 45-26-11 record overall earned them a two-seed in the newly formatted playoffs after finishing second in the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference.

To no surprise, Ovechkin finished among the league leaders in a number of categories including points, where he finished fourth with 81. His 53 goals were tops among all scorers and 10 more than second place finisher Steven Stamkos. Nicklas Backstrom piled on 78 points of his own, primarily via the assist as he compiled 60 to lead the league.

Fellow Capital cornerstone, goalie Brandon Holtby, also finished among the league leaders at his position with a 2.22 goals against average.

Although Ovechkin and the rest of his talented cast aren’t getting any younger, they still surely have a few more years to try and bring home Washington’s first Stanley Cup trophy.
