Ween Details

Aaron Freeman and Mickey Melchiondo, better known as Gene Ween and Dean Ween, formed the group, Ween, in 1984. This alternative rock group met in a middle school typing class and formed a band after discovering their mutual love for music. Since then, the pair has pleased crowds with their unique sound and, after a brief hiatus, they’ve reunited for a reunion tour.

From their formation in 1984 through 1989, the group produced six cassette and played shows locally, making their debut at the high school talent show. In 1989, Ween was opening for Skunk when they were discovered by the record label, Twin/Tone. They were signed and their debut album, GodWeenSatan: The Oneness, was released. An overseas tour, with a series of dates in the Netherlands, began in December of 1990. Ween’s second album was released in late 1991 and the group’s use of pitch-shifted guitars and vocals paired with drug-laced humor established their signature sound. Their second album was followed by their first US tour followed by a week long UK tour.

Later that year, the group signed with Elektra Records and released their major label debut in 1992. This album featured their highest charting single, “Push th’ Little Daisies” and was also a hit in Australia. Chocolate and Cheese was released in 1994 and the group performed on Late Night with Conan O’Brien in early 1995. Ween released three additional albums from 1994 through 1999, the third being MP3-only as the band desired to pursue alternate forms of media.

After the release of their sixth studio album in 2000, Ween started the Internet radio station WeenRadio, which was recognized by Rolling Stone as the third best Internet music site that year. In November, 2000 Ween’s song “Loop de Loop” was featured in a Spongebob episode and the show’s creator later contacted Ween telling them that their music was a huge inspiration to the show.

Ween signed to a new label and released Quebec, their first studio album in five years, in 2003. This album was followed by a CD and DVD set that compiled shows from their tour. In 2006 Ween rented out an old farmhouse and converted it into a working studio where they wrote and recorded over 50 songs before deciding which belonged on their next album. La Cucaracha was released by Rounder Records in 2007 and was their final album.

In 2011 Ween embarked on a West Coast tour, their first show taking place in British Columbia. Freeman was off the whole show, playing the tambourine off-beat and singing off-key or incorrect lyrics, he appeared heavily intoxicated. At one point during the show he laid down on the stage while the group performed an instrumental of one of their songs. Following that the other members walked off the stage, leaving Freeman to sing by himself, again off-key and this time without instrumentals.

Following this Freeman announced to Rolling Stone that he was retiring due to substance abuse problems. After this, the group quietly broke up until a surprise announcement in November 2015 stating they would reunite on a two concert reunion tour in February of 2016. Because tickets went so quickly, they have added more shows, playing through August of 2016, including performances at the Bonnaroo and Okeechobee festivals.
